I’ll never understand teams that finally have good receivers and then trade them away

This dude staying there another year with bad QB's but now sliding down the depth chart? NFW that works.  He's 1,000% unextendable, and probably the most toxic locker room guy thats active in the NFL right now!

Good deal for both teams, and the player. Cowboys get a 1 year preview to see if he can be contented with winning and a real QB.  They g2 hope the locker room stuff was just a bad fit (doubtful).

Most likely scenario IMO is he keeps it together in a contract year, on a competitive team, and he helps them push hard this season.  Then he walks. But maybe he clicks with the guys there and matures.

Pick def needed a locker room change, heres his only chance to show hes worth being paid.

Keeping it together for 12mos should not be that difficult for a $50m talent... if he cant do it this year, he goes full Dionte.  Waiver wire fodder, and a quick NFL exit

Because he’s on the final year of his deal and they don’t want him in their locker room because he’s an idiot.  If you don’t understand still, 🤷🏻‍♂️

Counter point, what if Rodgers hated him and wants his own guys there, like he does everywhere?  This is just clearing space for Lazard.  I’m not saying that’s it, but if Pitt is willing to go all in on Metcalf to pair with Pickens, but then after the draft trades Pickens, I suspect this is more like a Diggs move.  He’s been a problem since day one and they can still get something of value for him, might actually be addition by subtraction.

Ha, we are on the same page.

Bro, I dont think the Steelers FO is this dumb.  We saw this EXACT scenario play out with Jets.  Complete team minus the QB (admittedly tough spot to plug).  Jets went full "I'll give $10 tmrw for $1 today".

They had a young group of killers.  Not only did Rodgers help them implode on the field, they detonated what should've been an extended window of contending.  Now all those rookies from their huge draft are coming up on needing contracts, they'll lose half them, and they didnt even walk away with a WildCard to show for it.

Im not trading an extended 4-5 year window, for 1 serious run (even if it was guaranteed by a Genie) PERIOD. But im especially not making that trade to acquire a guy with a mangled body & mind, thats going to result in 9 & 8 season and an IR trip anyways.  I guess they are competition so i should be rooting for it to happen, but damn thatd be a serious implication on Steelers FO being completely out of touch.

Its basically:

Raw dog and fall in love with a diseased stripper, for one night

vs

Love your wife

I can understand one seeming excited, but man, this is an easy proposition to say no to

I'm confused about this for Pittsburgh. You traded a 2nd for Metcalf and now take a 3rd for Pickens. Is this really going to be a big enough difference? Unless there's something else coming, I have a hard time understanding it.

Don’t discount the fact of Pickens being a complete Asshat.  Rodgers or not, this may well be more of a reflection on the person than the player.  He’s talented, but Dionte Johnson talked himself off the team and that didn’t play out too well.  What’s a guy that disappeared more than Houdini going to offer?  His biggest impacts were 15 yard penalties last year.  I’m surprised they didn’t make the move before the draft, but whatever.

OMG WHY WOULDN'T WE DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Pittsburgh's diva receivers ALWAYS do well after they leave.

Antonio Brown.

Did I miss all of the other Pitt WR's that didn't do well that would make acquiring a Pitt WR a cautionary tale?

Plaxico Burress immediately put up 1250 for the Giants and went on to catch the game winning TD to beat the undefeated Patriots in the SB.

Emmanuel Sanders played tremendous in Denver.

Mike Wallace had four 800-1,000 yard seasons after he left Pittsburgh.

I realize Pickens has been “troublesome” to some extent, but what in the actual feck is PIttsburgh doing?  Is this a sign of a full on tank for the QB class of 2026?

My quick two cents is that Rodgers is hanging it up and/or not coming to Pitt and they have word.

No way they trade Pickens if they get one more bite at the apple with Rodgers/Pickens

Hmmmm... it's possible that Rodgers doesn't want to play with Pickens. For one thing they have to make room for Allen Lazard. It's also possible that the Steelers reached the "Diggs Point" with Pickens.

Probably making room for Jordy Nelson on the roster

That's as legit a statement in this topic as any.

In the end I think Pitt was done with Pickens routine... maybe much like we were done with Diggs routine...  and felt that this was addition by subtraction... at least Diggs gives you a few years on a new team before he becomes malcontent...  with Pickens I am just not sure how he will react... he could really get it together and act like a pro or he could go to the lights of Dallas and get worse...

Agreed.

If Rodgers decides to flake out, they can still pivot to Kirk Cousins.

To be fair his issues have never been about actual football. They've been everything else.

Not true. If Pickens doesn't get the ball he stops playing. Stops blocking, doesn't chase fumbles... and he also loses composure and takes stupid penalties.

That's all actual football.

Or they wanted to make room for Randall Cobb.

Take the non- head cases off the list: Sanders and Wallace

Add: Diontae Johnson and Martavius Bryant

I'd add Plaxico didn't shake up the locker room, like Brown or Pickens.

Steelers find talent, gotta give them thag, but they're the "all about me" WRs.  Growing list recently.

And their pick from Michigan LY, was just flat out lazy putting in the mental work.

I think it's more likely that Diontae Johnson and Martavis Bryant were just washing out.

Both had already been providing diminishing returns with Pittsburgh and were passing that 26 year old male physical peak age where the players who aren't taking care of their bodies start declining suddenly.

Pickens is 24.   Johnson and Bryant were at their peaks at that age.

You know what WR teams really should avoid?  Former Buffalo Bills.

Bob Woods is the only one of like 20 I can remember that didn't disappoint or just continue to suck elsewhere.

That goes back to your point that Pittsburgh finds WR talent.    Buffalo does not.

I don't understand the Steelers direction. Are they going all in our blowing things up?

Neither. They are run incompetently and have been for quite awhile now. As long as Tomlin gets to go 9-8 and keep his silly .500 record intact while getting smashed by 30 in the wild card, everything is good.
