Buffalo Sabres and NHL 2021-2022

Hooray, they are just above rock bottom!!!

The first step to respectability is getting out of rock bottom. The Sabres can't just buy their way out with free agents. They have to develop their picks. It takes time. Bringing up the last ten years doesn't make things go faster now.

Absolutely WRONG! Buffalo is a hockey town and belongs in the NHL. Any  franchise we let leave is gone forever.

I have watched every single second of Sabres hockey this year, and pretty much every year. If all you do is check the scores and standings it's easy to think they are a basket case.

But actually they are where the Bills were in 2018. They blew up the old core and are cultivating a new one. They are a very young team and players that need to develop.

But I can tell you this team is already much better than the s##t show they were last year under Krueger. In many games they are playing well only to screw up in their end and give up a goal.

Maybe they are inching towards having a fringe playoff roster in a couple years.........but it's a bit difficult to envision a cup contender coming out of this in 2024 (as the Bills became a SB contender in 2020).

Are the Lightning, Panthers and Leafs suddenly getting much worse while the Sabres somehow vault to the top without star power?    Are the Sabres even ahead of the Senators in their re-builds?

And that's just their own division.

To me,  your optimism is like that of a NY Jets fan who thinks that their current trajectory places them atop the AFC East in 2024.

No context.

10 years ago is a better starting point to describe the current Sabres to the Bills.

The current Sabres are about where the 2013 Bills were...........the Buddy Nix era..........it will take some more losing and coaching and GM changes.........another iteration of a tear down in 3-4 years.........and nobody on the current roster will probably be with the team when they get into cup contention again in 2030.

If everything goes right this time, that is. 😉

Tax write off for Pegula with Sabres

If the Sabres had legitimate goaltending they’d probably be a fringe playoff team right now.  They have a ways to go, but goaltending has absolutely held them back — it’s horrid.

If not the defense it’s the wingers.

Goaltending was actually pretty solid to start the season, then we had some injury problems and it was much more up and down.

We are nowhere close to a fringe playoff team however, even if we had Dom in his prime.

Among many other problems, we are dead last (league wide) in face-off wins.

Except that the Bills are being run by a real NFL GM while the Sabres are being run by an ex-waitress.

I know fans like to blame Kim Pegula because she’s the team president but I’ve never seen any evidence that Kim is involved in making any hockey decisions.

Terry, on the other hand, seems very involved in the hockey ops.

He’s the one that sits in every scouting + free agent meeting and gives his opinion.

I think Terry is a bigger issue than Kim. But Both just need to stay out of the decision making for the Sabres IMO.

Boy, it’s a good thing Botterill just willingly gave up this kid’s draft rights instead of signing him to an entry level deal, huh? All t would’ve cost was a contract spot.

Not like we need good players we drafted or anything. 😡🤬

Botterill was pretty terrible. But part of the issue is also all the turnover in the front office and scouting staff.

Heard this at the home opener tailgate from a member of the Associated Press that covers the Bills and Sabres.

Just say John Wawrow.

The Sabres are run by Kevin Adams and Jason Karmanos.

The Sabres need a goalie like the Bills needed a QB.

They actually need to learn how to play in their end. How to defend and how to leave the zone without turning the puck over.

I'm asking because I have no idea. In a potential Sabres sale are there or can there be safeguards put in place that a franchise existing as a decade long dumpster fire with abysmal attendance wouldn't simply be moved to a more attractive market as part of the sale?

I'm sure the Pegulas would do everything they can to keep the Sabres in town as part of a sale, I just don't know how realistic that will be.

It was reported that Tom Golisano put a no-move provision in the sale of the Sabres.

https://www.espn.com/nhl/news/story?id=6087856

not sure if that applies to future owners too, but if not I don’t see why the Pegulas couldn’t make it a provision of the sale like Golisano did.

I also don’t know if Gary Bettman would let the Sabres leave Buffalo anyway.

Say what you want about him but he shows true loyalty to NHL markets. He’s already fought for the Sabres to stay in Buffalo. If not for him they would’ve been relocated after the bankruptcy (I was pissed when Buffalo fans booed him at the 2015 draft in Buffalo). He won’t even allow the Coyotes to leave Arizona despite their attendance issues and not having an NHL arena to play in starting next season. They’ll be playing in a 2000 seat state college arena.

But Terry has experience as a (non skating) hockey coach.

The best thing Pegula could do is being just the bills owner

There is maybe one destination the Sabres could move to that would be better than Buffalo.

That's Quebec.

There is almost 0 chance that this team moves.

im pretty sure is he a real estate developer in buffalo

Per wikipedia he is from Brooklyn and he and his brothers founded "Nobody Beats the Wiz" electronics store.

Sold his share before that store tanked in the 90's and made a killing in Washington DC area real estate for a couple decades.

Invested HEAVILY in Buffalo area real estate in recent years.

I've had a couple Kleins in my time.  Beautiful craftsmanship on each and every one.

That said, my old Klein Mantra could be absolutely terrifying on downhills.  That rear suspension would get working and in no time, it was like you were riding a pogo stick down the mountain.  N'yah!

There were also episodes where Jerry had a Cannondale hanging up instead of the Klein.

Ive had 4 different Kleins.  The first one- I won $5000 blackjack in the 1990s, first thing in am I went down and bought a Klein Attitude fully loaded.  It has well over 100,000 miles and my favorite.  I broke every single part on that bike (have you ever broken a bottom bracket?  Bike mechanics were awed I snapped a RaceFace BB)and replaced with top of the line parts.  That Klein has fallen off my buddies bike rack 55 mph, its dinged up, the paint is worn off mostly, thats still my favorite.

I had a Mantra, and listed it on craigslist.  Some dude says "are you by Groton airport?"(I was at that time).  Long story short, the guy flies in on two seater plane, with his buddy.  He flew in to pick up Klein lol.  So he was telling his buddy how special that bike was, and all the updates he was going to do, he was going to paint, he had big plans for it

I had a klein attitude I built myself, I sold for $1500- some scumbag said he never receieved it.   His mother said he did. That shady dude got me and my perfect rating thrown off ebay.  I had another Klein custom Attitude race bike.  Some scumbag stole it from our garage.  I suspect the painters

I digress.  Klein F-ing rocks!

The Mantra is such a cool looking bike, but your pogo downhill was it's fatal flaw.

But I concur the craftsmanship and geometry on Klein's is stellar.  Klein's eat up hills.

I have a Klein pulse pro I converted to single speed, 48 tooth big chain ring, smallest little chain ring- it's a speed machine!

he has been buying up all sorts of property in Buffalo.

and he says he loves a challenge… 😂

But he has nowhere near the net worth of Pegula ($150 million). I’d be very very nervous that we’d be headed back to the Golisano days of extreme penny pinching where the profit margin was always the #1 concern.

Personally, I don’t know that I want the Pegulas to sell.

not sure I buy this rumor anyway. It’s from some random Buffalo fan Twitter account with like 100 followers. There has been a lot of smoke about a sale though.
