None of these guys, not even Zack Wilson, needs a punch in the face more than Trevor Lawrence.

Mac Jones averaged 4.5 yards per pass and most were checkdowns. He didn't show me good pocket awareness when he turned his back to his RT and was rocked. He has to work a lot on mechanics, considering most passes were to the dirt. If he does this against starters he will be toast.

20 years ago I'd have gladly taken a bet with anyone that:

 

Peyton Manning will be a bust

Tom Brady will be a bust

 

As long as I could also take the field and make 30 other bets, one per team

As I know I'd come out ahead money wise on all those bets if I took the field.

 

I will say these days, not so sure I'd make that bet anymore as there seems to be a resurgence in good QB's.  Not sure why??

Everyone except Lawrence has bust potential.  I’m not getting in that trap as much as I’ve watched all of these guys, no sure things.

 

The biggest variable for so many is the coaching and Mgmt.  Josh walked into a double down awesome situation with Beane, McD, Daboll his entire first three years, and Frazier is underrated for his consistency at defense.

 

I don’t think Darnold would be Allen if he were in Buffalo, but I also don’t think Allen would be who he is today with the Jests.

 

Lawrence makes me nervous as Meyer has no idea how to be an effective NFL coach.  The last HOF conversion guy is J Johnson from my POV.

 

Shanahan and Lynch have a great program in SF.  Tons of talent and coaching, and all injuries coming back.  Lots of raw talent if he sits.  You get my point as I believe Salah could be another McD.  It’s possible.

 

I think Fields I’d screwed as those guys at the top are toast.

A lot of these rookie QB's have good WR groups. I think we're going to see some big numbers from rookie QB's. 

 

I think Wilson has the toughest road.

Lawrence - Low expectations.  But honestly the talent is there on the offense.  Etienne gives them another option in the run game.  Chark, Jones, Shenault isn't bad.

Wilson - They added some pieces but the offensive line is still not good.  No run game.  Davis crowder mims is a pretty mediocre group.

 

Lance - Will probably sit for a year.  I think he's in a good spot though.  

 

Fields - Potential to be the greatest bears QB in 50 years.  But that offense will probably still be bad.

 

Jones - They added a ton, he's got a decent chance to get on the field this year.  Offensive line is usually strong there.  I just don't see a potential stud.  Something like Kirk Cousins.  

 

I see Fields and Wilson as most likely busts.  QB starved fan bases who seem to never have QBs, and football has a way of just keeping with tradition.  My guess for the stud is Lawrence.  Lance is a wildcard.  Jones will be fine.

Fields has a pretty good surrounding cast.

I think the biggest potential for a washout is Wilson for the Jets. First because he was the #2 overall pick and second the tire fire that has been the Jets organization itself for quite some time now. They always go after the biggest/best OL FA's every year and every year it's swing-and-a-miss. By the time that dust settles they're trying to plug holes with 3rd tier options. At the same time, in watching his college film, I saw an accurate QB with a bit of Rodgers to him with Wilson. The biggest worry with him is his size. He's hovering around 200lbs and is not going to hold up if he's continually getting hit. 

 

I honestly think that Lance is in the best situation out of all the QB's drafted and that he's most likely to be the best QB of the class. We have all seen how much coaching matters with Josh and Lance couldn't ask for a better teacher of the game than Shanahan. He's maximized every QB handed to him. Lance also has a dynamic skillset that Shanahan with get to toy with. None of his prior QB's have had this kind of athleticism outside of Robert Griffin III. Lance is built with a much bigger frame and a stronger arm than Griffin had as well. 

 

Lawrence and Meyer paired together? Meh, I like Trevor's chances better once Meyer steps away or gets fired. 

 

Justin Fields has everything that you would want, but he's basically playing for a lame duck GM and coach. That could hurt his development. 

 

Mac Jones is the highest floor, lowest ceiling QB of the bunch. He's smart, he's accurate, but there's nothing that you see him do that makes you say "wow" really. He will likely be a serviceable starter for NE in that McDaniels offense, dinking and dunking his way down the field. Reminds me of a Pennington type of QB.

The last 3-4 posts more eloquently than humble me have amplified my thoughts.  I truly want to give each of these guys the benefit of the doubt as they are young men and their lifelong dream.  I’m not unsympathetic to each of them.  My point was simply where you are drafted with what talent, and most importantly, how well is you’re organization built around them.  It was somewhat of a blessing we didn’t take Mahomes, and took the long road with Tre and then Allen (Id add Edmunds, but too many of you would get ticked at me).

 

Not that I am by ANY means a Jests fan, but I really hope just for the sake of the AFC Salah, can replicate what McD did here, and build a team the right way.   It will take three years, but it would be nice to have the AFCE be what most think the NFCW is now.  I say this as the old phrase iron sharpens iron.  Having a tough division means we are battle tested every year in the playoffs.  I still think we will be kings of the mountain as outside of Mahomes (maybe Herbert in time) will come close to our JA17.    He and Mahomes will be the reincarnation of Manning/Brady.  Mark my words it will be the top billing nationally every year for many many years as it should.

Honestly, I’d be surprised if any of these QB’s are any good or even pro level QB’s.

As expected, seems like They all had good moments and “welcome to the nfl moments” in their first nfl action. Once defenses start actually scheming for them in the regular season, we will start to see the real evolution of the rookies. I did think they all looked pretty poised, which is a good start. I did not see Lawrence or Wilson but heard they were fine. Also will be good to see them play with their starting WRs at some point. A lot of plays left on the field that were good throws by backups WRs.

Listened to a total of ten minutes of ESPN radio this morning, two separate shows. Both of the hosts we're endlessly pumping up Zach Wilson, after he failed to vomit on himself in two series against a second team defense, as the second coming of Aaron Rodgers. Must have gotten the order to do so from on high in ESPN.

I've seen them all (youtube has some nice "every play by..." videos for each of them). I thought they all looked good in their debuts. Fields started rough but got better in the 2nd half (to be expected as the competition had gone down a step). But he runs well and has some nice zip on his passes.

 

Wilson has something about him with his body language that reminds me (don't call me crazy, I don't mean his playing style) of Brady. He just seems very sure of himself in the game, like he's not at all phased by anything.

 

I thought Lance looked great, Lawrence has that confident look even when his o-line is only giving him a micro second before he gets swallowed up. He seemed to be having fun out there, but of course it's his first game so we'll see how that goes if he spends half the season on his ass.

 

As you say, we won't really know until coordinators start planning for them
