RIP Pass Interference Replay

Who makes the decision on all challenges?  Does it go to Al Riveron in NYC, or does the ref of each particular game go under the hood and rule in conjunction with someone in NYC?  Sometimes it drags on and on.  Most fans who watch enuf football can see from the first replay if not from the play in live time what the correct call should be.  The mistake that I find most annoying is when the ref mispots the ball at the end of the play.  This happens way too much.  There are what 6 or 7 zebras all over the place, and they come running in and miss the spot by close to a yard sometimes.  You sit there and scream at the TV, "that's clearly a first down", or he was short by a mile".  Mind boggling when they blow the spot.  Or when the receiver clearly comes down out of bounds with at least one foot and they call it a catch with the ref right near the receiver.  Ugh!!  Lets get the call correct the first time.  And if not streamline the process.

The PI review was a joke.  They overturned NOTHING!!  Saints got screwed in the playoff game against Minnesota.  Kyle Rudolph clearly pushed off when catching the winning TD.  That's like in the NHL in an OT playoff game.  Guy is on a breakaway and clearly gets pulled down and no call.

On another topic just for fun, why is there almost no fighting in NHL Hockey any longer?  Anyone have an intelligent answer for me?

I would like to see it go to NYC or have a sky judge at the stadium in a booth with all the replays.  Direct communication with the ref on the field.  Absolutely not more "going under the hood".

Roster spots are too valuable to continue to carry an enforcer when the whole league basically disarmed.  Its like why aren't NBA offenses running through dominant centers anymore?  The game evolved.

Did the replay ever once change the call on the field?

I can't recall any instances where PI was overturned.

Not one by my count.

It happened, I saw it happen multiple times.  But the overall success rate was pathetically low, and I know at one point was like under 5%.  Don't know where the season finished, but it was a rare overturn to say the least.

I can think of more instances where the call clear as day that the challenge should 100% succeed and they still didn't over turn it.  This was a hard tank by the Refs and NFL allowed it to happen.

I just watched the replay of the Bills Steelers game... that last Steelers throw that was intercepted, Jerry Hughes was tackled from behind. It was SO blatantly  obvious with a ref staring right at them, that you have to wonder. WHY TF was there no flag there? Seriously, WHY?! WTF are rules for?!

Well, in this situation, we don't observe rules... like, wtf, seriously?!

Well the Refs hate Jerry.

I wish they would just centralize the video review process.  If the color guys can figure out PI from replay while the officials are still huddling then I do not see why the head office could not cover PI, personal fouls, spot of the ball, catch/drop, down/not down in real time.  Get the call right on field as fast as possible.

Having the refs go under that ridiculous curtain to review a play is asinine.

Reviews in baseball to me are the worst.  when did the ball get there, did his shoelace come off the base when he was sliding?  Did the tag come off the shirt slightly while he avoided it?

If you wanted to review anything just have an electronic strike zone.  No gaming it with framing, no umps with reputations for calling stuff inside vs outside.  And it doesn't slow the game down.  Probably speeds it up honestly.

I remember seeing it happen.

I always thought it was a bad idea. I don't know why people wanted it. Officiating is always going to have human error. League needs to have some sort of consequences for bad calls though.   Maybe make officials face the media after a game.

The NFL does NOT want accountability in any fashion on any issue. Just look at the refs, they don’t know the rules, so they make stuff up, tuck rule cough cough, The Refs are not good at what they do, and the league doesn’t care.

The review process in football has gotten away from what it was always intended to be and is now like what you described above.  It was only meant to overturn call which were glaringly obvious upon replay.  The standard described was that the average person in a bar could see that the call was wrong. Now they're zooming in to see if any rubber pellets flew which could indicate a toe grazed the playing surface, fractions of an inch on first down replays, and fractions of a second for possession.  It was meant to be a system where if with a good camera angle on the field the official can't immediately rule then call on field stands, game back on.

Every TD is reviewed too - which can be annoying when the call is no TD then the camera immediately shows that it is a TD.  Guess i have to waste a challenge because the judgement call decided to say otherwise.

I saw this as an almost sure thing about a month ago.

good

I mean its 2 years from the saints getting hosed on that call now... but whats the plan if there's a completely blown call like that again?

Been calling for an NHL style centralized review process for years.

It COULD have been an effective rule if the officials were actually willing to use it objectively. They seemed hell bent on ensuring calls were not changed.

Because these power driven refs and their egos couldn't stand being called out. This won't change the amount of butchered calls we watch.

I think it was more than that. I think they received direction to not overturn a call unless it was as bad as the Robey-Coleman non call.
