Is your memory getting worse with age?

Recommended Posts

I'm only 37 and I'm already experiencing forgetfulness.  I don't want to say memory loss because that sounds like really serious stuff.

Like for instance, I had to buy another fuel cap the other day because after I got gas, I forgot to put on the cap before I drove off.

Last week as I was getting my son in the car, I put my cup on top of the roof.  Forgot about that cup and drove off...cup splashed all over my windshield.

Forgot my lunch today.  It's sitting on the counter in my kitchen as we speak.

The coffee station at my work is close to the bathrooms.  I'll put in a k-cup and then go to the bathroom.  When I leave the bathroom, sometimes I forget about my coffee.

It's little things I like this.  Did you guys experience this in your late 30's?

I think that the only thing that is affecting me negatively is an abnormal amount of stress lately.  Just takes a little longer to recall things than it usually does.  I can still remember a lot of periods in my life going back to being a preschooler.

I'll admit have lost a little there but not much.  It only bothers me because I have prided myself in being Jeopardy smart in the past.  There are exceptions such as never knowing much about poetry.

i have little knowledge of anything in pop culture since 1986, knew everything from 1286 to 1986 back in the day

I'm just a couple years ahead of you at 40, and can say that my short term memory is simply awful. I always stop my wife if she starts giving more than one assignment off the honey-do list at a time, because I know there is no way I will remember it without another list! I'll tell her to text it to me :).  Sometimes I'll come down the stairs and forget what I came down for in the first place...and the list goes on. I'm guessing (hoping) it's kinda normal at this age? I will say my long term memory couldn't be better, and I rarely forget a face (name is different problem with newer acquaintances) so I think it's nothing too serious yet, lol.

My ex used to text me when I was running errands because I would always forget something.  Like if I had to run to the grocery store, we needed eggs, milk, coffee, toothpaste and bread.

I would always, always forget at least one item...sometimes two.

that's because you didn't really care to do this and was a bit resentful at being asked in the first place

This isn't right Row.  I was the one who typically went out to get stuff, I actually liked to get out of the house.  Most of the times it was to go buy beer, while I'm out, what else do we need.

i have the same thing going on at 41, but i don't think it's a memory issue.  as others have mentioned, we just have a lot more ***** going on now making it harder to keep everything straight.  years ago everything was neatly organized in my head.  now it's a train wreck up there.  i have to leave notes for myself in my schedule, with sticky notes, my staff, etc.  i force my wife to remember things for me just so i don't use up valuable space.  the drugs don't help either.

Maybe you've always been dumb and just don't remember it?

How can you forget that you're dumb?

If your memory is bad you might be convinced that these lapses of brain activity are a recent phenomenon.  Its not that you forgot that you're an idiot, but just never knew until now.  Does that make sense?

But it is a recent phenomenon though.  I never had issues before I hit my mid 30's.  So now, your theory falls apart like the Jets this past weekend.

Have you also noticed increased difficulty planning/completing tasks or making decisions?

Completeing tasks like cleaning yes for sure.

If you've noticed it others may have noticed your change in behavior before you did it but were hesitant to speak up

Ask your wife and kids if they've noticed the change in you as well.  Or maybe ask the wife and have her discreetly prod the kids for their input.  Maybe bring it up with coworkers that you trust

If you find this has been going on longer than you realized, it might be time to consult a doctor.

I can still remember 45 of the 50 state capitals.  Kinda proves I’m still smart.  I bet you can name 40.

We have 50 states? Holy moly, who knew???

I give up........
