Great post. Thanks.

I will only say that I, too, am not in favor of firing Beane. I AM in favor of firing McDermott (at season's end, assuming no turnaround resulting in playoffs).

If you think that Beane is a good GM, as I do, then letting him pick his own head coach for the first time is appealing.

I understand what you're saying about he and McDermott being a package deal, and maybe that's the case, but we have no way of knowing. Beane just signed an extension, has stated he loves working for the Pegulas, and presumably his family is settled in Buffalo. It's hard for me to imagine him being so tied to McDermott that it's an "if he goes, I go" situation.

Personally, at this point I think my preferred outcome would be Beane staying, but the entire coaching staff being cleared out and a new one being hired.

After some serious thought into the matter of Beane, (McDermott should be gone after missing playoffs) Beane should probably get another shot with an Offensive HC.  Beane had done some really dumb thong, bit he did construct a successful roster including Allen.  He has made terrible picks and fa acquisitions, but maybe all those defense picks, fa's never happen with a offensive coach, or they actually use the talent acquired.  Im willing to give Beane another chance, he is not losing games on the field with the current roster, the coaches are

Ben Johnson

Floated this in a thread awhile back, he’s def the guy and we have a ready made qb at the helm.  How often do you get to step into a job with a decent roster (needs fine tuning) & arguably 1 of the 5 best qb in the league.

I think he’d be more than interested.

We already know MCD isn’t the guy he’s had ample time to prove and has done nothing but disappoint. Don’t get me wrong he was the right guy as the “fixer”, he’s just reached his ceiling.

Is the risk reward of firing McDermott worth it? I don't see a coach out there that is worth the risk of firing McDermott. At the very least he has made the Bills relevant the last 5/6 years. Something the city was craving/needed.

Who is out there that would truly make a difference as HC.

IMO theres only 1 coach, and thats a trade with the rams for McVay.

The reason to get a new voice in there after 6 seasons is that the team is not moving in the right trajectory. Especially Josh, his evolution depends on an innovative, offensive minded HC. Until there is an exhaustive search, no one can say who’s the right person. Who knows which coaches will be available from the collegiate or professional ranks. I’ll tell you the guys I would love. Dan Lanning( Oregon) Ben Johnson (Lions) Brian Johnson (Eagles) Bottom line, a HC has. 5 year window before his voice gets stale.

Stats like passer rating and Time of possession always make me wonder if these stats are correlative vs causative (i.e. a reflection of success rather than a cause of it). For me there are two main other considerations in firing McDermott:

1) Can Beane fire McD given how they were hired as a package (surely he can technically do so, but practically I'm not sure this is in play). By extension are we saying get rid of Beane as well then? I've been pretty happy with the level of talent and the moves he's made and I'm not sure I want a new GM.

2) How do NFL teams quantify the value of continuity in assessing personnel decisions. Many this week might say, if the continuity is flawed then what are you preserving, does that by extension mean it is absolutely without value, I doubt that. Emotional fans might think so (of which I am often one), but I doubt Terry and Beane see it this way.

Just ask Allen's draft mates (Darnold, Mayfield) what they think about continuity? That being said it's clearly not the whole equation as evidenced by the Dorsey/Daboll transition.

All this to say, I'm assuming McDermott/Beane go together, given the massive upheaval this will cause I would rather assume the risk of trotting this, at times, mis-managed team out for another year (sans-injuries, hopefully) than rolling the dice with an entirely new GM and HC.

Elite passing performances are causation. I promise.

It occured to me today that some speculated that McD was on the hot seat coming into this season and that is why Frazier "took a year off".

Like Frazier the coach, love the man. But christ, if this team goes from McD to Leslie Frazier I am going to be upset. The reason I am suddenly bothered is because it is not non-zero.

There is a better chance I am coaching the Bills if McDermott gets fired over Frazier. If anything, I could see Pegula making a big move like hiring Bill with PSL's and raised ticket prices coming if he wants to make a big splash. Otherwise, they will most likely go the coordinator route someone like Lions OC Ben Johnson or Eagles OC Brian Johnson as examples.

There's a guy called Rex Ryan I see on TV sometimes. He's always very passionate and looks like he's no stranger to a chicken wing or 20. It would be some impressive, erm, feet if we could land him

Most importantly with him....He doesn't kiss any rings

If Detroit’s oline follows him then Ben Johnson

What Slowik is doing in Houston is impressive.

But those guys are 1A and 1B for me.

Unless he at least gets to a Super Bowl or wins one.

You have a decade of credibility after that.  Maybe more.

If Orlovsky was serious, I wouldnt be against giving him a shot. Although I'd prefer under a new HC.

I'd just be shocked if Dan is serious about giving up his cushy commentating job, and time with his young family, to take a miserable coordinating job.

He'd have a great place to raise his young family here in Buffalo.

I’d like to see Orvlosky in something other than an analyst role before becoming a full blown OC. Think the Kellen Moore route

He was an NFL QB

Can’t argue with the success of the Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan coaching trees.  Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell coached with both.

Mike McDaniel, Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryan’s are doing well as Shanahan descendants.  On Shanahan’s current staff is our old friend Anthony Lynn as assistant head coach/RBs.  Lynn had varying success as head coach of the Chargers.  Other offensive coaches include Gary Kubiaks’ sons as Offensive passing game coordinator  (Klint) and assistant QB coach (Klay), Brian Griese as QB coach, Bobby Turner as RB coach and Chris Foerster as running game coordinator.  The Niners current Defensive Coordinator is Steve Wilks who failed miserably in his one season as Arizona Cardinals coach.

The Rams staff features Mike LaFleur as Offensive Coordinator and Raheem Morris as Defensive Coordinator.  Morris had a mediocre 3 year stint as head coach of Tampa Bay.

I believe, if McDermott were to be fired, the Bills should go after an offensive coach as a new head coach.

So, the best options from the above could be

1.  bringing back Anthony Lynn;

2.  Klint Kubiak who has extensive experience as an offensive coach, including 3 years with his dad in Denver, and 3 seasons as a coordinator.

3. Mike LaFleur who has several years experience as an NFL Offensive Coordinator.
