ChiGoose
From Military Times: "The Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act — better known as the PACT Act — had been up for a procedural vote in the chamber with an expectation of final passage before the end of the week. The measure is the culmination of years of work by advocates to improve health care and benefits for veterans suffering injuries from burn pit smoke, Agent Orange spraying and other military contaminant exposure. It has been widely celebrated as a potential landmark legislative victory in veterans policy. The measure passed the Senate by a comfortable 84-14 vote in early June, and by a 342-88 vote in the House two weeks ago with significant Republican support. But on Wednesday, after technical corrections sent the measure back to the Senate for another procedural vote, 41 Senate Republicans blocked the measure, leaving its future uncertain." The bill was good enough for the GOP last month, but suddenly providing benefits to our veteran's is no longer acceptable. 1

Tenhigh
Pretty crappy, and I'm betting it's going to get pushed through in short order. Its gross when politicians play politics with people's lives, I remember something similar with an early covid relief bill.

Buffarukus
big problem we have in a 2 party system is one side is always completely oppositional even to rational things. remember dems blocking police reform bill in the middle of blm. i dont even think it was all that rational but dems def did not want rep addressing that issue before a election. its so dysfunctional i can see rep blocking anything that could be considered a win so dems have nothing to go into elections on. happens all the time to the detriment of US citizens if its true and it was purely a bill to block veteran help then at the very least the slugs blocking it get the vote played repeatedly in any election in the future. sanders wants provisions in the microchip bill on who gets subsidies to keeps jobs in the US and maintains union integrity if it exists? manchin has to force subsidies in the clean energy for nuclear? this all is non partisan stuff we all should agree on yet sanders was denied and luckily nuclear was a sticking point!? why!!? they literally go out of their way to be as corrupt as possable. ALF
Sen. Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican, has been pushing for an amendment focused on the funding for the bill for several weeks, placing a hold on the legislation before the July 4 recess. He wants to change it so the funding of the bill is handled through the annual appropriations process instead of being mandatory spending as the Democrats have structured it in the bill. https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/28/politics/chuck-schumer-burn-pits-vote-republican-frustration/index.html Toomey being a jerk , bill should pass next week.

It's not really that complicated, 3.5 million veterans so if treatment costs $1000 for each one that's 3.5 Billion, if it's $10,000 that's 35 Billion, $100,000 would be 350 Billion. All that's ignoring whatever costs there are setting the whole thing up and processing it.

Republicans will use pork spending as the rationale although they passed the exact same bill in June 84-14. The House changed just added a minor revision on awarding tax credits if VA healthcare providers move to high-need locations. There's no pork in the bill. All of it goes to veterans who suffered from toxic exposures during their service. Republicans misplayed this politically and some veterans may suffer because of it. Pathetic. 1
