How is given $$$$, stolen?

Plead... "I am indifferent to money."  "I keep no track of it." "Don't give it to me, I won't spend it." Yeah, like that will float.

Now... Get blood out of a stone... Here is your camper back. LoL...

Sleazy bank needs to eat it.  I want to give a someone $5 and mistake the $50 spot in my wallet... The mistake is on me.  Think I am asking for the fitty back?

Banks sure got it stacked against the people... Now they don't even eat their own mistakes. Large amounts should be double checked.

I balance my checkbook at least 3 times/week.  I've been hacked a few times and have learned that the sooner you see something wrong/report it, the better.

If I ever saw a $120,000 uptick in my account, the first thing I'd do would be to call the bank.

This couple new that money wasn't theirs.  They've been charged accordingly and should be prosecuted/ordered to return the money.

BTW... I balance my pittance almost every day. All on cellphone app. Get text alerts, etc...

20 years ago, $2k was added to, Direct Deposited to our account.  Of course I did nothing... Let it sit there for a month.  They caught it and took it out. One of the only times in my life I stayed quiet. And a bank made me do it. ?

Are you the type of guy who finds a 20 dollar bill in the street outside a bar... Then walks into bar, holds it up and says: "Did anyone lose a $20?"  Smooth move Billy Graham!

Anyway... Isn't there a "Chance" card or is it a "Community Chest" card in the board game "Monopoly?" It's called:

"Bank Error!  Collect $200"

I had a bank error which I reported and they repeatedly told me that there was no error, that I withdrew the money.

I gave them signed statement that I was at work with computer verification that I was active at time of withdraw.

They still claimed it was my withdraw.

I emptied my bank account and transferred it another bank with just minimum amount and signed and notarized instructions stating that no electronic transactions were allowed for my account.

Person showed up at bank asking why he could not access "his" account and when cashier said he would talk to manager to find out why manager saw was not same person who gave notarized instructions and told cashier "Tell customer computer error, we are fixing issue."  In meantime he called police and said they had a potential robber there who could become violent. Two plain clothes police came in and the cashier said "Issue is resolved."  when he walked to front of line plain clothes police put him in cuffs.

I got my money back plus interest (wow, less than a dollar) and an apology.  I asked manager if for inconvenience would they waive any bank fees and he said "Of course". So I told him that I was closing account and glad they are waiving fee for closing account early.  He said "that is not what I meant" but allowed it anyways.

Nope.  If I find money on the street, it's mine.  Unless it's something like $120,000.  I'd go to the police if I found that much money.

Former coworker of mine found $100 outside the government building we worked. He turned it in to security and they told him if no one claimed it within two weeks, he could have it. Two weeks later we had a really nice lunch on someone we never met.

Note the reason he turned it in was the same building had social service, DAs Office, etc. so even though it was only $100, it could have been someone’s last $100.

If I was down to my last $100, I Darn well wouldn't lose it.  :wallbash:

I found $50 in a bank envelope in front of my house once, wife put an add in paper stating name the bank and the amount to claim it. All kinds called and asked how much it was . :wallbash:

We ended up spending it

I think it was one of the trash haulers.

Oh, and while doing Highway cleanup with the Boy Scouts last year, three of found $20 each.

If I find $120k on the street, I'm not going to the police.  I'm going straight to the Mob, where it belongs.

My wife was over paid for several weeks because of a clerical error at work. They let her pay it back over the same time period that she received the extra pay. I thought that was decent of them.

If I found $120K in my account, I would tell the bank.  If they don’t fix it, I would hold off using it for quite a while. I would also make sure I could liquify some assets to pay it back.  I am financially able to do that, but not everybody else can say that. I would bet that the people in this story who blew the money on toys don’t have assets they could easily liquify to pay it back, other than the toys they bought with the money.

Reminds me me of those stories of people who win the lottery and are broke within a few years.

My wife found $2 in a grocery store parking lot one time and she wanted to take it to customer service.  $2.  I told her that if she's really that opposed to keeping it, she should just leave it on the ground.

Anyone with an IQ over 50.  Bank is sure as hell going to figure out where $120k went.  Plus, love how these morons spent the money.   An RV?  Gave away $15k to ‘friends’?

In Manhattan, sure.

My daughter found $100 on the sidewalk near our house a couple years ago.  Despite temptation, I did the right Dad thing and we put a notice on the community website.  Sure enough, it ended up belonging to the single lady right across the street.  My daughter got $20 as a reward.

If you followed the link, read the article and the comments, you would have seen the law that this is under.  Theft plain and simple.  They obviously knew it wasn't their's.

Two weeks ago I went to a Walmart self check out.   When I looked down the bill exchange had a multiple bills hanging out of it.  I didn't even touch it.  I called over the attendant and she took it to the area manager.  It was 5, $20's.  The attendant said money is left on the machines quite often.

A week later I was in again and asked her if someone collected the money.   She didn't know as they hand it to the main office.   If no one collects it, they eventually give it to charity.

I understand that.  I know the law is the law.  Probably why we are in the cultural  & societal mess we are in... Why there is no accountability when people see the deck stacked as it is... Leads to even more corrupt attitudes.

Just saying   The law states a lot of things that are truly effed up

The two files I have worked on for this claim in reality had the couple laundering through an account or stashing kickbacks

and when caught said to the media it had to be a bank error, wasn’t their fault, so they are entitled to the funds

I cashed a check about 5 years ago and the teller gave me 100 dollars more than she should have.

I went back to the bank and gave the money back. It wasn’t mine and didn’t want the teller to get into too much trouble.

Months ago, I did Walmart self check out.  Scanned and bagged everything.  Walked out of Walmart with the loaded cart.  Got to my car and realized I never paid.  I went back in.  Spoke to the person at the self checkout area.  She told me to go to customer service.  I went there and explained what happened.

There was a manila envelope on the wall, full of receipts.  She got mine out so I could pay.  I asked her if that envelope was full of receipts from people who walked out without paying.  She told me yes - happens all the time.  She proceeded to tell me that once people leave the store, they're home free.

Boggled my mind.  Since then, they've installed the cameras that record your face as you're checking out.  Hopefully they use that to go after thieves.

Stores often don’t stop people walking out without paying, as policy.

What's the windfall the stores make scanning wrong price?  Do they go back and credit your card, call you?  Say: "Hey come on in and get your cash, your family can use it."

Of course... It's on you to check... It's always on you, never on them.  The game is rigged.

I am not going to break any land speed @Gugny moral high-ground records to tell them their error... They wouldn't if errors were reversed.

In the end, it evens out.

I've had errors that I've let go.  I've forgotten to scan the kitty litter in the bottom of the cart.  I'm all for chalking one up for the good guys.  But $120K is a tad over the line, no?

Save all the interest... Yeah they may have to pay restitution... Probably at a lower interest rate, much lower.  Take out a loan to pay it back... LoL

Ain't usury great!

Yes...

Would it have been bad to just leave it there until they come looking for it while earning interest on it?  LoL...

They'd do the same. No?

That's interesting.  At least once per month, the local Central NY TV station website I go to, has picks of someone who walked out of the store without paying.  The pics they show are usually someone with a television or two. Although the last one they posted looked like it must have been something small and expensive.  When they do this, the date of the walk-out is usually two or three weeks previous.  I always wonder why it takes them so long.

I assume they eventually track these people down.

Best idea I have heard is to take the money and move it to a high interest bearing account.  Whenever they come back for their money give them their money and keep your earnings.  The longer they take the better.

What’s a high interest bearing account?

They should have just gone to the casino and put it all on red.  If they lost they’d be in the same position they are now.
