DaQuan Jones: Best Beane free agent signing in years

DaQuan Jones has been an absolute beast this year, and I just wanted to take a moment to recognize it.

Against the run. Against the pass. Taking on double teams. Shedding blocks.

He has been the one consistently healthy Bills defensive tackle this year, and he's also been the best DT on the team.

The ripple effect of Jones' great play has also helped the defensive ends have greater success, and has allowed Edmunds and Milano to flow to the ball more freely.

An absolute homerun signing. Unlike in the case of Star Lotulelei, who was controversial for all of his years here, I think every Bills fan can agree that DaQuan Jones has been a home run signing by Brandon Beane. Arguably his best free agent signing of the past few years.

Very, very glad this man is a Buffalo Bill.

Our DT rotation, once Phillips comes back, may be the best in the Playoffs.

Only thing missing are some of the consistent impact plays a single guy like Donald, Quinnen & Chris Jones provide.

For the all the talk about Von and the young pass rushers on the outside, the DT room Beane has built is a monster.

I just thought about him last night when I was thinking about our 2023 salary cap.

I was wondering if it was possible that Beane extends him thus offseason to lower his 2023 cap hit and secure him a little longer - e.g. 2 years extension, which would essentially be 1 year extension with possible out after 2024.

I think it is fairly likely.

Logic, I haven’t looke beyond your post, but at a quick glance couldn’t agree more.  The overall upgrade for the defensive line has been incredible.  Jones, Settle, Jordan Phillips, Von, Shaq and the affect Avon has had on AJ, GROOT, and Boogie has been a miraculous change for the positive.

They’ve hid some of the shortcomings of our best strength in DBacks with all the injuries.

It is incredible we’ll have almost all of them barring more injuries for the playoffs.  You made a great point that Milano and Tremaine have shined even more with this help.

The big thing is us getting as many of not all resigned for next year.  I’m so happy the future is so bright, we have to wear shades.

Buscaglia agrees. From his All-22 yesterday:

Quote

Outside of his one late-game pressure and a recovered fumble, the starting defensive tackle may have gone under the radar. But he was, without question, one of the best players on the field Sunday. He was outstanding at the line holding his ground against a double team, and when given a one-on-one chance to disrupt the backfield, he was continually in a position to help make a play. His efforts helped force many tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage against the Jets’ ground game. He also added a pair of key pressures for a well-rounded game, despite the limitations of pass rushing from the one-technique position. And without Ed Oliver for most of the final two drives and Jordan Phillips the entire game, Jones had to become an every-snap player at a position the Bills usually rotate heavily. Jones had to play on 20 of the Bills’ final 21 defensive snaps in the fourth quarter. His overall importance to the team was critical to its success.

Jones has been having games like these the entire season, under the radar but also unequivocally good. While the Bills have dealt with multiple injuries to the position all season, Jones has been healthy, available and playing a high snap percentage every time they needed him. Outside of the first Jets game, the run defense has also been excellent for most of the season, and Jones has played a massive role in its success. And unlike Star Lotulelei and Harrison Phillips, Jones’ one-technique predecessors in Buffalo, Jones provides a more consistent pass rush. He won’t get a lot of credit nationally for being the impact signing that he has been in 2022. But given Von Miller’s season-ending injury, you can make a compelling argument that he has become the Bills’ most crucial free-agent acquisition from the 2022 offseason.

Bowers has been excellent this year and leads DLinmen this season(with 60%) in snap count.

But it's guys like Bowers who are a luxury on this team and, as a 1T, the question is he worth it at 8.5M for a cap hit next season?  Especially when you consider they have upgrades across the offense to make for 2023 and less cap room to work with now that Josh's contract is kicking in.   The cap will change, but they are almost 9M over in 2023 if the cap is 231M and have 2023 contracts of 107M in defensive players.

The best teams in the NFL do not maintain an 8-9 man DL and Buffalo has 8 under contract for next season at almost 47M.  At some point they'll need to consider how much spending on defense in total inhibits their ability to surround Josh with better talent.

Can't argue with this one.

Beane has whiffed on a lot of other crucial FA signings in recent years but I'll go as far to say that Jones was as big a FA addition as Von Miller, if not bigger in the grand scheme of things in terms of what he's offered this unit in terms of run defense and opening things up for the LB's.

A true anti- star loutelie in every sense of the word.

I'm not sure who Bowers is.

DaQuan Jones has been excellent, though. Worth every penny. Definitely NOT a luxury. A crucial piece of the defense.

Da'quan Bowers was a draft prospect in the 2011 draft that a lot of people wanted us to get. Iirc he had knee issues, dropped to the second round to maybe Bucs and was out of league pretty quick
