Went to the Rocketman movie two weeks before it came out. I've even argued that he's a better songwriter than any of the Beatles. That said, it's his piano playing, songwriting, and showmanship that helped launch him to fame. His voice isn't terrible, but by his own admission is mediocre at best. He is on Desire and Blood on the Tracks... but for the most part he is what he is, like you said, a great songwriter. I think we all became so familiar with the sound of his voice that it was ok... Great musician, top guitarist, below average singer. Honestly, you have to include Toots Hibbert if you're going to have Bob Marley in there.
