Where he surprised me and most everyone else was his ability to make plays with his legs. That being said, his legs are only going to take this team so far(mediocrity). If they are going anywhere with Allen under center, he is going to have to improve a LOT in the passing game. I surmise most folks would judge Bortles a decent backup level of player. If you drafted him in the mid-rounds, that would make him a moderate success. If you drafted him third overall, that feels like a bust. That doesn't mean Bortles would have to have become a top five qb in order to avoid being a bust. I think Andy Dalton level average does that, though even that indicates a miss in terms of where he was drafted. For me, it's dictated by objective level of play. Watched a bunch of film on him predraft and it looked like a lowlight reel if anything. That being said, I haven't watched a bills team offense in the past 10-15 years where they get an offensive penalty and I think to myself (3 and out here we come). After the first pick was announced, I was all in on Allen, mainly because I couldn't stand the other guys. It took a bit for the "crush" to develop, but his performance versus the Jaguars did it. VW82 Posted January 5, 2019 Share Posted January 5, 2019 (edited) I always thought it was tough to get a really good read based on his college experience (outside of him clearly being raw) but looking at it from week one to now, I'm definitely more optimistic than I was. His ability to feel the rush (post snap) is night and day from training camp. Remember the Green Bay game when he was running from ghosts? Or all the throws in the first half of the year where he was milliseconds away from getting sacked because he had no idea he was about to get hit? He's basically Aaron Rodgers now in terms of his sixth sense in the pocket. It's really incredible. I like his on field leadership too. He has a boyish positivity you sometimes see in young people who haven't been jaded yet by life that just seems infectious. He also does a good job leveraging his big plays to help fire up teammates. At the beginning of the year he was a blob of clay. Now you can see the outline of where an NFL QB might one day be molded. It's exciting. OMG Bortles second season, you're da** straight, we'd all be over the moon. Allen'd be the second coming of Jim Kelly crossed with Cam Newton and a dash of Aaron Rodgers thrown in. The Dean Posted January 5, 2019 Share Posted January 5, 2019 Honestly, after the draft, I thought the 1st round QBs went to the best possible team for the team and the player. While I wasn't super hyped about ANY of these QBs I figured one, or two, would pan out--but which one? If I had to pick one for the Bills it was Allen. Big. Great arm. Tough. Athletic. I admit his "inaccuracy" was a bit worse than I anticipated---especially on the short passes. But I still think that's more an issue of timing, anticipation and form, than anything else. I think I've seen major improvements already. But as others have said, he probably isn't a 65% West Coast Offense kind of player. I'm fine with that. So in a nutshell, I was very positive about Allen when he was drafted. I'm even more thrilled seeing his development this year. I think the Bills have found their QB IF he can stay healthy.
