Move always wondered what they would do with a name that already ends in those letters. Wiley-ey? And then there’s a name like Smith. I suppose it has to be Smitty, but I’m not crazy about nicknames that actually lengthen a name.

Yeah ah I know, great topic after the 10th win in a row.

Wiles.

I'm really glad they got #10 last night, because playing two of the next three @ TB and @ Nashville is a beast of a trip!

Also...does anyone else think Jeanneret is trying a little too hard?  The "scary good" thing at the end of last night's game felt forced.

As AD said, "celly" has been a hockey word for a long while. That said, people who are asking did it come up in the last few weeks are somewhat correct, too. It's been all over the football world, I assume perhaps because of the NFL team celebrations this year. So in the last couple months (even to last year) fans all over the place have been using that word, which has crept into the consciousness.

On another point from above, I have been convinced that Terry and Kim fell in love with Sean McDermott from the time they met him, and his young, no nonsense, "trust the process" demeanor and plan, which is why they hired Jason Botterill when the GM job became open (as well as Brandon Beane). They're similar in a lot of ways although, of course, not everything.

Botterill and Housley, as far as pushing all the right buttons and pulling all the right strings, are as hot as their team is. Keep it up, boys.

I also don't discount how hiring McD affected Pegulas' realization that Murray was a bum.

Yeah, that is part of the same thing. They loved the no-nonsense stuff, which was the complete opposite of the clownshow of Rex and the weirdness of GMTM, which was happening alongside both of their teams losing, and the fans all over town and twitter beginning to question the Pegulas' smarts.

Exactly.  Just pay attention to the nicknames teammates have for each other.  It's almost exclusively a shortened last name with either an "S" or an "LY."

The improvement in Tage's play has been noticeable recently.  He's really starting to look like an asset.

You forgot "mer" or "mers".

Like Pominville is Pommer or Pommers.

Edit:  I've got nothing else to say about this team.  I don't know how to refrain from complaining. Just trying to relax a bit and enjoy a 10 game streak, but I'm jittery  and nervous.  If they beat TB and then Toronto next week, I will be unconscious.

What both Botterill and McDermott had in common is that both of them had a vision how an organization should be shaped and operated. Each of the two had a concept how not only a team should be built but also how the organization should be structured top to bottom. Botterill believed in the Pittsburgh model on how a team should be built and also how important it was to emphasize the development process in the minors.

The Pegulas had first hand experience with showmen who were adept at garnering attention and being quotable but an inability to go beyond their shallowness. It doesn't matter what pro sport you are involved in the competition is steep. Not hiring thoughtful and analytical people is a recipe for failure. It's more than building a team as it is building a coherent organization.

I think LY is just a common abbreviation.  The general rule is to add a Y or S to the shortened name as it fits.

Love hearing that call after having to listen to the Sharks announcers being oh so disappointed all game.

btw, have they changed the rule about tossing guys out of the circle or was the ref tonight just in the mood to toss and lecure every guy on every faceoff?

They made some tweaks to the face off rules last season, and made it a point of emphasis to start strictly enforcing faceoff violation rules that were already in the rulebook.

They havent been as bad with it as they were to start last season. But some refs are still more strict than others (like the refs last night...).

It drives me nuts. I feel like I am always yelling at the TV, saying “drop the ******* puck already!”. lol

My wife growing up had a neighbor.  She'd tack a "y" onto everybody's name.  Got a guy like that at work.  Christine becomes Christy.  Well... My wife's neighbor would call me "Ricky" short for Eric.  WTF?  Anyway, she named all her kids ending in "y."  Her name was Hazel... LoL... So when my son was born, we named him: Ethan.  Hazel goes to us, our inlaws: "What kind of name is that!"  LoL.... All the names in my wife's family easily accept the "y" thing.

Gee... I hope nobody is on board that knows her.  No disrespect, but she was ridiculous.  I Wonder if she was Canadian.  Canadians (and appears Texans) have a thing for nicknames.  Canadians and the "y" thing.

Anyway... What's Dahlin's nickname?

Haven't heard it yet, but I'm guessing "Dahlsy"

Edit:  could also be "Dahls" or "Dahllers"

I thought I saw a play on the name Rasmus for him at some point earlier today when I was reading something.  They can use it for him since Ristolainen already has "Risto".

This neighbor didn't happen to go to Orchard Park HS, did she?

never mind that the Sabres have been entanked for what, 6 seasons or so?

Come on man, try harder.

The Bills tanked 19 years.  My response was to YOLOs post-keeping the right inherited players, knowing who to trade, and who to trade for, and going from worst to first in one year.  Beane is on the right track, but Botterell is quickly outpacing him

My wife grew up on Abbott just South of Thruway (across from Fisher).  Went to Lackawanna High School. But her cousins under a mile South on Abbott towards Stadium went to West Seneca West (where I went).  O.Park is right there too.

They may have.  Lived on Line where W.Seneca, O.Park, & Lackawanna meet.

The neighbor was older, older than my wife's parents and my parents (born in 1930s)... She did have relatives in Hamburg (I think?), the neighbor that is.

I knew somebody may know her!  Really nice lady, but a bit eccentric with the "Y" thing. LoL...

To be fair, the Sabres already had their qb in house when Boterell took over. It’s so much easier when you are already sure with your top guy.

And no, the bills did not tank for 19 years. They were actually trying for a good portion of that run, which makes it so much worse.

She was older... I think She is passed away now.  She'd probably be late 80s 90s now?  Because her children were older than us and my wife's siblings (late 50s).

I'd have to ask my wife more questions, but I think eccentricity runs in the family.  Trust me, I am an expert on the subject of eccentricity.  LoL... ?

My best friend's family (I grew up in S.Cheek) went to West... Actually knew her as a family friend.  They would go visit her.  She lived right next to my wife growing up.

I think... Again... Think she had family near Hamburg.  My wife's cousins a few blocks down live in O.Park.  Went to W.Seneca West.  So, the lines all muddied there.

You may have known her children...Or other family...???

Very quirky.  For years after getting married, you could always count on Her to be the first to send out Christmas cards.  We'd get her's like middle November.  Always addressed with "Y's" on end of our names.  She never wrote my Son's name... LMAO...

I just know she was over-compensating for having a hard name to end in a "Y"...Why she was in denial about my Son's name.

Sounds good to me. Make it hard for the Leaves to keep good players.

I think this will definitely happen and I won’t be surprised to see an offer north of $14m for Matthews.

I wonder how many times he’s heard Shanahan’s “guys will have to take a discount in exchange for winning championships in Toronto” speech.

I am not sure which is worse- 2-14 or 8-8?  The Bills have had plenty of both.  But when you are 2-14 you get Bruce Smith

Yep, but I think Loafs will match.

Fine by me.  I'd love for them to be paying him $4M more than Jack every year for a decade.   Carter Hutton makes under $3 and Dahlin for the next 2 years is about $1M.

It's way better to blow it up completely than be mediocre.  WAY, WAY better.  Imma cheer for the Patriots to be between 7-9 and 9-7 every year until I die.
