More to the point, my original post said that if we had instituted a national mask policy early on we would have gotten it under control. I don't think the data I'm showing does a good enough job of showing that. This data shows how we're able to get an ongoing outbreak under control. And in one sense you're obviously right - at this point it is a little too late for one policy to end the pandemic. These things needed to be done before it turned into an outbreak. If states can lower their new case rate by an average of 25% with one simple policy, imagine what we could have done if we had instituted that policy well before we had thousands of new cases per day. Truly sad stuff. Just so ya know: I HATE Trump. But I care about truth. What untruth? That he called the iris a "hoax"? So what? That bit certainly did not and has not "stoked fear"----it's the everything he has said and done SINCE that utterance that has stoked fear that he doesn't really care about the pandemic, wishes it would just go away so he can rally in front of those adoring voters who could not find China on a globe..AND that the only motivation he has left until the election is NOT becoming his party's Jimmy Carter. That he's a xenophobe? Of course he is--and proudly so. Racist too. In fact, he scored a daily double when he suggested that 4 (female, of course) Members of Congress to "go back to" "the crime infested places from which they came". What "stokes fear" is not "the media" broadcasting this man's uninhibited flight of ideas; it's knowing your President is a dangerous combination of unlimited ego, extremely limited intelligence and, now, frank desperation. That "hoax" comment was a Freudian slip--it scared no one. I have absolutely no doubt, based on all of his other contemporaneous statements, the he came to believe a large part of the pandemic was a hoax brewed up by his political enemies and a pliant press. He believes that to this day.

NYC fixed their massive infection rate with strict enforcement and people following guidelines. Now they are ordering quarantine for visitors or returning residents from 32 states. It worked. Where "the spread continues", they have not...and at least one governor simply calls becoming the countries epicenter "a blip", and another is suing to strike down a mandatory mask rule imposed by the mayor of the state's largest city. These strategies by these "leaders" has given those citizens the inevitable and predictable results they are suffering through now. NYC has so many infections it has a good base of resistant citizens. The more it spreads eventually the rate slows. And in the end the goal was a few weeks to slow the spread to not overwhelm the hospitals not imprison a population for 6 months or a year. There are more deaths from suicide and drug overdoses happening now due to the excessive measures. There are just as many studies that show masks are ineffective as there are ones that say they help. The crappy cloth ones that most people are using do very little, may even hurt with the false sense of security given. You know, for a guy that claims this isn't about "politics," you really haven't shut up about it. The number or lies he has said about this situation are countless. Here are some really nice ones.... The coronavirus would weaken “when we get into April, in the warmer weather—that has a very negative effect on that, and that type of a virus.” The outbreak would be temporary: “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle—it will disappear.” “I’ve always known this is a real—this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic … I’ve always viewed it as very serious.” “We now have the lowest Fatality (Mortality) Rate in the World.” “The Obama administration made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we’re doing,” “Anybody that needs a test, gets a test. We—they’re there. They have the tests. And the tests are beautiful” and “If somebody wants to be tested right now, they’ll be able to be tested.” In an Oval Office address, Trump said that private-health-insurance companies had “agreed to waive all co-payments for coronavirus treatments, extend insurance coverage to these treatments, and to prevent surprise medical billing.” America has “developed a testing capacity unmatched and unrivaled anywhere in the world, and it’s not even close.” “Everybody thought I was wrong” about implementing restrictions on travelers from China, and “most people felt they should not close it down—that we shouldn’t close down to China.” “If an American is coming back or anybody is coming back, we’re testing,” Trump said. “We have a tremendous testing setup where people coming in have to be tested … We’re not putting them on planes if it shows positive, but if they do come here, we’re quarantining.” This kind of pandemic “was something nobody thought could happen … Nobody would have ever thought a thing like this could have happened.” Edited July 28, 2020 by nedboy7

Mayo and Hopkins both estimate it would take 70% for COVID—and that’s assuming infection produces immunity, which is NOT known for certain. Big Blitz
Or this: The psychological impact of quarantine and how to reduce it: rapid review of the evidence Longer quarantine is associated with poorer psychological outcomes, perhaps unsurprisingly, as it stands to reason that the stressors reported by participants could have more of an effect the longer they were experienced for. Restricting the length of quarantine to what is scientifically reasonable given the known duration of incubation periods, and not adopting an overly precautionary approach to this, would minimise the effect on people. Evidence from elsewhere also emphasises the importance of authorities adhering to their own recommended length of quarantine, and not extending it. For people already in quarantine, an extension, no matter how small, is likely to exacerbate any sense of frustration or demoralisation. 40 Imposing a cordon indefinitely on whole cities with no clear time limit (such as has been seen in Wuhan, China) might be more detrimental than strictly applied quarantine procedures limited to the period of incubation. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30460-8/fulltext And indefinitely is all people see. Maybe not full quarantines, but the complete destruction of livelihoods, wealth, and development of their kids. The fact this needs to be explained as a much greater threat then Covid is insane.
