Go all in this year, then tank next year and be in a spot to reset and replace Lance in 2024. Yeah but they have to get a new deal done, or else they are stuck paying that $12M/yr. And now that the trade has been done BEFORE a new deal is in place, CMC has the 9ers bent over a barrel, just like Tunsil did to BOB and the Texans. They are racing to the point where their only choice will be to pay CMC big money, or give up all those picks for a 4 month rental. I thought part of the trade talks dragging on was the new team working on a restructure. We may still see one, but it will be under the graciousness of CMC. Even if SF gets to the Super Bowl, it's going to be Jimmy G vs a franchise QB from the AFC (hopefully Josh Allen). This reminds me of the time back in 2019 when I looked at an upcoming December night game Bills at Steelers where Pittsburgh was favored and thought Josh Allen vs Duck Hodges, laughed and then raced to the casino to bet the Bills on the money line. You are falling for a sunk cost fallacy. After this season CMC is still an asset with 0 guaranteed money. That makes him a valuable trade commodity if SF wanted to cut bait, or they can not agree on a restructure. Without any guaranteed money there is no hit for SF to trade him if it did not work out, and it allows the trading team to restructure his contract. The draft assets were too rich for Buffalo. I say that as a fan that did want him here as a rental, but not at that cost. SF has $15.9 million in cap space in 2023 with McCaffrey's $12M salary accounted for (OTC is fast!). I've shown how that easily gets dropped to 6-8 million next year freeing up 4-6 million more for SF in 2023 through a basic restructure. Agreed Buffalo didn't have the cap room for even a restructure CMC would agree to, and once the price went to 4 picks it didn't make sense here as a rental. McCaffery has a higher ceiling, but Montgomery has a much, much higher floor. McCaffery's floor is at ground zero due to injury risk, IMHO.
