Josh Allen not in Pro Bowl because of Pebble Beach tee time, Minshew going as alternate

Recommended Posts

The Pro Bowl is a commercial venture by the NFL. It used to at LEAST be a player vacation in Hawaii.

In the earlier games after the AFL/NFL merger, we used to always root for the AFC, even though we knew it was only an exhibition game.

Why does Brady look 2-4 inches taller than Josh in this clip?

I noticed the same thing.

He might now own part of Nobull athletic shoes, but he wears HOKA brand when he wants to seem taller. 🤔😁

The Pro Bowl wasn’t football, but this isn’t even fake football. It’s Battle of the Network Stars.

Get used to it.  The NFL will be a flag football league in 10 years.

the bolded reads to me like an interesting off season thread topic, Not to derail this thread but I bet a lot of people would have opinions on this.

the kittyfication of football is a concern of the fans. We are consumers and we want the content we want. Too bad if it effects life and limb for the players involved. **shrugs**

anyway...

My comment is based on more than just the recent NFL rule changes…last week, California nearly passed a law banning tackle football for kids under 12 years old…Flag Football is going to be an Olympic sport, and the NFL is heavily promoting this new “sport”…and of course the Pro Bowl nonsense.  I don’t want to turn this political, but it’s where our society is heading…governments are intervening in personal choices “for our own good” more and more, and getting away with it.

California is in a heap of atmospheric trouble today folks. The rain estimates are off the chain along with 60mph winds in some places. Flooding, mudslides, blizzards in the mountains, all of tthat MESS

Stay Safe Cali peeps.

Not a chance this prediction comes true.

You’re not paying attention.  The evidence is everywhere. Could take 12 years instead (right about the time that the sale of gas-powered vehicles is banned in the Western US), but it’s inevitable. Now go back to watching the flag football “Pro Bowl”.

You’re paying so much attention that you’re connecting things that are unrelated.

No it won't.  They are and have spent so much money into CTE research and the redesigns or helmets and other equipment.

Flag football would be a $50 billion dollar loss and the owners aren't going to sign off on that.

I'm not sure how these are connected.

The owners are already doing a lot to promote flag football, and FF will continue to be pushed as an acceptable, safer alternative to tackle football. It will happen first in California, of course, where the legislature has already voted on a law to ban tackle football for kids under 12 years old. NFL players will compete in flag football in the 2026 Olympics, etc…

I am pretty sure the reason is to grow the sport.  Women don't usually play tackle football but they will play flag football which will create new fans of football in general.

I don't understand how this proves or is evidence the NFL Owners are willing to lose Billions of dollars a year on this.  If you take away tackle football, the game is going to fill the stands like the WNBA and I don't understand how you think they want that.

Of course they are going to be playing flag football and not tackle football.  Do you really want Josh Allen taking hits over a summer for Team USA and risking injury for the regular season?

Don't you see?!?  The Lizard People are currently convincing Elon Musk to use his earnings from the sales of Teslas to purchase the NFL (rename it the "XFL") and remove all physicality from the game!

This tournament wasn’t going to be four rounds. Those storms were/are no joke coming in from the ocean/north. The weather can get like this in this area of California practically 12 months a year. In early July, 50 degrees and rainy and windy is a common occurrence. Just hoping the LA Open doesn’t suffer from bad weather this year too.

There is zero evidence that flag football “grows the game”, and of course they aren’t pushing just women’s flag football…as I said, it won’t happen overnight, but the writing is on the wall.  I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so…

This is like when I talk to my neighbor about anything.
"Hey man beautiful day out"

" yeah it is but it's going to rain tomorrow and in a few years we'll all be driving cars that catch fire and bread will be 100 bucks"

"ok, man, have a great day"

Are you always this level of conspiracy?  They are growing another aspect of a sport means they are going to make the NFL flag football too?

The UFC is promoting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Does that mean that soon, there will be no more punching or kicking in the UFC because they are promoting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

So we are going to keep other contact/combat sports like MMA, rugby, boxing, bareknuckle fighting, hockey but eliminate tackle football.  A sport that out grosses all the US sports combined....we're going to gut that.

This is a sport we played through covid.  They cancelled March Madness and we still held a live televised draft lol.  We didn't shorten the season like other sports, or even delay it...we kept it going.

No one is going to ruin this cash cow.

The NFL going to flag football is about as likely as Amazon going back to exclusively only selling books.

I do hope you’re right.

The NFL is as popular as it’s ever been, but I worry that the foundation on which it rests is wobbly. HS football participation numbers are falling every year and college football is committing slow suicide.  This is where NFL players come from, and if these “factories” falter, it will profoundly affect the NFL game. And unlike the other three major sports, there is no real source of international players whose influx strengthens the pool of players from which the teams draw.  This could eventually lead to declining popularity—and declining political influence—which would open the door to major changes in the way the game is played.

There will always be enough talent in this country to field 32 NFL teams.  Especially if the sport grows globally, you'll get talent there too.  We didn't get MLB talent from Japan until the mid 90's and now look at that culture now.  Same thing with the NBA, the Dream Team is what made the World start loving basketball.  Now top NBA players come from Europe on a regular basis.

The game is going to continue to grow in numbers and participants because the country is going to keep growing in population.  High School football has gotten so big in Atlanta that in the last 10 years, they have added two more divisions.  My high school used to be a AAAA school, biggest division.  Now they are AAAAAA because there are so many more schools being built and this is creating more football players.

Flag football will grow more fans for the NFL.  You generally gain interest in something you're participating in.  Now women and girls play football now comfortably...it's not just a "boys" sport anymore.

We see it all the time.  People who start to learn to cook will watch more things about cooking, people who start training in Jiu Jitsu start watching the UFC, my son played soccer for the first time last spring and guess what he wants to watch a lot of now, people who start to golf will watch more things about golf etc....when you start participating in something in which you enjoy, you are going to more interested in it.

That's an interesting perspective, but it's really just anecdotal, and where I live (on the West Coast), it's just the opposite.  Here is a long but very interesting recent article on this topic from the Washington Post.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/interactive/2023/football-participation-decline-politics-demographics/

Basically, rates of participation in HS football are declining precipitously nationwide (about 13 percent over the past 10 years, and the decline is even steeper in younger age brackets), although in certain regions, mostly in the South, rates have held pretty steady.  It's a highly complex issue that has political, racial and economic components.  One thing the article makes clear is that the NFL considers these declining participation rates "an existential threat".  Hence, among other things, their promotion of flag football.  It's not out of the question to think that in some parts of the country, tackle football will cease to exist in its current format and that will drive major changes at the NFL level, too.

And by the way, the idea that the NFL is ever going to benefit from a significant influx of foreign players is nothing more than a pipe dream.  There is really nowhere else on the planet outside of North America where tackle football is more than a fringe sport and I don't see how that's ever going change, for a lot of reasons.  There is certainly no noticeable increase in foreign players playing in the NFL, despite many years of the NFL promoting itself internationally.

The rest of the world pretty much laughs at American football. This isn’t basketball. Like, at all. There are two paths to the NFL. Super duper talented athletic, or playing tackle football as a young teen and working hard with the early instincts developed. Europe isn’t doing that on a whole. Chris Spielman isn’t grinding it out as a youth on the deforested fields of the Sudetenland.

Flag football isn’t a serious step to the NFL.
