Some it may take half a season others it takes two seasons. A player will typically get two full seasons if they show flashes of being able to make plays. Teller showed flashes last year he could play in the league. He needs to be more consistent this year. I would be surprised if the Bills didn’t bring in a center, guard, and a tackle through FA and or through the first three rounds in draft. mushypeaches Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 My opinion is that by halfway through the season, there was no harm in putting him into the lineup given the stiffs that we were parading out there on a weekly basis. Frankly, they should have been doing more of this, and earlier, given the outlook on the season. He had his ups, and his downs, which is all that anyone should have reasonably expected. eball Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 I'm no OL guru and I don't break down the play of linemen...that said, I think the best thing you can say about Teller is that he's no longer a rookie (and has a good attitude). He'll get his chance to compete for a starting job but like others have said, that shouldn't preclude Beane from doing anything/everything he can to upgrade the overall line. MrEpsYtown Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 (edited) I actually liked a lot of what I saw from Teller, and honestly I liked what I saw from Ike Boettger in the small sample. Here's the thing though, Ryan Groy and Jordan Mills suck and Dion Dawkins struggled. I think, if you put better players around these guys, we will see better play. But Teller is athletic and really strong and should have been drafted higher than the fifth round. He was a steal there. He is a better prospect than I think a lot of people think. I think he would go in the third round in this draft class, as there are only a handful of guards I like better. That said he is a work in progress. I see this offseason going one of two ways 1. Sign a center like Paradis or Morse and a RT like Williams or James. Having those two guys on the line would set you up with Teller and Long as you guards with a guy like Boettger competing. 2. Sign a guard like Saffold or Quentin Spain and a RT like Williams or James. What that does is forces you to go with Bodine or Long at center and puts Teller/Boettger/draft pick in a three way competition for the right guard spot. It isn't ideal, but playing next to a better RT would help. Obviously you could draft a guy, or trade for a guy like Forrest Lamp. Ideally, you sign Morse/Paradis, Saffold/Spain, and Williams/James, and trade for Forrest Lamp but I am not sure how realistic it is to get a center, guard, and RT in free agency. That would put Teller/Lamp/Long/Boettger/Draft pick in a competition for the RG spot, which is a really good place to be. Dream scenario is getting a center, guard and RT. Something like: LT - Dawkins LG - Saffold/Spain C - Morse/Paradis RG - Lamp/Long/Teller/Boettger RT - James/Williams Edited March 7, 2019 by MrEpsYtown 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
WideNine Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 Needs someone to work on his technique. Particularly hand placement and footwork. That, and probably more lower body strength. Too often he let defenders get into his chest and steer him. The good news is even with bad technique he often had the raw upper body strength to wrestle defenders down. I did see some nastiness in him which I liked but still a work in progress. T master Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 I think with a better O line coach & a good veteran talking in his ear he will work out the guy has the strength he just needs to hone his kraft & you can't do that in one season i hope this year he will show better & his time on the field last yr is invaluable so we all will see but if nothing else i see him sticking around as a good depth option ! Hope we've finally learned the key to winning is QB/OL and we go get studs in the OL With that, I think the whole rest of the team looks better. Nasty Road grader in the run game . Can't block a telemarketer call in the passing game. In fairness his head probably was swimming a bit being put into starting duty as the cupboard was pretty bare. billsfan89 Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 Teller is a 50/50 type player. I think he certainly deserves a shot to win a starting guard position in training camp. He played well at times but also struggled at times. I think ideally the team should find a massive upgrade at one of the guard positions and then draft a guard in round 2 or 3 to compete with Teller for the other guard spot. I don't know if you have any faith in Madden raters, but his overall rating went from 60-something to 75 by season's end while Miller's is a 74.
