Oh, so we can't say he is on the team because of what he does best?

Sounds reasonable

Has he ever even made a st tackle in a bills uniform?

In a vacuum I'm fine with that approach - I've said here repeatedly that Teams are low-hanging fruit that can win you an extra 2-3 games every year. If they weren't needlessly expelling young talented players, this team might actually have a shot...

Interestingly Marrone's 2014 9-7 team (where the STs were very good) committed a lot of resources to the third phase. So there is something in that.

I don't even recognize this team anymore.

And thats a bad thing?

I think beane/mad have gone way too far favoring versatility/st. At the end of the day you need skill at skill positions

Ask Nick Saban if ST are important.

Ask Nick Saban if ST are important.

Michael Lombardi said on the Cowherd show the other week he thinks they are the key to beating the Patriots. Not sure I'd go that far but Saban certainly comes from that Belichick school of prioritise them because they are hidden yards that others ignore.

I'm kind of with Coach Tuesday. If you have talented starting lineups and decent frontline depth both sides of the ball and you want to commit your last 8 or 10 roster spots more to ST guys that is not an issue for me. I just think having that many when it leaves, for example, the linebacker and wide receiver depth so thin is a little odd.

Actually someone just asked Saban about special teams on the 10th of August. Pretty boring response. What are we supposed to get from it?

"I think we have work to do there, I really do, Saban said. I think the timing of what were doing, not only with the specialists but also with the other special teams players, whether its operation time, whether its blocking schemes, all these things were working really hard on."

That's hardly proof that there's something to that. You could argue we would've been better if not handcuffed by the huge investment there. it was a constant conversation that we were taking away from our other units for this.

Given the complete lack of kick returns, and lack of special talent needed for the ft unit outside ofkicker... where do those 8 guys contribute? Punt returns and coverage? Which averages out to about 2 plays each direction per game?

Invest in good kickers and a competent coach and let the rest sort itself out.

I feel like they have dedicated a LOT of their 53 spots to special teamers.

Brandon Tate

Taiwan Jones

Kaelin Clay

Deon Lacey

Colt Anderson

(plus the 3 specialists obviously)

That is EIGHT of the 53 spots given over to people who are primarily here for their special teams capability. And that is without including the likes of Mike Tolbert, Andre Holmes and Tanner Vallejo who are dual purpose line of scrimmage / ST options.

I don't agree with this.

Kaelin Clay was brought here to play WR. That's why Philly Brown was released.

Taiwan Jones showed that he can be used as a running back in certain packages after averaging 6.64 yards per carry in the offseason - the Jonathan Williams release is further proof.

After Deon Lacey was claimed, Gerald Hodges was released which likely shows they believe Lacey can fill in as Preston Brown's backup at MLB.

When healthy, Colt Anderson is the backup free safety.

Really? He has shown no ability yet to do it.

Most of which came on ONE run against Detroit's cuts the other night. 44 career attempts for 4.2 yards aged 29 suggests he ain't much of a running back.

Certainly possible but he has never made an NFL team before and now he is here to be our main backup at a position McDermott says is the QB of the defense?

Just cut..... for another guy who can play teams.

The majority of focus has been on the Jon Williams cut. In terms of actual impact, I think Hodges was an equal, if not greater, surprise. The guy was all over the field and looked like a key cog in the defense this season.

Also, Gunner, you weren't one of the posters I was speaking about who quit on the team. Scott Law was the most recent, but multiple posters have been stating "not watching games this year " and "done with this team" over the past months. I appreciate posters who express their opinions on the team and the moves made by the HO. I don't understand those that post despite openly quitting on the team.

I don't think it's that black and white. I gave up Sunday Ticket this year and my family gave up our season tickets. I'll still casually watch some of the games but I'm not going out of my way to invest my time or money into the team this year. I'll post less frequently as well. That doesn't mean I've "quit on the team." It seems to me the team "quit on its fans" when it waited until a few days after season ticket sales had ended to trade its best young player for a bag of beans. The roster they've assembled is old and plodding. They've shipped away talented young players at their lowest values for very little in return. They say they're not tanking - let's be honest, it's even more terrifying if they're serious about that. They're either lying or they're incompetent. If you want to spend your money on the product this year so that you can qualify for the Fan of the Year award that doesn't exist, be my guest. But don't judge the rest of us for making different decisions. (And by the way, ScottLaw didn't quit on the Bills - he's always like this.)

Nope. Bad personnel decision.

@PSchrags

Johnathan Williams release has no injury/suspension/anything issues. An NFL transaction. Didn't make the 53. Nothing nefarious there.

I know, I saw that - I'm not convinced.

No worries Milton. I didn't think you were I was just explaining where I am at. I don't understand the people who let sports really drag them down... this is the fun bit of life guys.... enjoy it... the wins will be all the sweeter when they come.

@MatthewFairburn

McDermott said the backup running back job will be "by committee" and said all three backs bring something different to the table. He also insisted the decision to release Williams had nothing to do with anything off the field.

"Absolutely not," McDermott said. "Jonathan is a great young man. He did everything we asked. There's none whatsoever in that regard. He did a fine job."

A lot of people thought Clay did enough to earn a spot. Just came down to a numbers game.

I'm good with the trade.

he replaced Colt Anderson - but it sure Yates will be gone as soon as they can get him or TT out of protocol

He didn't replace Colt. They just needed a spot and couldn't release Yates yet.

Wouldn't be surprised if they signed Colt back up when Yates is out of protocol.
