Osweiler or Tyrod: Who Would You Sign Long-Term?

Recommended Posts

This is not a rip Tyrod thread. Nor is it a "Brock is the next Flacco" thread. I'm not professional scout (and if anyone here is, please let me know since I'd love to hear your opinion), but I've watched Tyrod's 13 NFL starts and Brock's 6 NFL starts. I like what Tyrod's shown, but I'm with Whaley on this one -- it's too soon to commit big money/years to him. Fortunately there's another year to decide. But there isn't with Osweiler. He's a free agent after this season, and the Broncos don't know what to do. (Thinking here in Colorado is that they'll franchise Vonn Miller and see what they can do after that.)

So my question is this: would you go after Brock in the offseason, maybe signing him to a long-term Kaep-type deal? Or would you stick with Tyrod, maybe bringing in a 3rd round pick as insurance? My opinion: I like what I've seen from Osweiler more than what I've seen from Tyrod. Yes, part of it is the half foot of height (a big part). Osweiler has the arm and can make all the throws to all parts of the field. I understand Tyrod has a higher QB rating. I don't really care about that (I do think it's a useful stat, but it has it's limitations.). I see Tyrod as an exciting QB who does several important things really well: avoiding bad decisions, making the long throws to the outside, using his legs to make things happen. But I see more upside with Brock. He really has had an impressive debut, and it's telling that an apparently healthy Peyton is nowhere near seeing the field again in a Broncos uniform.

So objectively ... which would you prefer to hitch the Bills wagon too for the next 4 or 5 years?

Given what Osweiler has shown in 6 starts, I think there is no way in hell Denver lets him sniff FA. Von Miller is a great player but what are their options at QB if they let Osweiler walk? They won't franchise any player if they can help it, but I think Osweiler is smart enough to stay with a system where he's having success and perhaps accept an incentive-laden contract that will pay him well as a baseline and pay him like a top-10 QB if he proves that he is one.

I think Manning is done. Elway spoke with his heart in bringing him back for one more try, but he's enough of a manager now to know that he gave him his one more shot and it didn't work out.

So this is a purely theoretical discussion, and if we're having a theoretical discussion about which QB we can't have is preferred, I'll have a double helping of Aaron Rodgers please.

Tyrod.

I like Osweiler. I think he is good. But Tyrod has the ability to make big plays with his arm and legs. He doesn't take sacks, he doesn't turn the ball over. Whats not to like? I think he is extremely close to being Russel Wilson

Against oakland this year when Brock was sacked 5 times, I'm willing to be Tyrod wins that game because he can escape those sacks more often than not

I actually think that it is a pretty good thread and a reasonable question. For me it is Tyrod. I just think that he can do more. Osweiler has much better weapons (Watkins aside) and just didn't do as much. I like him some but if you plugged Tyrod into that exact same situation in Denver, with that defense and those WR, he would have been better IMO.

The best comparison for Tyrod to me is Alex Smith. They both can run, minimize turnovers and play in run first offenses. Tyrod makes more plays but Smith is a better clock/game manager. They are middle of the league guys that you can win with.

I would like to see Tyrod run the two minute drill efficiently and effectively and show the ability to consistently throw with success over the middle. I have watched Brock a bit, and he seems to be able to do these two things now. Since Tyrod has amazing athletic ability, if he can improve in these two areas in the near term, he would be the choice.

Tyrod Taylor. I remain to be convinced by Brock. He has had spells of games where he has looked good and spells where he has looked terrible. He also came into a team that was already on the fringe of the play-offs. Let's see him do it for a team that is 0-0 when they need to win games rather than just avoid mistakes let the D play well and hope a few wins fall their way. The Broncos will extend him but right now I prefer what I have seen from Tyrod.

I also think he'll be re-signed with Denver. If he were to hit FA, to me that sets off a red flag. If the team that sees him every day is willing to let him go, then maybe he's not as magical as he's made out to be. You could also make the argument that if the Bill's were to go after Osweiler, it may be fore the same reason, that they see too many flaws in TT that are not fixable. There may be flaws that once teams see more of Osweiler he'll regress. TT also has played more games so more to look at on him, both good and bad. The question for both of them is can they take the next step. For that reason I'd more likely stick with TT in that he know the offense. Improvements to the O-line and the defense overall, and he could likely pull a few more wins out by next season.

Overall there are many things wrong with the Bills that need fixing more than changes and spending money at QB

He's not going anywhere IMO. Broncos have groomed him now for years and have a lot invested in his development.

I'm going to cheat and say I'd like to have them both and see them compete for the starting job, but of course that makes no sense for lots of reasons. Just saying i like them both.

If I had to chose based on what I've seen to date I would opt for Osweiler. He's been impressive and his game is better suited to the NFL. He is the prototypical pocket passer.

I like what Tyrod has been able to do but there is greater risk there - risk of injury and that he may ultimately be limited by the holes in his game (unless you blame it all on Roman, which I would hesitate to do).

Neither yet. IMO, you delay it as long as possible. Use the franchise tag if you have too. I don't see either of these guys as top 10 guys, much less top 5. You don't want to be in a Tannehill situation.

That said, I'm biased towards the bigger pocket passer. I liked BO in his draft. There's too much risk with the mobile, smaller guys. Russell Wilson is the outliner not the rule.

BO climbs the pocket and has made some very impressive throws over the middle. At times he has looked fantastic.

He also has looked quite bad at times, and I've watched him crumble under pressure. I think BO has a better chance to make it as a reliable starter in the league, but Tyrod's famous "ceiling" is probably higher.

I would not want to pay either of them huge money at this point. If I'm Denver, I offer a 3-4yr bridge deal before spending huge dollars on him. If he hits free agency and someone else wants to gamble and pay him huge money so be it.

As for the Bills choice, I would 100% stick to Taylor rather than overpaying BO to try to steal him from Denver. Taylor has had a fine season and should continue to progress. I would not be looking to sign him to a huge deal just yet either.

Not a whole lot of difference between these guys from a developmental standpoint. They're kind of at the same level, but I think Tyrod shows more command and urgency on the field.

I wouldn't feel comfortable giving either a long term deal right now, but I'd choose Tyrod because of his personality and running ability.
