For me Rush and Neil Young  top the list.

This ^^^^ easily

Can’t believe that nobody has said Justin Bieber or Nickleback.

On a more serious note - by sheer popularity Celine Dion should be mentioned. Others missed include: Paul Anka, Bryan Adams, K.D. Lang and Bruce Cochburn.

On a personal note - I liked some of the odd music that came out of Canada in the 80’s and early 90’s - Rough Trade, Loverboy and Heart come to mind. I believe a group named the Box also came out of Montreal in this period - their music was unique but sometimes good.

Lot of good ones.  Not a band but Joni Mitchell is Canadian.  Arcade Fire, The Tragically Hip, Three Days Grace, Steppenwolf, The New Pornographers all haven't been mentioned yet.

And yes Gug I ignored your OP instructions.

For all-time best, it's tough to argue against Neil Young and Rush (although I'm not much of a Rush fan, I still get it).

The Tragically Hip will always be up there for me.

For some lesser known greats from the 90s:

The Tea Party

Odds

Our Lady Peace

Glueleg

I Mother Earth

Moist

The Headstones

The Tea Party being the best of the bunch. They were like a grungy Zeppelin. Some classic early-90s styles here...

Ann Murray - THE SNOWBIRD HAS LANDED!

In all seriousness, Rush has to be at the top of the list. I also really like Triumph. More obscure are Aldo Nova and Kim Mitchell - you know, the stuff the always played on Q107 back in the day....

Aldo Nova ... forgot about them. Sort of a one hit wonder group though with the androgynous 80’s look.

Heart is from Seattle. Still great.

For those who haven't heard Shakespeare My Butt, give it a try.

I wore that CD out back in the day.

Barenaked Ladies were great college music and always a really fun live show. Lots of great nostalgia from my college years

And I’m not even ashamed of that statement. They’re all incredibly talented musicians, whether you care for their style or not.  Saw them cover Beastie Boys “Shake Your Rump”  and they tore it up, especially on the upright bass.

1. Rush

2. The Hip

3. BNL

You and I have very similar music tastes.  I was shocked to see you list BNL.  If I had to name my least favorite band of all time, my knee jerk response would be BNL.  Not saying that to bash you for liking them; just pointing out that even though people can like a lot of the same music, there will always be outliers!  (one of many things that makes music awesome)

Wikipedia's article on 'Canadian content' helps shed some light on which artists are considered Canadian.  There's a few technicalities that some might exploit to the act's advantage in receiving more Canadian airplay.

I cannot link directly, just Google 'Canadian content' to see the Wikipedia article.

Is a lot of their stuff corny as f—?? Absolutely.

But they have some great cuts on their first two records, and those albums were both before they really had commercial success in the states.

Part of their appeal to me was their embrace of and by the “bordertown culture”.  They had some truly epic performances at Sheas.

I turned a lot of downstaters on to them when I was at UB in the 90s. For the most part, they’re just silly fun, and the live shows were incredibly entertaining. Lots of crowdplay and off-the-cuff improv.  Any schmoe can play a tune, you gotta give the people a show. To me, I put showmanship up there w technical chops any day. They have both.

I believe it and, in fairness, I've not listened to much of them.  But after any/all that I have heard, they're batting .000 with me.  No biggie.

But I do agree ... gotta give a show.  This is why I don't knock Nickelback.  Would I ever pop a Nickelback album on?  Nope.  Not my thing.  But I did see them in concert and man, they were entertaining as hell!!  And they absolutely have talent, too.  I'd pay to see them again in a heartbeat.  They were that fun to watch.

I saw them in 1996 at Ohio University. Probably 200 people there. It was essentially Rock Spectacle re-done in front of me. Great times.

Put it this way; I like whiskey. I like gin. I like my double IPAs. But every now and then, hmm *browses menu* yeah gimme that Frozen Banana Banshee;)

To yr Nickelback point, like food, I’m not gonna argue w ppl. Someone doesn’t like tomatoes, welp I’m not gonna try to convince them that they do.

I likes what I likes and vice versa.

Rush is the Alpha and Omega for me.

The Hip has some great songs to play and listen to.

One band I'm really into is Big Wreck. Ian Thornley has an amazing voice.

The Tea Party is like Canada's 90's version of The Doors, still around to this day.

Triumph is another favorite
