Say what you will About him, but at least the guy plays and isn’t out injured every other game.

Man I hope that’s not the standard now for what we look for at safety.

Sadly, I agree.  There’s no way the backend of the D will hold up against playoff teams.  Unless something goes really sideways for Baltimore I expect an absolute WHOOPIN the first game.  Hopefully, it serves as a wake up call to the team.  Allen is greatness defined and the rest of the team is pretty much “mid” defined.

I said this all last season and people mocked me constantly. He has neverrrrrrr been good.

Problem is they don’t have anyone to replace him with because they missed badly on Cole and have made no other real moves to solidify the safety position.

Rolling into another season with often injured Rapp and liability Hamlin wasn’t a good idea last year and isn’t a good idea this year.

I am not giving up on Bishop yet based on a preseason game. For a rookie, he played reasonably well down the stretch last season and, after a poor start, definitely got better over the course of it.

What is the argument here? That because he was the victim of an unfortunate freak accident (that ended up turning out okay), he just automatically gets a roster spot in perpetuity?

It’s not my argument. If Hamlin can’t play, then why else would he keep a roster spot?

Don’t sell yourself short.  You were mocked for plenty of other things as well.

This, I think, it the reasonable take right now.  Last night was ugly but he really has just gotten back into practice.  At least he didn’t get hurt!

... If you can replace him with a better player but Cole Bishop isn't there yet.

I trust Hamlin over Bishop.

Neither one made a good showing last night ! I was hoping last. year that the guy they got to take Hamlin's place that was injured that they would have at least gave him a shot but didn't and he bolted which I can't blame him .

Hamlin is at very best a depth player if they start him again it will be another long season on D but I would hope they can see what we all do and don;;t allow their emotions to play a role in their decision !! At least Bishop is younger and has possibilities of getting better Hamlin has hit his ceiling & it's not very high .

Hamlin is the Safety version of Levi Wallace.  Half-a$$ attempts by McBeane to replace him and after Bishop’s development has been slowed by injuries here we are again staring at Hamlin starting opening day.

We went into last year thinking safety would be the biggest concern only to notice the entire defense was a problem.

at some point we have to look at the scheme itself.

Right now I think the starting safeties are Rapp and Lewis.  Lewis gets a bad rap because of that one play against the Vikings, but to me he offers a lot more than Hamlin.  Bishop needs to get his butt in gear as the third guy, and Hancock is 4th.  And Hamlin gets cut.

I agree that safety play is one part of it. The other part is McDermott's scheme, which has been exposed every year in the playoffs in the Allen era, even with a pair of All-Pros at safety. Put incompetents like Bishop and Hamlin back there, and you're practically guaranteeing the same result. Rapp can play, but he's one of the most injury-prone players on the roster. In the whole, sad bunch, the only one with potential is Hancock. The only answer might be to put him at free safety alongside Rapp and pray that they both stay healthy. That and lock McDermott in a closet come playoff time.

McD is too emotionally invested in him to cut him unfortunately.

If this is true, this is a HUGE indictment on his ability to lead!

I'd think they are looking at every aspect of the D and if what you say is true than why in some games last year did the D come up pretty big in somme games and not others ?

As the players such as Josh & others have said, the other guy get paid too to stop them and are very good at what they do . I hope that the younger guys get the D down by mid season to dominate throughout the rest of the season .

The Bills have no viable safeties.

Rapp is hurt again and remains hurt.

Forrest apparently can't beat out a much of injured or bad players.

Hamlin is all effort no results.

Bishop is raw and injury prone

Hancock is a rookie with zero NFL experience.

Cam Lewis is a JAG and not even a good one.

Does the work dumpster fire mean anything.

Hamlin is a backup Safety and totally replaceable - no doubt.

But his replacement is not on this roster, and if they are, they certainly haven't stepped up to show it yet.

Hamlin is going no where this year because Safety is currently our weakest position group and its not close.  Rapp and Bishop will start, Hamlin will back up Bishop and the hope is that Bishop takes a step forward this year to be at the very min an improvement on what our Safeties did last year.

The only hope in terms of someone replacing Hamlin is Forrest steps up - but I don't think I have heard his name mentioned even once the entire offseason by anyone and he is still at the back of the depth chart.  So odds of that happening before the season begins seems pretty unlikely and he is teetering on being a roster bubble guy right now.
