Does the placement of the bye week really matter?

Been listening to a few pods on the schedule and one of the recurring points I’ve heard is “wish the bye week was a little bit later”.

 

The Eagles had their bye week last year in week 5 and won the Super Bowl.  They also (like the Bills) had to play 3 games prior to the Super Bowl and they even won under those conditions.

 

I’m not entirely convinced it matters.  The Lions had a bye by winning the NFC last year and they were out in the Divisional round so I think while it may be nice to have it mid-season or perhaps a touch later…not completely necessary in my book.

You won't know how much it matters until it happens. If you have a lot of injuries, a bye let will help a bunch.

I always like to see it later - just because more injuries happen as the season moves along, and having that week later in the season gives injured players time to heal.

Makes very little difference.  Some teams that get late byes are already all but eliminated, so the bye does them no good at all.

Ya IMO there's not enough evidence to correlate a late bye being an advantage.

 

Have the majority of teams the last 10 Years or so won the Super Bowl with a late bye? Seems so, but not in convincing fashion.

 

Also could be because of so many factors, which is why it's hard to correlate a late bye with being a big advantage

I prefer the bye being around week 10-12 but for the team I doubt it matters much. Obviously if we get the playoff bye that one really matters

There’s a big gap between it being insurmountable and simply less than ideal

Mentioned this in another post, but one plus in the Bye Week coming after Week 6 is that it gives Hoecht and Ogunjobi two full weeks in the building before they hit the field. It may allow both to hit the ground running in Week 8 with extra preparation.

You can’t look by one season.  If you take historic results then the #1 seed matters.  There will always be exceptions like last year but predominantly the top seed gets to the SB.

As fans, if we want to fixate on this, well, ok.

 

I hope management/coaching isn't, because this is exactly the type of thing that leads to paralysis by analysis.

 

The bye week really doesn't matter that much.

It's the same principle as getting a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The later in the season, the more extra rest is valuable. But rest isn't suddenly going to make your team more talented or anything.

I heard someone say something like the the last 10 or so champions had a bye week 8 or 9 or later

Byes always help,  but to what extent depends on that particular week. 

What's the injury situation,  travel,  have a Thursday night game next...

I don't think so. 

Nothing statistically significant depending on all factors. 

P-value would show it's not statistically significant when ran in minitab.
