LeVeon Bell’s teammates turning on him (update: still not back)

He's not taking the injury risk into consideration. I look at it like this: Bell wants $40M guaranteed. If he plays this whole year under the tag he gets $14.5M, but if he gets injured at any point it's very unlikely his next contract would include $26M in guarantees to equal the $40M (14.5+26) he feels he's worth. So if he sits for 10 weeks and gets only 7/17ths of his $14.5M ($5.99M) tender, it's still a better deal considering he only has to play half a season (50% reduction in wear and tear, similar reduction in injury likelihood) imo. He loses about $8.5M this season but makes up the difference 5x on the new deal.

People who hold out and don’t get themselves in perfect shape always get some type of nagging injury when they come back.

He's not coming back this year.  At this point it would be stupid for him to come back.  He's not going back to a "bell cow" role the way Conner has played and if he did get hurt this year he's out the ~$10 mil he'll have lost in this year salary, plus his future deal.  He'll sit out the whole year and dare the Steelers to tag him again.

It's not like the Steelers weren't trying. It sounds like they put some decent deals on the table.

He should have just taken their $60 million contract in 2017. Seriously.

Why?  That's not what he wanted.  He's not getting used up.  He will get his contract from someone.  The Steelers have a good player in Connor. Win-win.

I can't see any team paying him over 60 mil but their are a lot of variables in how much is guaranteed and how the contract is structures. 60 mil seems like the most money a RB will get in the NFL. Anyone know what Shadys contract is off the top of their head

Todd Gurleys 60 mil deal had 45 of it Guaranteed. The Steelers deal had to be close to this, Bell will loose money because of this big time.

Just wait until you see the desperation Beane will be under in the offseason.  Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Beane throw tons of money at Bell and spinning it that it fills multiple holes.

Hmmm it kind of does. I would love to have Bell, but I don’t think his me first attitude fits McDermott

Dare them?  Or....what?  They aren't going to pay the tag money for him.  They would only tag him to break his balls---make him sign the tender before another team could sign him.

This is playing out perfectly for Bell.  Show up week 10, get your year of service, then become a FA.  No way the Steelers tag him again.  BTW, if he doesn't show up, the Steelers automatically have him tagged next year at no increase to them.  He will show in week 10.

If he doesn't report this year, they may also just choose to not tag him this offseason and say good riddance since both sides seem more than satisfied with a divorce.

What if they cut him in week 9?  Take the cap hit.  He's screwed a bit more.

But he really just screwed himself with this holdout.  He's proving to the next team he'll take less money than the Steelers already tried to give him---and that he's worth less than they were going to pay him (given his age and the the status of his replacement).

Just dumb.

So he should have risked injury to play under the tag for the 2nd year in a row?  How did that work for Earl Thomas?

tell him to go cry to the NFLPA as they negotiated and players ratified the cba that expressly lays out how and when franchise tags and transition tags can be used.

Bell is clearly a high roller taking these chances.

Sean Gilbert begs to differ.

Why?

When he was tagged a second time, he was allowed to take it to arbitration.  Players now can be tagged 3 times.

Bell will never get a contract for more than the one the Steelers offered him.  Why would any team pay more for a RB (who's not Todd Gurley).
