Alaska Darin
Â That's a heartening fact. What are we? Year 5 at this point? Not really. To put it in "like" terms: This season's Sabres (as disappointing as it's been) already have more points than ANY Edmonton team for the last SEVEN seasons. They were under 67 points FIVE times during that period. Â Our rebuild didn't really start in earnest until the off season when Darcy was fired. That happened in late 2013 and that season ended in 2014. The following draft got us Reinhardt, who wasn't ready for the NHL and then the tank happened. So really we're in season 3. I think it's probably comparable to how the Blues were built. Â So in reality this was really the first season with the possibility of contention but there were simply too many injuries for this group to overcome. Hopefully this off season nets us a couple of NHL quality defensemen, with at least one of them being a Top 3 type guy.

I saw the score and then deleted. What's the point?  A lot of teams who are vying for the playoffs and won't make it are as good or better than us. Unless a lot is done in the offseason we can be watching the same scenario play out again.  I'm a long time Buffalo Bills fan. The Bills have not had a legitimate franchise qb since the retirement of Jim Kelly, over twenty years, ago. How does that happen? What's the point?  I'm not the type of sports fan whose emotions and attitude are roiled by a sports outcome. But there is a depressing absurdity and futility to being a Buffalo pro sports fan. Systemic and institutional failure that lasts for more than a generation is so stupid.

They've been in rebuild practically since the 2006 lockout. This will be only the second time they've made the playoffs during that time. There's been a couple different resets during that time, but they've definitely been acquiring this current group of players for several years now. The main difference between their tank and Buffalo's is that it came at the end of their retooling. Ours was the start.
JohnC
Â Let's not pretend that Toronto's approach was a one year plan. They've been in rebuild practically since the 2006 lockout. There's been a couple different resets during that time, but they've definitely been acquiring this current group of players for several years now. The main difference between their tank and Buffalo's is that it came at the end of their retooling. Ours was the start. It was a universal belief by the hockey experts that the Sabres were entering this season ahead of Toronto in the rebuilding process. What went wrong? Our GM miscalculated how poorly staffed his defensive corps was. It went from being not only a weak spot to an exploitable liability that couldn't be masked. It's not unfair to say that it dragged down the team in general. Â I agree with you that the Toronto rebuilding process has been in place for a few years. And so has ours. In fact, most hockey experts believed that we were one to two years ahead of them. The glaring hole on defense sucked the juice out of the rest of the lineup to the point that it wasn't good enough to overcome the weakness on the blue line. Â Toronto had a number of recognized young talent that most people thought were a year or two away. It was that young talent that mushroomed together and played at a high level faster than most thought. Give them credit for the year that they have had (playoffs or not). They are the surprise team while the Sabres are the disappointing team, at least for me.

There's been a couple different resets during that time, but they've definitely been acquiring this current group of players for several years now. The main difference between their tank and Buffalo's is that it came at the end of their retooling. Ours was the start. Agreed. I've been saying this for a while now. People like to say that this is only Toronto's 2nd (or 3rd) year rebuilding, and I just don't see it that way at all. Â Look at all the players they have from previous rebuilds - Rielly, Kadri, Bozak, Gardiner, JVR, Connor Brown. Those are all guys that are big contributors to the Leafs current success, and all of them have been with the Leafs longer than a couple/few years. Kadri was drafted in 2009... The Leafs just didn't tear it down the same way the Sabres did. Sabres went scorched earth, total rebuild. The Leafs current rebuild is more of a re-tool of previous rebuilds. They kept a lot of talent from previous teams. Buffalo didn't do that. Â The other MAJOR difference is coaching (and probably management IMO). Babcock blows Bylsma out of the water. It's not even close IMO. And Shanahan is proving to be a top, top end NHL exec. I am very impressed with him. He's done a fantastic job in Toronto. The book is still, out on Tim Murray, but I think he may have screwed up by trying to speed hints up so much and trading away so many assets. Thinking about what could have been from just that 2015 draft alone really bugs me some days. Â Toronto definitely went flying by us in their rebuild. But I also think maybe people thought Toronto was going to continue tearing down the team this year. I kept reading how JVR, Bozak and more would be traded away. But they kept them instead and they've been contributing more than anyone thought. Their rookies have been very surprising as well. Auston Matthews is about to hit 40 goals! Who would have ever thought that?! Man that's nuts! Marner and Nylander have also been fantastic. Nobody thought they'd come in and contribute so much. Â I get it. It's hard not to be jealous of Toronto. I know I am at times. They still have some nice talent in the pipeline too, and their rookies look miles ahead of some of ours. But I am willing to be patient with the Sabres. Our rebuild was just different than theirs, and their coaching is far superior. Â I do like what Toronto is doing though. They are drafting for speed and skill. Talent is their #1 priority. Buffalo is drafting for size and toughness, along with speed and skill. I feel like Tim Murray is building a team more in the Western conference mold and Toronto is building a team that seems to fit the direction the East is currently going (but NHL trends are constantly changing). We will see which works out better. Ultimately, you have to beat a western conference team to win a Cup. But you have to go through multiple eastern conference teams to get there... They pulled the plug on the NHL.com message board for the team that very minute. Â Also helps to bring in greats for execs and coaching staff, and timed it right for a very very good #1 pick in Matthews. Â It's a bit early to have swagger for this team, but it's coming together nicely and very watchable. Lou and Babcock know what to do over the offseason to further the situation well. Â Â And the Sabres are stuck with a douche bag who is 1 part caustic and 1 part clueless. Clearly Bylsma has been far from perfect but I think it is hard to totally judge him given the miscalculated roster that Murray put together. Â Thinking you are smarter than everyone, talking down to people and being generally belligerent is actually a management style that can work if you are actually smarter than everyone. When you're an idiot it flames out fast. This year's Sabres were evidence of that and Murray still thinks he is the smartest guy in the room. It probably took Babcock 4 seconds to realize that when he considered the job. Â The Sabres aren't winning jack until Murray is gone gone gone. He sucks. Yeah I didn't really understand what Ristolainen was so upset about. I watched the replay a bunch of times and all I seen was Kadri getting pushed into the goalie and then cross checked/slashed repeatedly by 2 separate Buffalo Sabres, but I didn't see Kadri actually do anything. If the players have respect for Murray it is youthful naïveté. I'm not defending Bylsma but I'm not going to slam him for being unable to make lemonade from the stream of lemons Murray dished out.
