"Bridge" QBs are Worthless

Can we please stop with the illogical "we should trade for: x,y, z player cause they are mediocre and cheaper than Tyrod" foolishness. Bridge players are worthless, they are just good enough to get you 5-7 wins and keep you out of a top 5 pick and nowhere near good enough to get this team to a championship. If you don't believe TT can be "the guy", draft someone else to be "the guy" this year or next and play the rookie if we take one or Cardale this year if we wait til next year to draft one, he will either sink or swim and we will know what we have. I'm tired of all these half measures.

Yep, cut TT. Romo is the guy. Draft a QB as backup.

I think Tyrod is a bridge Quarterback.

The job of a bridge QB is simply to hold the fort down so you don't have to throw an unprepared rookie QB into the fray before he's ready. He's just there so a team doesn't ruin their highly drafted potential FQB.

And, in the event of that future QB taking the reigns, you have an experienced backup and (hopefully) a veteran presence to act as another coach.

Hence why I kinda like the quotes today attributed to Josh McCown about going to a team with a young QB.

The point being that we either use Tyrod for that purpose or just start Cardale, whom evidently everyone thinks needs to sit on the bench for 15 years before he's "ready" to play. There is no logic behind trading for Foles or some other mid-level guy to come in and be a caretaker. We have a QB who has been on an NFL roster for a year; if you don't believe in TT then start Cardale and get ready to draft a rd 1 QB this year or next.

Yep. Maybe if the Texans had a bridge "QB", they don't ruin Carr

There are no such thing as "bridge QBs." It's just a term invented by bored fans.

Just like every other position, you play the best QB you can acquire.

If TT is the best QB we can find, you don't dump him because you've labeled him a "bridge QB." That's illogical. You play TT until you find someone better.

But I agree with the rest of this. Our goal is the Super Bowl. And that requires a Super Bowl caliber roster. We have several players who don't play like they belong on a Super Bowl team and DW needs to find their replacements.

No, you either have it or you don't.

This is actually a myth.

I'm sure you'll be totally patient and reasonable as we rack up a stack of 3-13 and 4-12 seasons as we churn through QBs looking for the "the guy".

Was Fergy a bridge QB? He wasn't a championship type QB, so I guess he fits the definition. He did bridge us from Dennis Shaw to Vince Ferragamo. It was a 12 year bridge.

Was OJ a bridge RB? He never brought us a championship either.

Call them whatever you want, you put the best players on the field you can. Sadly, they all won't be superstars and they all won't earn championship rings.

I don't think that the new coach was brought in to tank for the 3rd best QB in the 2018 draft. I think he was likely brought in to bring some accountability and discipline to a team that lacked it, as well as win some football games. As that is most likely his goal - he's going to start the best player they can get at EVERY position including QB.

If the new staff believes that Tyrod is the best QB they can get, he will be the guy for the next 2 years. If we draft someone next year and want to start him - we can trade Tyrod. The cap hit will be tough, but at least you get something back for the money spent. In year 3, his trade value is actually really high, as his base salaries are low for 3 years.

That's not typically how it works. Far more often then not, highly drafted potential franchise QBs do get thrown into the fray right away. Not many have the luxury of hanging out on the bench for a few years. That's not what they are highly drafted for.

Yes cause your way has been working so well for 17 years. Do you have a string of "7-9 but at least we're not 3-13" pennants up in your living room? Do we get a special "not as bad as the other guys" trophy? Everyone rips on the Browns, but they are racking up draft picks and actually putting themselves in a position to find their QB of the future. The sad thing is we're not even "close" to a championship in any way, we are "close" to qualifying for a wildcard loss. You need a clutch QB to win in this league now, they do not need to be prolific and pass for a million yards a season, but they need to have that spark that can consistently move a team down the field when down in the fourth quarter of a winnable game, we don't have that and I don't see it readily available in free agency. So either stick with TT and draft someone soon, or play the young guys and see if they can do better. You bring in an old guy it better be as a backup cause nick Foles isn't winning a Super Bowl.

If the Bills keep pay Tyrod 30 million + I predict the Browns will soon leave us in the dust.

They've been "in position" for over a decade.

Drafting in the middle of the pack is not the reason why we don't have an answer at QB. Just like drafting in the top 5 doesn't guarantee you anything.

Doug Whaley the Bills GM disagrees with you. He blames the mediocre finishes for the Bills being in QB purgatory.

Per your last sentence, the sadder fact is that the vast, VAST majority of players will never be superstars and never earn a ring. Heck, the majority of superstars don't get rings, let alone the fair to middling players.

Who said guarantee? You have a better shot at a franchise QB who is widely regarded as a top 5 pick. I doubt I am telling you something new here, unless you believe you have the skill to identify franchise QBs at any stage in the draft. If you did, I suppose you may be actually making those picks rather than posting on a message board though.

Tyrod's peers are the likes of Glennon, Kaepernick, Foles. No reason to commit to this big long term deal for a dude that's basically replacement-level.

During the season we all came to realize he's not worth it- after the Raider game we all said he's got to go and nobody stepped up to defend him. Our common sense told us he lacks the basic skills to be a good starting quarterback.

Now that the season is over we're forgetting what we learned, and in the name of "optimism" falling for statistics that do not show how he can't see the field and refuses to throw the ball.

The thing is, his being a crap quarterback (in relative terms) makes me plenty optimistic because crap is easy to replace, and it even can be improved on.

Bring back a strong running game, and it can fall some from last year and STILL be one of the best in the NFL, but now go from one of the worst passing teams to middle of the pack and your offense is better and more versatile.

This is the best thread post I've read here in a long time. There are two doors to go through...door one is go with 8-8 forever with guys like Fitz and Taylor, rinse and repeat...or door two, which is go with the combo of Jones and the QB who will no doubt be drafted high in either 2017 or 2018 (if Jones doesn't have it).

I don't understand why door two wouldn't be the consensus for Bills fans at this point. Being average is pointless. Jones is ready enough and the fallback option of the 2018 QB draft class is only a year away.

Exactly. There's no point in maintaining average for fear of being terrible. The goal is to win the SB.

Ready enough for what?

Ready enough to win us about the same amount of games we would have won with Tyrod taking into consideration what we've seen from both of them to this point - about 2 games. We probably go 5-11 or 6-10 instead of 7-9 or 8-8 but we haven't invested a huge cap hit on someone the FO doesn't seem to believe is "the guy". That said, if they think TT can grow into that, then pay him. I just don't like all the talk about bringing in a bunch of has-beens when we already know what kind of QBs they are. As a FO either you believe TT is the guy or you bounce him to save money and just get young guys in here.
