Pro athletes are the least egotistical professionals outside of bee keepers and librarians. I doubt it was a money grab. He was making 4-5m I bet for the MNF gig. There are very few pro athletes anywhere that give it up until they are forced to, and personally I don't blame them for playing as long as they can. It is ironic that he will be one of those few pro athletes who did gave it up voluntarily and on his own terms only to be forced to a year or so later. Yeah, he lost a step later in his career, but he still put up catch totals of 73/64/77/69/63 in his last five years. It wasn't like there was a precipitous drop-off in production during his final season. I think he'll be fine as long as Dallas doesn't use him as the focal point of their offense, as they seemed to do for so many years. No way he can withstand that. The 2018 version of Antonio Gates looked like it belonged on a buffet line, not a football field. Still, I recall a couple of big plays by the big man. The rumors were he was offered 4-4.5m for the MNF gig, and Schefter reported the Cowboys deal is 3.5 (which I assume has 1.5 in incentives as I have also seen the 5m number.
