56 years worth.  But I think what you are asking is how many times has there actually been a HC and starting QB together 5 years or more and didn't win it.

Andy Ried and Donovan McNabb

Dan Reeves and John Elway

Sam Wyche and Boomer Esiason

Marv Levy and Jim Kelly

Mike Smith and Matt Ryan

Ron Rivera and Cam Newton

Andy Ried and Alex Smith

Jeff Fisher and McNair

Don Shula and Dan Marino

Marvin Lewis and Andy Dalton

Chuck Pagano and Andrew Luck

Bruce Arians and Carson Palmer

Of the 31 head coaches to win at least one Super Bowl, 27 of them won their first championship within the first five seasons with that team. Only Chuck Noll (six years in Pittsburgh), John Madden (eight years in Oakland), Tom Landry (12 years in Dallas), Bill Cowher (14 years in Pittsburgh) and Andy Ried (7 years in KC) needed more than five years to capture that elusive first ring.

Only 4 coaches and QB tandems got their fist SB win exactly 5 years in

John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco

Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning

Mike Holmgren and Brett Favre

Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw

I don't think McDermott and Allen winning a SB together in the next few years would be a particularly surprising break with history...........that's a threshold just waiting to be crossed.    Especially with the depth at the QB position in todays NFL.

Now Andy Reid not winning his first SB until his 21st year as a HC.........with all the #1 seedings that he squandered along the way............that is such a crazy anomaly that it will never be matched.    30 years from now when everybody playing currently will be ancient history........that fact will be a real bit of stunning trivia.

Vegas has us behind only KC and Philly. Is that not contending as a favorite to you? Or should we listen to the people here?

I follow the odds but contending to me speaks to results, not projections

You can't be a SB contender if ya don't make the playoffs yearly.

I would say you can't be a SB contender if you don't make it out of the divisional round yearly

Haven’t really read through the entire thread, but I’m not sure people want him fired now?… I think the pressure is mounting though.  Could def make a case for after this season if things go backwards or like I said, after the following if no SB is reached.

Didn’t mean to imply people were wanting him fired now, although there are probably some that do; just wondering why people are upset if he can be fired at anytime, anyway. Bottom line is there is absolutely no reason for people to be overreacting to a routine NFL transaction and the extension doesn’t preclude Pegula from firing him before the term is up.

No, to contend means that you have a good chance of doing well in something upcoming. That is what the word means.

I mean, c'mon now... "Terry Pegula extended McDermott's, and Beane's contracts to send a message to the uppity blacks on the team" is maybe the most bizarre, steaming hot take I've ever read on this site.

Well that is oversimplifying. It’s more about the timing and sending a message. But yeah people are probably right. This stuff never happens. No way they would ever take issue with a black player “having attitude” or questioning them. What’s next. White people mad that black history is being taught? No never.

IMO winning your division kind of makes you a contender and McBeanes team has done that how many years in a row ?

That’s why winning the division is always job one. You do that, you’re in the dance and a SB contender. Simple as that.

You're the one who quoted me their SB odds. I know the Bills odds. Unfortunately they're not representative of much beyond Vegas can finally make $$ on BUF after taking a beating pre 2022 when they finally pegged us to the right price and the public lost out on betting the Bills going 8-10 ats

I mean in that sense yes they are contenders as much as any decent team in the conference is a SB contender because they made the playoffs, but realistically only the Chiefs and Bengals can actually lay claim to that because they're the only ones who have actually been in contention for a Super Bowl the last 3 years.

Why don't you try to make abortion into about the extension FFS

Vegas doesn't play the games. Haven't even made a  Championship game in 2 years let alone the SB. Last year everyone said just get Home field. How did that work out?

Every teams wins games during a season. You should be more specific. How do you define success in the NFL?

This is a loaded question

One team wins the Super Bowl every year

Should all the coaches that are not on the team being fired should the GM be let go if his team does not win the Super Bowl

It’s pointless. Nice try, but it reason will go nowhere. If your child isn’t the Valedictorian every year, you really need to look into an orphanage somewhere.

On average over 20% of those 31 HCs do get fired annually

We have no idea how McD will do in the future. We know thus far he's been below average.

I'll ask for a 3rd time... what year should they have won the super bowl?  Which year did they lose in the playoffs to an inferior team?

Your counterexample is also loaded and ridiculous, even if rhetorical. Expectations are measured by many factors. One of them is the quality of your team. Do you have a franchise qb, etc.? No one can plausibly expect a team without one to have much of a chance at a Super Bowl. Given the nature of the Bills, I think there ought to be an expectation that the team will do well and advance beyond the division round of the playoffs. I'm not writing off McDermott and Beane. I like them, but they will be judged by post-season success or lack thereof.

This is a strawman.

No one is arguing that coaches should be fired for not winning a Super Bowl in any given year.

But what if they go the better part of the decade, with a top 5 QB, and never even MAKE the Super Bowl? What about then?
