Buffalo Sabres & NHL 2020-2021

The return has indeed been messed with in part because Eichel chose to do that on full display at his presser. Regardless, the Sabres should hold firm and seek to get the best return no matter what team in what conference it is with, including Boston. Not that they have an adequate return, anyway. As long as the deal is done before his NMC kicks in next year, we can be patient. Which everyone has to be anyway, given the timeframe for his recovery.

Has there been any comment on that timeframe of recovery?

I would be surprised if any team would make a trade for Eichel  unless he is 100% healthy. They would want to see him play next season in Buffalo at his highest level. I just hope they can also keep Reinhart  , Linus , and a more happy and healthy Eichel.

Won’t know until after the prescribed (and agreed upon by Eichel’s own doctors) 12 week rehab is finished. That’s in early June according to Adams.

If Skinner doesn't turn it around next season , has a no trade clause , would be cheaper to buyout.

Realistically I don’t think they can buy him out until summer of 2023 the earliest.

If they bought him out in 2022, he’d be on the books for 10 years.

I’d say “thanks Botterill” but I read/heard the Pegulas got involved.

He better temporarily suspend his NMC so we can protect another player in the upcoming expansion draft. He was incredulous when asked about it during his presser.

Buyouts are not part of the current Pegula management portfolio.

Haven't been for a while.

The days of "I'll dig a well" are long over and money is an issue with the team, as it has been for most of its history.

On EPSN Rochester this afternoon, had a Sabres reporter on (didn't catch who) who brought ups internet mentions that this whole surgery drama is a fabrication by Eichel and his agent.  They actually don't want the Sabres to trade him this year because next year his no trade kicks in the he controls where he goes.  This guy said that Eichel's agent has pulled this kind of thing before with another client.

Anyway, they would be wise to get what they can for him ASAP, if he's even tradeable right now.

Its strange.  Like 31 other teams always trying to get better and the Sabres sit here and obsess about preserving their "lines of communication" and "authenticity hires".

Enjoy the hell out of the Bills right now.  When its time to transition, the Pegulas will absolutely take that franchise into the gutter as well.

Spoiler alert: Sabres make players worse at hockey.

The second they leave they always turn it around magically.

Yeah, for real. We see it happen over and over again.

Wtf is poisoned here? Clearly SOMETHING is toxic in the Buffalo Sabres organization.

Taylor Hall

Pretty much every player we traded away this season looks better after leaving. Except Staal.

Hall. Montour (he’s looked pretty good for Florida). Even Jonas Johansson looks like a competent backup in Colorado.

and it’s not just this season either. ROR won a selke and a cup and the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) his 1st season away from the Sabres.

Sheary found his game again.

Marcus Johansson looks decent for Minnesota.

Beaulieu looks decent for Winnipeg.

Even Bogosian looked passable.

Because Taylor Hall had no issues whatsoever before he got to Buffalo and he spent so much time here.

Tocchet has ties to Jason Karmanos in Pittsburgh.  Not sure I'd want him here.

Definitely don't want Tocchet, but don't sweat any one or two interviews here.

They are going to interview everyone with a pulse and that's a good plan; this is a golden opportunity to get tons of outside information and opinions on how best to proceed for the organization.

The entire coaching search is more a consultation session than a hunt for the next coach, who may very well be on staff already anyway.

I think there's a great chance Granato is retained as the next "full time" head coach.

Didnt they interview tocchet last time around as well?

No. He was the much talked about “favorite” among hockey media but Botterill never even ask permission to interview him. When asked about it he said he “had too much respect for the PIT coaching staff” to break it up (or something along those lines), which I thought was odd. Made me think there was some reason he wasn’t interested in Tocchet (from their time together in PIT).

You’re probably right, him being a masshole isn’t a reason. After all, Buffalo teams have had them over the years, some of them very good players (I’m looking at you, Fred Smerlas).

You must not have heard the thigs Fred said about the Bills and Buffalo while on WEEI.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I know I stopped watching last season, and I’ve always been one who watches every game (even through the tank years).

But this last season I just lost all interest. I couldn’t do it anymore. I did start watching again towards the end when it looked like they were finally giving an effort again, but even then I’d only tune in for maybe 1/2 the game, or I’d only 1/2 watch while I was browsing on my computer or something.

Watching the playoffs makes me realize how far away the Sabres are from being competitive.  With or without Eichel they have no where near the same amount of talent.  The puck movement, the play making, the vision, the speed, the grit and physicality... the Sabres have none of that.

The Sabres have all of that...in little, inconsistent, bursts.

Actually it's a shame so many people tuned out the Sabres once Granato took over. They were fun to watch.

Yes, he fixed the effort problem. Now on to the talent and grit portion.

I watched the Granato team.  I am also watching the playoffs.  That is how I was able to say that even this spunky Granato led team is nowhere near the caliber of the teams I am watching in the post season.

I would absolutely ******* HATE trading Reinhart for a goalie. Especially someone I don’t even consider elite. I’d put Merzlikins right around Ullmark, personally.

Reinhart was top 10 in the NHL in goals this past season.
Merzlikins is not top 10 in any stat. Never has been.

He’s maybe a mid tier starter IMO.

Oh, and he already made comments about Buffalo a while back.

I Don’t blame Adams for this one. Davidsson hasn’t done much to be worth signing.

and to be fair to botterill, the rest of that 2017 draft actually looks ok, especially now that Mittelstadt is finding his game.

Mitts, UPL, Laaksonen, Bryson, Weissbach.

Time will tell on UPL and the rest but it looks like we might get a few contributors from that class (which is more than I can say for many of Buffalo’s draft classes).

Fella on the Sabres' board here perfectly encapsulated the Sabres' decade of failure regarding, well, everything, but especially the lottery and player development. Hope for first, get third, draft like 15th.

didnt even know this was tonight.

Ha ha, me neither. Such is my fallen interest in anything Sabres related.

As to the lottery, I can’t remember a prospect group like this one. It really doesn’t matter where we pick. You can literally put the top 10 rated prospects in a hat, pull out names one at a time and rank them that way. Regardless, whoever we get and where, it will be a year or two before we see him in a Sabre uniform.
