I mean, ex-Panther, edge rusher, I've heard of him.  What more do you need?

All jokes aside, I'd bring him in as a camp body.  Why not?

This guy made a fortune based largely upon a play in college where he wasn’t even blocked.

So did I, but then again blocking was greatly discouraged in architecture school. 😉

This might be the end for him. Hasn't been an impact player in years.

Pass.

Still living off that college clip.

5.5 sacks and 46 tackles last year
9.5 sacks and 43 tackles in 2023

EDIT: Forgot Hoecht is on the team.  Oh well!

Because of the Hoecht thing I would not mind him as a hired gun for six weeks on a minimum salary.

But I am curious how much longer they will wait before they sign Shaq Thompson as a depth linebacker. You know they want to.

Get R Done...

In all seriousness the Bills have a very crowded D-line room and they don't need a mercenary. Bosa is the front line pass rush mercenary Hoecht is on a 3 year deal and is that moveable chess piece, Groot and AJE are there, and they have Jackson drafted fairly high this year and Solomon as a back end prospect. That's 6 DE's and no need for a back end veteran depth. Simply put the Bills have 6 solid DE's there.

He's had 9+ sacks 4x in his career, i'm sure someone gives him another contract before he's sitting on a practice squad.

He's 32 older but not ancient, he's coming off a season where he had 5.5 sacks in 14 games in what I imagine was a more limited role and he's known to be an effective edge setter. I am sure there's a team out there similar to the Bills in 2023 who missed out on DE's in the draft and signed Leonard Floyd to get some pass rush pop for a year rental. I am sure there is a team that needs a boost at the DE spot. Not only is Clowney not coming off a bad season in 2024 but he's just a year removed from a 9.5 sack season in 2023. He's gonna get a modest sized one year deal unless there's a medical I am unaware of.

Yes and the same with Yannick Ngakoue.

I cant wait til they both retire. Just so we're spared the same threads year after year after year.

There may have been a time where i could've been on board with bringing them in, but unless its for vet minimum, i'd sooner play the new kids on the block.

I'm a hard pass.

Clowney seems to me to be on a downward trajectory. He's past his real or imagined peak. Having him on your team is betting that you'll get a year out of him before the decline makes him not good enough.  I also think his strength is his creativity, and McDermott's style is to encourage playing within the system and discourage independent decision making.

I think betting on Bosa is a little different. Bosa has shown that he can be consistently valuable, game after game. The question with him is whether injuries have just made him less effective. The Bosa bet is more similar to the Miller bet.  Miller had plateaued at a good place - he wasn't at his peak but he wasn't declining. And that's what the Bills got, until he got injured.  They're hoping they get that from Bosa, too.
