John Harbaugh on the importance of preseason

In context, his comments were based off of the Ravens record 24 preseason game winning streak coming to an end.

But, he hits the nail on the head on why preseason is still important. Not the outcome of games, the 90s Bills proved that the outcome doesn’t matter, but fighting for a spot on the field matters.

Even when we go to an 18 game season (which I’m in favor of), preseason will still have its place.

"Preseason games that people want to write about and say they don't mean anything because you never played the game. You never were out there in a preseason game. You never were fighting for a spot on the field. And yet you have the audacity to say that the effort that somebody puts into that to fight and win a game like that is meaningless."

Yeah, it is important for the guys fighting for a roster spot and positions on the depth chart. For those guys it is the most important thing in the world.

For the starters it is a glorified practice.

Yup. And it's important for the lower guys on the roster to put good stuff on tape even if they aren't making the squad. This is a job interview for 31 other teams as well

Case in point, Blacksheer last season. Played the final PS game against Carolina and impressed them enough to get signed to their active roster when they needed RB help. These games for them can be life changing.

The score in a preseason game has value only as one of many indicators of how individuals and the team as a whole played in the game.  It can be a faulty indicator though.  If one coach plays his starters for three quarters of the game while the other coach keeps his starters on the sideline, the score becomes meaningless.

Most of the players on the 1st string aren't fighting for spots.

This quote is in reference to people trying to make the team which he's absolutely right.  Which is why you shouldn't play starters vs 2nd/3rd/4th stringers in preseason games....those guys are playing for everything.

also, what do you gain by starters v. backups.  Play your starters vs. another team for a quarter or so.

I have always heard of coming to camp in shape but them being in game shape which was one thing i never understood about how so many fans hated the pre season .

Maybe the idea of paying in season prices for tickets for pre season games is something but i still feel that playing against other teams rather than practicing against your own team mates is much more beneficial due to the more intense competition & in game speed compared to team practice .

Just look at how bad the 1's did last week in their first game . If they go to no preseason games that would be 1 in the L column all because they weren't in game shape being it physical or the timing against real competition .
