In case you want to have an honest conversation, you should re-read 2a... You know, in the law you cite. Then reconcile with the above.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Canada is the only country to ever sign a safe third country deal with the US.

This will go to the courts.

That tweet makes no sense.  1158 is US law, not a treaty, and the courts certainly have jurisdiction.

It is an inartfully worded tweet.

Here's the relevant section:

Quote

(2) Exceptions

(A) Safe third country

Paragraph (1) shall not apply to an alien if the Attorney General determines that the alien may be removed, pursuant to a bilateral or multilateral agreement, to a country (other than the country of the alien’s nationality or, in the case of an alien having no nationality, the country of the alien’s last habitual residence) in which the alien’s life or freedom would not be threatened on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, and where the alien would have access to a full and fair procedure for determining a claim to asylum or equivalent temporary protection, unless the Attorney General finds that it is in the public interest for the alien to receive asylum in the United States.

Nothing like trying to boil convoluted statutory/regulatory/international agreement schemes to 140 characters or less.

I know the law.  As I said earlier, it's the wrong one.

The tweet itself...it manages to conflate three different things into a great big ball of wrong.

You guys can go back and forth on the details of the law but the core question remains...what recently changed in Central America to cause this flood of asylum seekers? I haven’t seen anything about a natural disaster, war or other catastrophic event. In other words, their claims are fraudulent! These are opportunists looking for work. They aren’t running AWAY from anything. They’re running TOWARDS jobs in the American economy. Claim denied!

What changed? That's easy: money and organizers mysteriously flowed in to organize and coordinate these 'caravans'.

Hmmmmn, that's like maybe a wealthy Hungarian has extra money to spend in order to change the makeup of the USA and promote the New World Order.

You are not allowed to mention him, or you will be called an anti-Semite.

"A photo went viral of New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the border, as on the other side of the detention center fence stood another Latina woman, a customs officer..."

"... who works for U.S. Customs & Border Protection, which the Internet couldn’t help but dub 'Ice Bae.' The hashtag quickly grew in popularity on Twitter, and while there were some people supporting the woman identified as Kiara Cervante, many users were angry at the inappropriate nickname, and then incensed at her proud response to the overnight fame. In the viral meme, Kiara appears to be unaffected while AOC and her supporters rally outside the fence. Once identified, Cervante created a Twitter account, which already has 12K followers, and posted a video online introducing herself to all her new 'fans.' In the clip she says, 'It’s me. I’m based in Texas. And yeah, I don’t what else to say.'"

Here's the (put together) picture that frames her with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:

REPORT: Trump Administration Has Reunited 95% Of Migrant Children With Their Families Or Sponsors

</snip>

The data provided had identified 2,648 children who were believed to have been separated at the southern border. The committee only had data from HHS on 1,619 of those children, but found that 99% had been discharged from HHS custody.

“Of the 1,603 discharged children, 1,546 children—or 95 percent—were either reunified with an individual sponsor or released to a parent. Specifically, 1,061 children were released to a parent and 485 children were reunified with an individual sponsor,” the report found.

The remaining 73 children who were discharged but not reunited have also been accounted for. Sixteen are being cared for by HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (which determined four of the 16 hadn’t been separated from a parent), 21 had sought a voluntary departure and went back to his or her home country, 20 turned 18 while in custody and could no longer be held by ORR, eight were sent to another migrant program, six went to a DHS family shelter, one was granted immigration relief, and that last child was a runaway.

Jim Jordan lays blame smack-dab where it belongs after grandstanding spectacle in border crisis hearing

by Frieda Powers

Original Article

Rep. Jim Jordan unloaded a scathing rebuke of Democrats and their hypocrisy during a House hearing on border facilities and issues related to migrant family separations. The Ohio Republican and Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee slammed Democrats for “making ridiculous and dangerous statements” in a fiery speech following an outburst by Chairman Elijah Cummings while questioning Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan on Thursday.Jordan accused Democrats of “choosing to play politics” with the border crisis issue, “fabricating stories of cruelty and besmirching the hard-working civil servants protecting the border.”

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema pushes program to streamline removal of migrant families without valid asylum claims

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is pushing for the implementation of a pilot program along the U.S.-Mexico border that aims to more quickly screen and remove migrant families without valid legal claims for asylum in the United States.

Sinema, D-Ariz., joined a bipartisan group with eight other senators who sent a letter Wednesday to acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan describing their proposed program, dubbed "Operation Safe Return."

</snip>

The program would allow the Department of Homeland Security to deport certain migrants within 15 days, according to the letter, and would help alleviate overcrowding at border facilities, Sinema said.

Crazy thing is that she seems more "Republican"  than Jeff Flake ever did.

Could be positioning herself as a more center D for when the Democratic civil war is over?

All she has to do is re-run the hundreds of democrat accolades that she received after her election.

She was a favorite then..................

Possible. Maybe she is hearing the muffled cries of "If you want to fix the problem, do your damn job legislators!!" coming from the peanut gallery.

If I remember correctly she barely won out over McSally with a ridiculous amount of late votes going her way.

Mexico uncovers massive migrant smuggling ring using trucks

Quote

Mexican officials said Monday they have uncovered an industrial-scale migrant smuggling ring using tractor-trailer rigs disguised as freight deliveries for major companies.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said authorities found a tractor-trailer disguised with the logo of a major grocery store chain. But instead of groceries, it was carrying about 150 migrants.

In June, Mexico detected five freight trucks carrying 925 migrants, almost all from Central America. Some of those trucks bore the logos of well-known firms, though it was not clear if those trucks were also fakes or had been used illegally by drivers without the companies' knowledge.

"Controversial"? CBS gotta CBS. First touch country is where you seek asylum in most of the world.

Judge allows Trump administration's most restrictive asylum ban to continue

Washington — A federal judge on Wednesday declined to block a new rule that effectively bars most migrants from Central America and other countries from seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. The decision allows the Trump administration to implement for now its most ambitious effort yet to unilaterally overhaul the asylum system.

Judge Timothy Kelly of the U.S. District Court in Washington denied a request by several immigrant advocacy groups to issue an temporary order blocking the controversial asylum policy.
