I am watching the All-22 right now. We lost this game because of turnovers and penalties. I've vented at the refs in the other thread, but watching the Bills first drive again really brought home the fact that if that first fumble doesn't happen the Bills probably score a TD there. They couldn't stop us. Then, we got on the wrong side of a field position exchange. Keon's fumble was really bad. He wasn't even hit. Every time we got rolling in the first half after that, there would be a ticky-tack holding or illegal formation call to break up drives. They were all penalties, but the Pats were holding all night and they didn't call a single one. I just keep getting more and more angry every time I see these uncalled holds that were much more obvious than McGovern's hold with 5 minutes left in the second quarter that killed a drive that could have resulted in a Bills double dip. They say there is offensive holding in every play in every football game, but for some reason they decided that one team could magically block all night without holding.

But to answer the question, the Bills need to clean up the illegal formation BS. Get lined up correctly within the letter of the law. They want to throw that flag, so don't give them the option. Also, stop turning the ball over. Maybe don't run a jet sweep with a TE with bad hands?

But in terms of personnel? They need a WR who can get open even if the defense takes the pass away. Not just a fast guy, but someone who can make guys fall down with route running. But I cannot identify a team that will be out of contention and doesn't have a young QB that they are developing. Pretty much every NFL team could make the playoffs or is in the QB development cycle. The few examples are either in the division or don't have anyone the Bills would want. This had to be done in the offseason, but this is made almost impossible because we demand that our WR corps be diva-free. Guess what? Almost all elite boundary receivers are huge divas. So I think we're kind of stuck.

As an example, watch this Ja'Maar Chase TD from yesterday. Yeah, he's fast. But he beats his man with route running, https://www.bengals.com/video/ja-marr-chase-jake-browning-highlights-64-yard-touchdown-bengals-lions-week-5-2025

Yeah imagine having Josh Allen at QB and play ball control offense vs Spencer f'n Rattler, he who was 0-9 as a starter going into our matchup.

Sometimes you can just punch down vs an inferior opponent and smoke them.

My issue with the ball control stuff has always been that if you end up with long drives that ultimately break down or end in a FG (or missed FG) you've taken a lot of time off the clock and essentially done the job of the opposing offense for them, i.e. reduced the amount of opportunities Josh Allen gets.

It's not like the old days when it was more effective. Offenses can score so quickly now that you can quickly find yourself in a hole without much time left on the clock, and when your defense can't get stops on 3rd down it becomes even worse

I’d like Josh to get over his Diggs hang up. He was pressing last night and making stupid decisions. He was directly responsible for 17-21 points not going on the board for us. 1) A very easy read to give Ty Johnson the ball on the read option for a likely TD. He pre determined he was keeping the ball himself. 2) Bailed out of a huge clean pocket for no reason and missed a WIDE OPEN Samuel downfield for an easy TD 3) That interception was a horrific decision and I got the feeling he was fed up and was going to rip one in there.

Was Josh the main problem? Nope. Turnovers and offensive penalties were the main issue. Even with Josh’s bad decisions we’d have won easily without the TOs and constant penalties.

I see too many defects with this defense to think we are going to be Super Bowl bound. I stated in an earlier thread I’d wait until the reinforcements showed up, and I’m still trying to cling to that, but it’s tough. 1) At least Groot made an appearance for once 2) Rapp is horrible, slow, and a liability 3) Milano is good but made of glass 4) Thompson needs to start 5) Tre is washed 6) Johnson looks washed 7) DTs suck until Ed comes back, Jones was ok.

Those are too many issues to fix in one season. I hope I’m wrong, maybe this was just that stinker game we play every year and they are going to get much better as the season progresses. They did have a solid pass rush in the first half but the second half that evaporated and Maye just shredded the D constantly rolling to his right.

- Get some help for Bobby Babich, we have some athletes but they are not in good position and the in-game schemes are off on 3rd and medium+

- Change this season's offensive philosophy.  Stop playing such conservative football in the first half of games. When you have Josh Allen and deficiencies on the back end of your defense, building a nice lead with some up-tempo offence will get you the #1 seed.  These guys are holding back and running the offense like we have Joe Flacco at QB.  Check the film from the previous few seasons on how they rolled teams in the first half.

- Demote Ray Davis and promote the Gore Jr. kid.  If nothing else, to send a message for a week or two.  Gotta give James Cook fewer touches without losing massive amounts of productivity.

- May need to trade draft assets for a legit downfield threat, these outside WR's are not championship caliber guys.

Lack of receiver ability to separate and go deep was bound to catch up with them. Coleman might be a bust. I was yelling at my TV at draft time to pick McConkey. We hand KC an offensive weapon and we take a slow, jump ball guy. Beane BLEW it!!!!

Did you watch the all 22 yet to confirm this?  I don’t like to comment on the separation unless I’ve watched the all-22.  The tv camera doesn’t tell the whole story.  My buddy said he saw guys open (didn’t specify if any were deep) while Josh was navigating in the pocket prematurely on several occasion, although I didn’t see it with my own eyes

I agree with your buddy on guys getting open at times down field, and was at the game. But more to the point, what @Simon said was accurate. The PATS would not come out of 2 high shell almost all night long. So its not not all of one thing or another... There's some separation issues on the outside AND there's some coverage dictating it being dangerous to go over the top.

And the fact that Brady not only gave up on the run, but didn’t throw more than 1 pass to James out of the backfield (2 high killer) is coaching malpractice.

Thank you.

That was what it looked like on TV but you can never be 100% sure with limited broadcast angles and their burgeoning propensity to forego replays and instead opt for the human drama of a view up a coach's or QB's nostrils.
