D&C's Maiorana Projects The Final 53

Recommended Posts

Here's what the Bills' 53-man roster could look like in Week 1 against the Jets

Sal Maiorana, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle Published 3:31 a.m. ET May 9, 2019

ORCHARD PARK – Last summer when the Buffalo Bills pulled into training camp at St. John Fisher College, all eyes were on the quarterback competition, specifically how rookie first-round draft pick Josh Allen was performing.

When the Bills return in late July for their 20th visit to Pittsford, eyes will be spread all around the practice fields because with all the off-season additions to the roster, there will be several competitions unfolding, a few of which could be fascinating.

Between now and then there will be a rookie mini-camp, organized team activities, and a mandatory mini-camp that will help coach Sean McDermott and his staff get to know all of these new players, reconnect with returning players, and develop a plan leading into the Fisher sessions, which will be critical when it comes time to picking the 53-man roster.

I really think that if we have to pay for reading then they should have to pay for advertising here.

Same here, not paying for that.  Oh...and our opinions here have as much merit and probability of being right as his.  Too many variables to start this stuff now.

Exactly. His guess is as good as any of ours. It's like paying to see someone's mock draft.

People just need to stop posting links to sites that need subscriptions. If you pay for a subscription aren't you checking it daily or weekly anyway? Why post it here

Why yes he was......

Overall the list is reasonable.  OL is the largest question.  He has Ford at RT which makes sense but my guess is they start him at G.

I think its a good place to start. I'd prefer Derek Anderson not to make the team and another WR who shows promise. 4 TEs seem like a lot too....would have to see a lot out of Croom/Fisher for them to both make it.

Call me crazy, but I think we will carry 5 TEs this year,  and cut DiMarco

Kroft

Knox

Sweeney

Croom (could play wide at times)

Fisher (if he has realiable hands, he could be very useful)

all make the team.

I think it gives Daboll more options on offense this way.

I count about 43 locks to make it, from Sal's list the ones that are not locks:

FB - Dimarco

WR - Duke Williams

TE - Fisher

G - Teller

DL - Yarborough

LB - Alexander (though he's close because of ST)

LB - Harold

DB - J. Johnson

DB - Neal

P - Bojorquez

I think either Fisher or Dimarco make it not both and J. Johnson and Neal could both make it but at least one will. If Carter's ACL is healed the punting competition could be pretty good.

I think they keep 6 WRs

If either Dimarco or Fisher do not make it I think they keep 9 OL and use 1 as the extra blocking TE (Waddle?) - that would give them 5 interior and 4 OTs

I do think they keep Neal and J. Johnson

No.....I pay for the subscription because it costs 33 CENTS a month.  Then I come here and find all of my info.  If some of that info leads me there, I can still read it.

They obviously need the money to stay afloat.  If you’ve never read their articles in the past, then I wouldn’t pay for it.  I’ve always read their articles, so paying 33 CENTS a month to support a local paper makes a lot of CENTS.  33 CENTS a month to be exact.

I thought I heard / read the Bills wanted him at RT,

One D&C story excerpt -

Ford began his career playing mostly as a reserve at left guard with a few starts, but his redshirt junior year was spent at right tackle and he earned All-American honors

It's actually 33 cents per month for the first three months, followed by $8.00 per month afterwards. And when you sign up, you have to give them a credit card number and click a box that authorizes them to automatically charge your credit card very month.

but who knows

https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2019/4/17/18309044/nfl-draft-2019-cody-ford-buffalo-bills-oklahoma-scouting-report-offensive-tackle-ranking

He is a “just enough” guy — and that’s not a bad thing.

In this day and age, you can’t stick a right tackle out there to protect your $20 million-per-year quarterback if he can’t pass block. The offenses are too wide open, and, as I mentioned before, the dudes rushing off the left edge are too good. Going by that criteria, Ford is probably more ready to start right now than Taylor, even though Taylor showed more flashes of dominance.

Really? OL is definitely the position I have the weakest understanding and perspective of , what makes you think he fits better as a G?

It's a decent first draft of the roster. Mine only differs in 5 ways:

1. No need for Anderson as the third QB. Add Stanford as a backup MLB.

2. No need for 4 TE's. Cut Fisher and add Waddle as a ninth OL.

3. Replace Yeldon with Perry.

4. Replace Croom with Sweeney.

5. Replace Yarbrough with Darryl Johnson.

Thanks for posting. Really not much info there - so not worth paying to read:)

Just for comparison here is my prediction from 10 days ago (new guys are in bold)

QB (3): Allen, Barkley, Jackson or Anderson

RB (5? McCoy, Gore, Yeldon, Singletary, Murphy

WR (7): Brown, Foster, Jones, Beasley, D. Williams, McKenzie, Roberts

TE (3): Kroft, Knox, Croom

OL (9): Morse, Ford, Dawkins, Nsekhe, Long, Spain, Teller, Feliciano, Waddle

DE (4): Murphy, Lawson, Hughes, Yarbrough or D. Johnson

DL (4): Phillips, Phillips, Oliver, Lotuleilei

LB (6): Edmunds, Milano, Stanford, Joseph, Lorax, Lacey

CB (5): T. White, K. Johnson, T. Johnson, L. Wallace, EJ Gaines

S (4): Hyde, Poyer, Neal, Bush

ST (3): Bojorquez (P), Haushka (K), Ferguson (LS)

I have Murphy - he has DiMarco (Murphy can contribute on ST can DiMarco do that?)

I have an extra WR (McKenzie), he has an extra TE (Fisher) - Again McKenzie contributes on ST - Can Fisher do that? That said I do like the Fisher signing (which happened after my mock 53). But Fisher has to beat out Croom (Pegs' daughter's BF) to make it if he cant contribute on ST or there has to be an injury.

I have an extra lineman (Waddle) and he has an extra DB (Neal). I was in two minds about that and I agree a case can be made to keep Neal over the 9th lineman.

Bottomline - I do not think the fortunes of the team will be significantly altered if we had DiMarco, Fisher  and Neal over Murphy, MacKenzie and Waddle. Our guess for these 3 spots is as good as these media guys.

Please - this is not a diss on Sal Maiorana - who I have enjoyed reading for nearly 3 decades and who is very underappreciated relative to TBN writers. But he would be the first to tell you that 49-50 of the spots are already set in the 53 this year - so there is no major bombshell. There will be no major TC battle in the offing for a spot on the roster. Now starter battles, on the other hand, is a different animal this year. While the Defense appears to be set (except for the 2nd CB spot), the WR, TE and OL starter spots are there for the taking.

I got Sports Illustrated about 5 years longer than I wanted it. It just kept renewing until that credit card got replaced. Now? They send us TWO copies that we never pay for. One to my wife (who could not possibly care less) and another to a person who is no longer alive. Anything to get that circulation up!

A short (a couple or three sentences or intro paragraph) excerpt no. If it is more than this you are in the grey.  A definite no-no is to cut and paste the entire article.  Paid or unpaid subscription is not of concern.

Funny how that works.  I still get SI too, haven’t paid for it in 10+ years.

I expect Beane to be active in signing 2-3 cap casualties and one-year "prove it" FAs to round out the roster.   So the 53 is still fluid in my mind...

Guys on the bubble would be DiMarco, Fisher, Yarbrough, Harold.
