Let's take a second to appreciate James Cook

This is going to prolong Josh's career and prolong the bills window... Having this kid who's going to be on a tear for the next 3 or 4 years 

 

His vision and speed and even finishing power all shines every Sunday... He runs effortlessly, he makes people miss in a phone booth.. he's knocking helmets off 

 

James Cook like Thurman is going to run us into the Super bowl powered behind this offensive line captained by Josh Allen

 

He's playing like an all pro

The question is whether we should keep running him at this pace, and whether his body will hold up under this strain.

 

And whether he can in fact hold up at a pace like this for three or four more years. His brother couldn't, and he is a bigger stronger dude, though with a more bruising style.

 

In any case, the contract they gave James looks like a very good one, even with signing him a year early, which usually implies the team gets a discount.

 

I'm hoping they ease his workload a bit, getting him out of games early whenever possible. Ty Johnson looked pretty good against the Chiefs, maybe if Ray and Ty start to look as solid as they did last year we can do that more.

 

Thurman was an absolute work horse, but he was never really quite as good after those first five years. And Thurman was 15 pounds heavier than James is.

Health is obviously a consideration with every player in the league. For a back mind you James doesn't take that many big hits. He is a different style of runner to his brother. The bigger risk is him getting his ankle rolled up on etc which he did a bit Sunday and looked gimpy for a series or two afterwards. That can happen to anyone at any time. The him wearing down.... I worry less about that.

His college career, while solid, didnt really showcase his talents like other stud RBs. He finished his senior year 2nd on the team with 728 yards. The talent was there in spurts, but it really wasnt until his 2nd or 3rd yr in the NFL that he broke out and became the threat that he is today. 

 

Good job by Beane to take him in the 2nd, then build a running game around him, and then resign him. He's definitely worth it.

Come on now McKellar wasn't a guy that could put up 100 yards receiving. He was more of a redzone TD magnet. Shakir is reminiscent of Reed in both play from the slot. Yet Shakir is more jittery. The difference is the current Bills can score in long sustaining drives. See that 8 minute masterpiece we saw against the Chiefs to open the game. Had Kelly and co done that more we could have easily beat the Giants in Super Bowl XXV.

And I think Beane drafted him thinking he'd be a good receiving back and offer some pop in the run game. He has surprised even them I suspect. 

 

I am not trying to be smart after the event but there were people before that draft saying the Bills should take Breece Hall in the first and I said I think there is so little between them I'd rather take Cook in the second. It is now undeniably the case that Cook is a better back than Hall.

From draft day I said get him which can be found in my comment history.  He had flashes at UGA similar to Jordan in college.  Most of his runs then were outside.  This OL can give him the 2 foot holes for .5 second, then he does the rest.  He’s much stronger man now.  The training staff gets some credit, and the coaches.  During the playoffs, we’ll see more catches I bet.

The pundits are declaring Jonathan Taylor as this year’s clear MVP.  Cook has more YPG, same average per carry and would match him in touchdowns if Allen wasn’t vulturing them.  Is Cook an MVP candidate?

I've been stumping for Cook ever since he was drafted.  He excited me as a draft pick then, and he's become everything and more to this offense.  I've called him "this team's Thurman" many times and it is a perfect parallel.

Cook is doing it with the threat of Allen throwing or running on the field.  Taylor is doing it with...  Daniel Jones?  Cook is doing it in the #1 offense over the last 5 years.

 

Allen is also an MVP candidate.  There is no scenario where a RB has a shot at MVP when on the same team as a QB candidate (CMC should have won and didn't for this reason).

 

Cook has been playing terrific, I wouldn't want anyone else here, and we'd be worse without him.  However, it is entirely fair (and accurate from my viewpoint) for an external observer to say that Taylor means more to the Colts than Cook means to the Bills this year.

Leads the NFL in YPG, is only 28 yards off the lead with Taylor having played an extra game.  Once Indy goes on their bye, Cook should be the NFL's leading rusher.
