Do you think the Bills are going to make a big run at Clowney?

Recommended Posts

The Bills were in on trading for him, but fell short.

Now that he might be free (if Seattle doesn't franchise him)..........

Will the Bills make another strong push for him?

I don’t see it.  I believe that Beane wants to draft and retain and I don’t think that’s lip service.  I just can’t see them shelling out that kind of money for a DE

I think they want a stud DE, but the type of money Clowney wants will probably cause Beane to look at other FAs that may be available.

This might be a good poll...

Remember guys, they did try and trade for him.

Will address UFA stuff after the tag deadline passes. But yes he is an edge and I think Bills will be looking for an Edge in UFA

I guess I'd like you to back up and tell me what you know about the Bills being in on trading for him?

That's kind of where I am.  Teams can use 2 tags this year; wait to see how the tags fly.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the Bills were one of the teams in on trading for him.

that is the exact reason I am holding off. Especially for non-rebuilds (64 tags can thin out that UFA depth very quickly)

I do not like Clowney in Buffalo.

not that opinion should ever set precedent : )

But i feel Bills will find a couple edge guys using more than one method.

Drafting is my hope. and sprinkle in some FA.
Depending on Lawson and Murphy.

Eyes wides open of course.
is this where Bills splash ?

 should be fun : )

Seems to be the consensus around here.

Care to reiterate why though ?

Beane's interest in AB notwithstanding, I think Beane prefers to find his playmakers in the draft and then augment them with solid role players in free agency.  FA superstars like Clowney are almost always overpriced.  While I wouldn't be shocked if Beane sniffs around Clowney, I don't expect him to pony up.

So where is the 90M in space being spent?

think the Seattle deal included a no tag on Clowney so he will up for the highest bidders   I'm sure Beane will at least kick tires.  Honestly want them to dump assets into offense.  Defense is good enough they can resupply through the draft and minor free agents.

no chance

we have so many holes on offense to fill we don't need to be spending a chunk of our cap on an injury prone DE.

No I think the Bills wanted him on the one year 8 million dollar contract to get him in the building and see how he fit in the organization.   This way they could get the full Clowney experience and determine whether they were willing to give him the larger contract.   I dont see them as be in on a guy for 20 million or more they have no real context for outside of Brian Gaine.

Just about everything here is wrong.

They are a team with an inside track if anything—Gaine is the Houston GM that pushed for a Clowney extension and got fired over it.

Yes, they have holes to fill on offense. Do both. They have a TON of cap space.

How many games has he actually missed in the last 4 years?

just like I expect will be the case in free agency, if they fell short, wouldn’t it be because the bidding got too high?

Expect the same to play out in free agency.

Clowney is very good. But he’s probably going to get paid like he is very great.

I don’t see this front office chasing those type deals unless maybe it’s a homegrown guy. (I hope TreD)

Clowney undoubtedly has a ton of talent.  I just don't see him as the type of personality that fits in with what the Bills are trying to build.  They don't want another Marcel Dareus situation.  Big FA contracts can really hurt a team in the long run.  I think that Beane will be thrifty in FA, like last year, and save that cap space to re-sign his own who will be up in the coming years:  White, Milano, Allen, Edmonds, Hyde, Poyer, etc.  If he does spend big dollars on a FA, I believe it will be a guy with big talent who has also has a positive injury history (meaning very few) and demonstrated high-character and leadership skills.  Having said that, those types of guys don't hit FA very often.

If Seattle is smart they slap the transition tag on him and move on.

Given Seattle just gave up assets to get him and the lip service they are all giving on him wanting to be back and them wanting him back he should stay there.
I expect Beane to explore all options. But I don’t expect him to be highest bidder on the highest contracts given this year.
I will leave my opinions on clowney out of this but from a business standpoint he’s a terrible investment on a big contract.
We have money to spend but there’s no reason to dump it into bad contracts.
They could sign 3 good players for the price of clowney.
The debate is we need impact playmakers, clowney is an impact player, but only for 4-5 games a year if you’re lucky.
Not everyone agrees but I think there’s much better production in the lawson/Murphy combo over clowney
