To paraphrase another TBD contributor:  What do we really know about the Las Vegas ownership and front office?  Are they in league with the devil?  Where were they before they came to Las Vegas?

Why are they called "Vegas" when they are Las Vegas...  And why is Tampa Bay not Tampa, but kinda get that... It's the Tampa-St.Pete Bay area.

By calling them Vegas, are the disassociated from the gambling Mafia connection?

It's Las Vegas = The Meadows.  "The" is kinda important, because it's their name!

I'm with you on this.  It's not as if Vegas is some sort of hockey hotbed; the Knights are the "in" thing to do right now.  Wait until they miss the playoffs one year and the "new" fans are like, "what is this crap?"  Winning big early in a non-traditional market isn't a positive (in my opinion) unless they can keep it going.

Serious question: Would losing early in a non-traditional market be a positive?

You're not really serious are you?  The point is that in a non-traditional market you're looking to build a fanbase that will support the team through the good and bad.  If they have to "grow" with the team it builds loyalty.  There are no absolutes here; just a gut feeling.

Well I was a little confused why you thought winning wasn't a positive as the alternative to winning is losing, and that would be a much bigger negative, IMO.

I do disagree a little bit though. When building a fan base, you have to get the kids. The 6-20s year old demographic. You get those fans by being winners, because kids love winners. Then they are fans for life. And their kids are fans.

Look at the Bills in the 90s and most of our fanbase. How many lifelong fans did that Super Bowl era beget? Versus the 2000-2010 era?

You're right, no absolutes. But success out of the gate is a positive when it comes to growing a fan base, IMO.

You make good points, and no I'm not suggesting that new franchises need to be the '62 Mets.  But in certain markets in which there is lots of other stuff to do -- I characterize Vegas as such a market -- early amazing success followed by a drop-off can, I think, have a very negative impact when it's suddenly not the "hot" thing any more.

The Bills are a really bad comparison, in my opinion.

I wouldn't count on it.

whats the general thought Dante about what the Sharks are going to do with Kane?  I am hoping they are going sign him, but guess that is up to Kane as well. My sense from 3,000 miles away is it seems like a good fit on both sides.?

Considering the erudite bunch we have here, does anyone know how the 'fan base' is comprised in Las Vegas?  Does the season ticket holder base consist more of individuals, or is it the hotels and casinos underwriting season tickets?  With the number of visitors in and out of Vegas, a large corporate base for season ticket holders would probably skew high for attendance numbers, since the hotels and casinos are handing out the seats to patrons for repeat hotel visits or high participation in the gaming rooms.

I would like to see them sign Kane. Let Thornton go as he is an FA this summer. Let Ward go. Make a serious bid for Taveras.

This morning they are saying that Kane is "Non-commital" on resigning. We didn't get too much out of Kane in the Vegas series as he is obviously still injured and no way 100%. Same with Danskoi for that matter.

Anyway, my fear is they don't sign Kane or Taveras. Sign Joe and extend Pavelski. Too slow.  Time to move on.

MAF might steal a game for them otherwise it’s brooms. Jets are so talented and peaking at the right time. Size, skill, and hungry and Hell boy is better than I expected.

They are a nice team. Not going to be easy against the Knights. You don't get a inch and they are quick.

The Predators and Thrashers did not do this well in their inaugural season, or for many years after. The VGK year has been a record-breaking one. I don't think it has much to do with a "welfare" system as it has been put. Certainly being gifted Fleury helps, but even then no one predicted he would be playing this well.

Not a fan of either team but its always kind of cool to see a team finally get past the team they always struggle against in the playoffs.  Reminds me a little bit of MJ finally getting past the Bad Boys Pistons teams in 91.  Congrats to the Caps, that was a big win for that franchise!

Think I'm pulling for Tampa now.

I live in Tampa and am rooting for the Caps... it's 93 here right now, this is a hockey town? Also pulling for the Jets, can't imagine what their fans went through for those years.

Sunday at 8 PM???  Why????

Good thing GoT isn’t on I’d be in a dilemma!!!!!

I don't get the NHL. Why the wait until Thursday for the Preds/Jets game? Talk about taking the steam out of a series. WTF? Dumb.

Also, on a side note. What is up with Volkswagen and the commercial they show on all the NHL games? How the hell can they sell me a Volkswagen by showing me a bunch of drugged out, smelly, grubby hippies pushing a pos VW bus out of some mud probably contaminated by human waste from overworked porta-potties? Ugh!

Is it in CBA that they need a travel day?

Oh... You aren't their target base. :P

But it's 3 days. Struck me as a bit odd.

And I guess I'm not in VW's demographic cause I just find that ad so offputting! Although a friend has one of those VW vans but the beach version with the roof windows, surfboards etc. I have to admit it is pretty cool. This is it

Oh... Thought it was 2.

Nice.  Too clean.  Perfect.  Neurotic isn't "cool."  "Chill" with a dirty van is.

Culture appropriation!  You should be ashamed of yourself!

:D:P
