Bills' Cuts to the 53 Man Roster Limit

Recommended Posts

It's probably a good idea to keep him on PS for a few weeks just in case EJ goes down. When Orton has been on the team a month they could sign a different QB to groom. I don't think they will but they should. I think Tuel stinks but it's probably prudent to keep him a few weeks.

Agreed. Ej goes down week 1 orton would be backed up by another guy off the street? Odds are tuel has some sort of role here short term.

With the move though, I wonder if the orton agreement might've been a handshake deal atleast a few days earlier and perhaps some discussion and prepping him for week 1 started before today.

It looks like we've almost trimmed away all of our known dead wood, except for Urbik, Pears (for the money he's making) and Brooks. The Bills have finally purged almost all of the guys to whom this staff has been inexplicably loyal, i.e., Moorman, Graham, Legursky, Tuel, and they at least tried to move on from Pears. If it wasn't for the loss of Kiko and the uncertainty surrounding EJ, IMO we would have a damn fine roster from 1-53. That's a pretty nice two offseason turnaround in my book.

Anyone remember the name of the ex-Bill who surprisingly made the 53-man roster last year, had a huge party, had numerous news stories about his "fight to the top" -- and then got cut the very next day? It was kind of sad because he was so excited in post 4 p.m. interviews, giving all the glory to God and his work ethic, etc.

I clearly remember the story over the guy. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys Matthew Coller, this morning, mentions a trade that Whaley made. He say it makes Whaley look pretty good?

What is the trade? Coller and Cich actually never mention it and I couldn't find it here.

The mention is at ~19 minute mark

They circled by to the deal when Joe B came on the show.

Maybe take a break from the computer for awhile.

Now tell the trouff. Did you lose a bet with JB, or did you willingly take on that avatar. :nana:

And while I'm at it with personal notes... it's nice to see Kelly the Dog FKA: KTFABD posting here a lot more recently. I think that also brought back The Dean. Positive stuff for the board IMHO. Now if we could work on getting Lori and Cablebabe back. Though I did see Cindy posting in the last day or so. So, ya never know.

Sheppard for Hughes. Hughes had a great season with double digit sacks and Shep just got cut.

I've been watching the interior OL (Urbik/Legursky), TE (Gragg/Smith) and developmental QBs(Tuel) that have been cut.

Nothing too promising on any fronts IMO until 2 mins ago when I saw the Browns cut Connor Shaw. He's better than Jeff Tuel. Today.

I've been pimping Connor Shaw since the draft. Sign him now.

Right now, both Gay and Schmidt are on the roster as Punter/Kickoff specialists. I can't imagine they'll both be there for long. Looks like we'll have an opening on the 53 coming up shortly. Unless we're just keeping them both on until Week 2, when Nigel comes back.

Probably that.

Our punters are Schmidt, Gay? Sounds like a beer commercial starring Sandler and Farley from SNL in the 90s.

See, that's funny.

We have two punters/KO specialists. We will cut one. Hoping to grab a TE of some sort. There doesn't look to be too many out there. But some type of flyer on a guy might be worth it.

I 100% believe that Schmidt is the long term answer at punter. Watched 2 9ers ps games and he was booming punts with great hang time. Gay was signed as insurance if no one better came along. Someone a lot better did

I wish I could say I lost a bet. JB seemed so excited to make me an avatar in art class, I didn't want to hurt his feelings. That, and I was half worried that if I refused, he would make me into a lampshade for his remote farmhouse. I didn't want to go out that way, so I accepted the avatar.

Hopefully they find somebody better than Brooks, that guy has looked awful IMO.

Entire league is looking for decent backup QBs. Brooks is probably as good as it gets for forth string cb

I think the spot for the punter who gets cut is reserved for Bradham.

I did see a tweet today from someone that said that the Bills might be looking for a tight end, because Lee Smith's injury was far worse than expected.

Because of the suspension to Bradham in the first game, the Bills actually get to keep an extra spot on their roster, 54 instead of 53. There is no need to keep two punters obviously. They both can KO. I guess it's possible they would keep one to punt and one to KO but neither of them are even as good as Hopkins at KO. I think we will try them out for a few days, and then cut one, probably Gay.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification, I was unaware of that. I'd have to agree with you then based on being able to keep 54

If we cut one prior to Sunday and pick someone else up, someone still needs to be cut prior to the next week's game when Bradham comes back.

I still don't know why they signed Gay when Schmidt was also available. I also have no idea why the Bills have two punters, and a guy like Landon Cohen gets cut.

I don't get why so many are concerned with the release of a 5th DT. The Bills will not keep two P/KO guys beyond week one when Bradham is back from suspension. My thought is one of them will be released no later than after the Bears game.

Agreed. The 5th DT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER. He wasn't going to be active if he did make the 53 man. Maybe for once we should trust the fact that the coaches know better.

He's already spent multiple camps on rosters with Schwartz. He's 28. At this point, he is a known quantity, and that quantity seems to be "Training Camp All-Star"
