Think the Bills did a terrific job of staying BPA and looking at where the board left them value and not reaching for need. Everyone knows they need depth at receiver and corner but the talent worthy of a day two pick had kind of hollowed out there. Staying on point and taking Harrison Phillips was a win. Other than poor old Maurice Hurst who it looks like might not get drafted (though if he is there in the 7th you absolutely take him) he was the BPA by my board. It all comes down to how highly you value his production and his high-effort style of play. Those traits are valuable, but they don’t make an elite prospect on their own. Phillips’ lack of high-end athletic ability makes him a limited player in the NFL, and I’m not sure that I see him as anything more than an average NFL starter. A team could certainly benefit from adding a player like Phillips in the Day 2 range, as he’s ready to start right away on base packages and would provide valuable depth to the defensive line. I just don’t understand the first round hype that Phillips has been getting, as he’s clearly a prospect with fairly limited upside—particularly as a pass rusher. May not be a plus athlete, but the kid is a football player. I don't see Kyle's ridiculous first step, but I think HP will be much more stout. I love Stanford guys, true student athletes. Minus is possibly the most important pick in Bills’ history, I love our draft. And that is what worries me about having a defensive head coach be so involved with personnel.
