2022 Concerts: Who Is Everyone Going to See?

Got tickets for Springsteen last week for March in DC.  Yeah, I know all the controversy about the ticket prices and such, but I got a pair of pretty good seats for $200/each and was in and out of Ticketmaster in about 10 minutes.

First saw him in Rochester in December 1980 during The River tour and have seen him several times since, the last being The River revival tour in 2016.  Always an awesome three hour plus show.

This past Wednesday (8/17) we went to see Loverboy, Styx and REO at SPAC (Saratoga Springs, NY).

Loverboy was surprisingly good.  I had literally zero interest in catching their set, but alas, we all made our way in before they began.

Mike Reno - now 67 and twice the size of his younger self - was pretty much a statue for the 45 minutes they played.  Didn't matter, though.  They sounded great and played a ton of familiar hits.  Even though he was stuck in cement, the band managed to engage the crowd.  I was surprised at how many people were already in their seats/on the lawn when they began.  The crowd was TOTALLY into them and it was pretty cool to see.

Styx was phenomenal.  Tommy Shaw - now 68 - continues to drink from the fountain of youth.  His voice has not taken one hit.  The Dennis DeYoung replacement dude (Lawrence Gowan) is absolutely fantastic.  Hard to believe he's been their guy for over 20 years now.  He does every DeYoung song justice and has an amazing stage presence.  The only lowlight of their hour-long set was Mr. Roboto, which it appears they don't play every night.  Lucky me.  I hate that ***** song.  Other than that, they easily stole the night.

REO was very good ... but I felt disappointed.  They played some crappy and unfamiliar songs throughout the middle of their set and the vibe wasn't great.  This was my second time seeing REO and Styx together (first time was nearly 20 years ago).  At the first show, Journey was the headliner (yuck); REO opened and Styx played second.  REO stole that show without a doubt.  Maybe it was because it was a shorter set and they left the crap out.  But, all in all, they were very good.  Kevin Cronin - now 70 - still has pipes and a ton of energy.  We actually left before they were done, which sucked because I didn't get to hear Roll With the Changes (my favorite REO tune).  We had endured enough pouring rain for the evening (had lawn seats) and decided to get out early.

Bottom line ... I'd definitely recommend catching this show if you can get decently-priced tickets.  Great nostalgia.  Great tunes.  FANTASTIC people watching.  A bunch of boomers and Gen Xers partying like it's 1989.  Good stuff.

Billy Strings was ***** awesome. So, so good live. That was my first time seeing them, but it won't be my last. Acoustic, upbeat, shake-yer-ass bluegrass in the first set. Then, after the sun went down, they came out and played more electric, spaced out, improvisatory stuff in the second set. So one could say they followed the tried and true Grateful Dead method. It worked!

Going to see a bunch of music I'm not familiar with tomorrow. Courtney Barnett, WaXahatchee, Sleater Kinney, and Fred Armisen. I know Armisen, of course, though I have no idea what kind of set he'll do (comedy? music?). A friend had an extra ticket and offered to take me. I'm not one to turn down a free outdoor summer concert. I like discovering new music. On first listen, WaXahatchee is pretty awesome. Barnett not bad either. Sleater Kinney is kind of not for me, but I'll put up with one unfavorable act if it means a bunch of other good music.

Trey Anastasio Band, Ben Harper, and two nights of Bob Weir and Wolf Bros still to come.

You're going to LOVE Courtney Barnett.  She's put out some incredible music in a short time. Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchie is also awesome.  Sleater Kinney and Fred armisen lends itself to a potential portlandia vibe😂.  I'm about to buy Trey/Goose tickets myself

The venue I'm seeing them at is 30 minutes outside of Portland.

Based on the location and the lineup, I'm picturing a sea of hipsters for sure.

(side note: Once, while working at a hotel front desk, I waited on Fred Armisen in drag. Like the picture below. They were a filming a Portlandia sketch in our lobby. He walked up to me, and the first thing he said, totally deadpan was "Hi. I don't really look like this. I'm in a costume". It took all the effort I could muster not to laugh at the whole situation.)

When Levon Helm was alive, I used to see Fagen on keyboards for performances at 'The Barn', in Woodstock. I never saw Steely Dan, but Fagen is a first rate keyboard player!

Somehow his piano work is lost in the ether... the man knows the keyboard whether piano or the organ and it's varieties.

And don't forget the melodica!

I like Steely Dan, but @ The Barn, Fagen's duties were playing the Ivory's.

There is a familial connection to Levon Helm, but I'm not quite sure, what it was.

Once Levon passed, the Fagen appearances, stopped.

Donald's wife, Libby Titus, used to be married to Levon.

Saw those two with someone else, maybe it was Don Felder, a few years ago.  Styx was the middle act, REO was the closer.  Styx should have been the closing act.  I don't know why they continue to keep REO as the closer.  A lot of people left our concert early also, even with the nice weather.

How was the show?  Just heard Courtney Barnett on the radio and it reminded me you were going.  I'm such a big fan of hers

It was really good, thanks for asking.

Fred Armisen was really funny. He did very musician-specific comedy. Anyone in the audience who was a musician -- or at least was passionate and knowledgeable about music -- probably enjoyed it. Anyone who wasn't, maybe didn't. He had a real Andy Kaufman-esque "I don't really care if you think I'm funny or not" vibe. I thought it was hilarious.

Waxahatchee was good. Didn't have a band behind her. Just got up with an acoustic guitar, solo, and sang her songs. She's a good songwriter with a lovely voice and impressive vocal range.

Courtney Barnett was really good. Coming in, to the degree that I knew anything about any of these acts, I was more a fan of Waxahatchee's stuff. I liked what I had heard from Barnett well enough, but her live act really hit differently. Her band was tight and energetic. It was different than what I expected after listening to her most recent album, but different in a good way. I liked it quite a bit. Between the three member band and Courtney playing a left-handed Washburn guitar, I got real Nirvana vibes.

Sleater Kinney.....still isn't for me. I gave it a chance. I really did. Just not my cup of tea.

My neighborhood of East Atlanta is historically the punk/bar venue capital in town. We just got a bigger/newish venue which is catering perfectly to my middle-aged parent demographic.

The Shins played last week.

Was going to get tickets for Interpol/Spoon next week. But now see Spoon isnt playing this show.

Going to try to see Ween in a couple weeks.

Clutch/Quicksand/Helmet is intriguing but probably wont make that

Father John Misty on a Friday, and then Pavement the next day, is a MUST in October.

Glad to have shows back!

Eagerly awaiting your review!!!

Man they were so good.  Really effin good.

Started out acoustic, almost like unplugged with everyone seated.  5 songs.  A couple were rare gems (Yellow Moon, Man of the Hour).  By the 6th song, the crowd was wanted to let loose and we got the perfect song for it - Given to Fly.  Eddie obviously knows how to hold a crowd, both musically and verbally.  He knew about Hamilton - the hockey team etc.  He knew about a member of their fan club who passed away recently.  He know about another who made the trip from Berlin cause it was on his birthday.  I doubt he does this sleuthing himself, but there must be someone whose job it is to prowl the social networks for this stuff.  He read people's signs, he scoped what PJ gear people were wearing.

One song (Sad) in the playlist hadn't been played live in 6 years.

They even flipped around and played a tune for the people sitting behind the stage.

The stage itself wasn't much, but the show ROCKED

I have always done whatever it took to avoid looking at setlists and any other kinds of spoilers.  I never understood why people want to know.

On that note, I am a strictly Waters-era Pink Floyd fan - including the Syd-era; so the Mason show sounds fantastic.  I'm heavily leaning toward going.

I saw Waters do the Wall at MSG back in 2010 and it was amazing.  That said, I never cared for his solo stuff, so I'm skipping this year's tour.

Seeing a show at Red Rocks is something I'd love to do someday.

Red Rocks is on my list but...woman in the beer line today told me (I was complaining about the f'ing ticket master tax) that A draft beer was $17 there.   We paid 5 for bud light, 6 for better.

We went to Red Rocks in 2019. I paid $10 for craft beer.

Nope. Works like to but too much going on here.  There are competing shows on the same night.

One show I'm going to see in November is the Legendary Pink Dots. They are a Dutch group that defy categories, have released 121 albums since 1981, and are likely on their last US tour. FYI they play Kung Fu Necktie in Philly Nov. 9.

This show is going to be at the Middle East club in Cambridge, just as legendary a music venue. It's been announced the club is being sold to a developer.

@Gugny a few tips for anyone attending a show at Red Rocks amphitheter. Wear comfortable shoes. It is an uphill Climb into the venue. There are golfcarts  for those who aren't able to climb/walk that far

This next one is very important. Make sure you exit from the same place you entered. We made this mistake once and we had to walk all the way back up the incline,  go back inside the amphitheater , traverse it, to exit at correct side. It was at night and we messed up. It was a LOT

Bring binoculars and be prepared for an awesome experience. The stage sits at the bottom, red rock sides. The view behind the stage is amazing.  Oh My I saw some great shows there back in the 80's

This weekend Borderland Festival is in East Aurora. It's a surprisingly big festival with a good lineup that a lot of people in WNY may not know about (and as I just posted a thread about - Tasker and Christie will be there Sunday signing autographs).

Donna the Buffalo are a great jam band.  They were at the festival this weekend and crushing it.  The infamous string dusters are fun and good.  Have a blast!  Keller Williams has a great rep but never really hooked me.

It seems like anyone can pull off a stadium tour these days.  Frusciante is back, so the demand is, too.  I was lucky enough to see them back in 2006 with Frusciante (I remember tickets cost me $41 for decent seats) at the Pepsi Arena (~19k seating) in Albany, so I'm good.
