TheAthletic piece on Kumerow

Nice piece in TheAthletic on Kumerow's journey: https://theathletic.com/2748457/2021/08/03/wr-jake-kumerows-journey-from-aaron-rodgers-secret-weapon-to-the-do-it-all-riser-of-bills-camp/

My favorite quote:

Quote

“I love my position here, I love this team here, I love this organization, so when it came chance that I could make it back here, it was a no brainer for me,” he said. “I wanted to be back with the boys, be on the Bills, be part of this tradition and this family.”

Yes, we know.  So are TBN articles.  A lot of other sites too.  Your point?

Back to the article:  I thought this part was interesting

Quote

The Bills have also heavily incorporated Kumerow, according to him, into all four phases of special teams. Additional functionality for a depth receiver is often critical. For an organization that backs up their press conference emphasis about special teams with roster actions, Kumerow’s prowess in that area could mean a lot on cutdown day.

“My position is a football player,” Kumerow said. “I like to be out there on any phase, whether it be offense or special teams. Whatever the team needs me to do. I enjoy playing special teams. Shoot, running down on kickoff is pretty fun…. especially when you make a tackle inside the 20, or even the guy next to you makes a tackle inside the 20. It just gets you fired up, ready to go.”

The 5th and especially the 6th WR pretty much have to play teams.  But I hadn't realized the Bills had subbed Kumerow in at Gunner:

Quote

By Week 9, when Taiwan Jones had to miss time with a hamstring injury, Kumerow stepped into Jones’ substantial special teams role in an essential one-for-one exchange.

That's very promising for him.  Just as a note, Taiwain Jones missed 2 weeks (9 and 10) but Kumerow kept getting ST snaps.

You get what you pay for.  Try ponying up some coin once in a while as the articles you read about the Bills are researched and written by people who do that for a living.

Hes one of the best blocking WR's in the NFL.

Considering we play a ton of 4WR sets hes a valuable asset to have in both the pass and run game.

I hope and think he sticks as WR6

It sure sounds like he's in a decent position to make the final roster

Given his value on STs, I think that he's the odds-on favorite as the 6th WR (McKenzie is the 5th).  Hodgins would benefit from a year on the PS.

I’m getting a scary sense Kumerow is our new guy on here, Dukes time is almost over and it seems Jake may be taking his place. (I kid I kid)

What took you so long?

I mean, when Kumerow was elevated off the practice squad Week 9 and remained on the roster for 6 games whilst Duke was still on the PS, shouldn't the Clue Bird have perched then?

I don’t recall seeing many threads for him last season. Seems to be a bunch popping up for this preseason. Makes sense since he’s performing well. It has the look he’s becoming a fan favorite ( besides the few who want him traded to Green Bay for a late round pick)

Oh, I "get it" now, you're talking about the role of Preseason Fan Favorite, not about actual chance to make the roster and stick around.

I think many of the people that wanted trade him, just had a feeling he was going to be the odd guy out and they’d prefer to get something for him than releasing him for nothing.

I don’t think it had anything to do with his play or that they didn’t want him. All indications from camp are that he’s doing really well and looking like a favorite for the 6th spot.

Agreed, especially since that allows the Bills to be more comfortable keeping Brieda over Jones.

I'll go further and say, at this point all signs point to Stevenson and Hodgins needing some time to develop (though it's early days and that could change).  The right place for them to develop is the practice squad, and I think most people know that....but are concerned that if we don't put them on the roster they'll get poached off waivers.

Well, they could.  But I think the rosters around the league this year are full of promising guys who need development, and given the virtual lead-up to the draft I think this year more than many, teams will be inclined to stay with the guys they've seen in camp and not go fishing elsewhere.

Although, I wonder if Bills passing game players are held in high esteem now? DabolI and staff sure seem to know how to coach them up. I suspect we will see alot of Hodgins and Kumerow in pre-season and if they play well. I would worry about getting them on the PS, especially Kumerow in light of Rodgers stance on him.

Totally agree - there are a few places where this is true.

Can Kumerow displace Jones - allowing us to keep just 3 RBs rather than 4?
Can McKenzie (McKittrick 😂) win both Kick-off and punt return duties?

Which depth LBs with Special team abilities step up to allow Klein to get moved?

There is potential for a slightly different roster makeup this year with certain guys filling new roles.  I think this makes camp super interesting at certain back-up roles where we could see 7 WRs and 3 RBs rather than 6 and 4.

With the expanded practice squad and veterans on the PS - I hope we get younger and use those spots on guys like Jones and maybe Addison/Butler as safety fall backs and keep more young guys with future potential.

Agreed. At least, I know that was my original concern is that either would get poached.

But Kumerow has made it so that I’m willing to take that chance.

The only thing giving me mild hesitation is that I was hoping Stevenson could step in and be that dynamic kick returner. Not sure how much he’s shown in that regard at camp.

I commented elsewhere that there hasn't been a lot of coverage of the kicking game, other than some comments after (I think) the first practice that McKenzie looked noticeably smoother and more confident than the other two.  But someone else made the valid point that until pads go on, you really can't tel too much

Gotcha. Just another quick point too, I know how fashionable it’s become to bash Rodgers lately, but if Kumerow really does make this team, it really does lend credibility to Rodgers’ complaints.

If he can make it on this team, that is incredibly stacked at that position. So much so that they may leave two valued draft picks available for the taking I don’t see how people can look past that. The mvp of the league said this guy has the goods, he’s the 2nd best receiver on the team and they let him walk? If that doesn’t scream mismanagement what does?

Fans on this message board get riled up over super fringe fliers getting waived, I couldn’t imagine if that situation played out on the Bills.

I wonder if he could play defense on hands team for hail mary passes.

I understand the concern in losing both guys, but I think the fans focus on them more than the rest of the league does. Hodgins is a late round pick from last year, not sure how many teams are really looking at him. Kind of the same deal with Stevenson-he was a late round pick for a reason as well. I think both have more value to the Bills than other teams. Think about it, are any of us thinking about late round picks from this year or last year from other teams and hope they get cut so we can pick them up?

After 5 days of training camp? No.  After the coaches watch tape of these guys in preseason games?  Maybe.

There always has to be one...

On a side note, I've been following all of the camps and Robert Foster is now that guy for the Dolphins.

I actually have been wondering about C Wade.  It's been 🦗 about him.

I was hoping the Bills would try him out in the Return game as I see that as a place his Rugby skills and speed might best position him for an impact, but apparently No

Oh man..

I really thought Foster could play for someone. But….. if he couldn’t crack that packer receiver group or even Washington.. I’m happy Miami has someone to cheer for lol. Fuller and Parker and big Preston haven’t exactly been the poster boys for durability. Surely Tua is happy to have a speed threat to toss bombs to.. (I actually had such a big smile trying to type that)

The question is can he show up and show out more in the games?

There are two sides to the Green Bay cutting him sitch.

The GB FO side is maybe that Kumerow had looked very good at the end of the 2018 season, getting two starts and catching 3 of 3 targets and 3 of 4 targets.  In 2019, when he made the roster, he was inconsistent when he got his chance to play.  He made key receptions in some games.  He also disappeared (didn't get open) or only caught half his targets in other games.  He was 27.  So one can see the GB FO looking at him in camp and saying "this guy looks good in preseason, but he looked good last year too then vanished, we'd rather keep a young guy we think has a higher ceiling"

Of course, if you're smart, you want to talk to The Franchise and at least find out what he's seeing from under center when he looks down the field, too, and at least have him a bit in the loop on what you're thinking.  But I can see (for example) GB wanting to see more who they had in Equanimeous St Brown who was IR'd in 2019 but returning in 2020 (I think the answer is now known as 'not much')

I don't know enough about the Green Bay roster to know how they saw Special Teams.  They did use Kumerow on ST in 2018 and 2019.
