You lost ALL credibility when you reported that you could be considered a “gentleman”. We lost you in the first sentence! PLUS, I offered you $50 CASH money for a $30 debt, and you refused! How are we to take your financial advice on anything? You should work for the government!

Now, I will have you know I have this Venmo garbage, and fully expect to have my related credit card compromised, my credit ruined....and complete financial devastation as a result. Thank you! Rather than a cardboard box, can I live on your back porch?

I get $100 at a time from the ATM and it lasts forever. It’s 99.9% credit card transactions. BTW, most places that say they have a minimum amount for CC sales are in violation of their Merchant Agreements but are trying to keep their merchant fee rates from rising.

lord you are old and cranky!!!! Come live on the porch..been out there all day today !

i do feel bad for the salvation army folks, the kids selling stuff outside a store etc..plenty of times I used to buy stuff or donate the $5 in my pocket...now i dont have that $5

I always try to give to the Salvation Army bell ringers, and I’m mad at myself for this year. I gave to all but one, and I skipped him because I was down to one $20, and I didn’t want to have zero cash. It still bugs me. I used to ring bells when I was younger and learned that when I had my cute young kids with me I got probably 10 times the donations. More money and the kids got to see something positive. At least I didn’t have them making shoes in Vietnam.

I am 56 and seldom have cash save for three places..the casino, OTB, and  gentlemans club...

But a debit card or credit card works at these places too!  Just ‘tap’ the card, or put it in the slot...

I suppose it is possible to live without cash in the days of cell phone wallets.  What do you prefer cash, checks, credit cards, crypto-currency or phone based pay mechanisms?

I ask simply because I am in an airport where the restaurants force you to pay on card.  It does make it easier for the staff as they don’t have to make change for anything.  However, I suspect it also drives up the tabs because there is science that shows when you use plastic you will spend more.

Thoughts?

Simply give me your cash and you won't have any decisions to worry about.

trust me

samsung pay - benefit over apple pay is it isn't owned by the terrible company of apple.  another benefit is it will work at any nearly any credit card machine even if not set up for it.  it just makes the reader think it's a credit card going through with the nfc chip.

i seldom carry my wallet anywhere these days, in fact.  i have my phone with me and took a picture of my insurance cards and license, that if in a pinch, would be of assistance since i seldom carry my license/wallet.

i generally odn't have cash and if i borrow a dollar it could be a month before i come across one to pay you back.

Use a credit card in some form 99% of time..person to person payments all Venmo now..trying  to get some of the old farts on this board like @Augie  or @ExiledInIllinoisto get Venmo was like pulling teeth.

I get $200 out of ATM when i get cash..i would say lasts me about 3 months now on average

I will say you are always willing to lob it up there, waiting for the smash back. You know I cannot do that to you though. ?

(I don't have to since I see @Augie beat me to it. ? )

Always using cash for drugs.

And hookers. Wasn’t Jerry Springer an elected official in Cincinnati who wrote a personal check fior a hooker? Where’s @Seasons1992 for important info like this? (NOT implying you were a pimp at the age of 14 and payed for your season tickets that way, but it would be a great Risky Business kind of tale to tell!)

I wish you had made the poll so you could choose multiple options or with some type of allocation.  It's hard to imagine not having multiple forms of payment at my disposal.

Cash for certain things (paying babysitter), hot dog at the ballgame, etc., but can go a week or more without any in my wallet.

Credit cards are the dominant form of payment for daily expenses.

E-payments for recurring expenses like mortgage, credit cards, utilities, etc.

Checks only for a small handful of expenses (eg, cleaning lady).

Phone payment apps to pay individuals (family, drug dealer, etc)

You know better, the babysitter AND the drug dealer are both cash payments. Leave no record, and for the convenience if your babysitter IS your drug dealer.

Actually the drug dealer here is perfectly legal so we probably used Venmo last time.  And they make house calls!

I never carry much more than $20 on me.  When I'm close to running out, I head to the ATM and get another $20.  The wife is the same exact way.  We actually had a really nice streak going last year where we never went to an ATM for about 6 months.  She's a teacher and they tutor some a couple kids after school for cash.  We set that cash aside in the house (no, not in the mattress) and took a $20 when we needed it.  The whole thing was perfect and I hate that the streak died.

This year we've had the exact opposite from that tutoring gig.  The parent's always pay her with a check so instead of avoiding the ATM all together, we wind up heading to it far more frequently.  I know there are other check cashing options available now, but I'm not on board with those yet.

i enjoy going to the grocery store a few times a year and cashing in a few Big Gulp cups filled with change for $200 after the 9% fee.

I'll load up my pockets with pennies and use all of them at the self cashout machines at any store.  I'm pretty sure that I'm the reason why the machine we have in our office self-serve snack/drink kiosk no longer accepts change.

We've basically eliminated the penny up here, round up or down except on card transactions.

Tips...I travel a lot, so valets, bellman, housekeeping.  I always try to have some cash.    The dispensaries in NV only take cash by the way.

Other than that it's all cards or some form of E-pay...

Always have some cash.  It seems like everyone and their brother has kids, grandkids, and other relations selling raffle tickets, or cash calendars, or fruitcakes.  Few of them have a portable terminal handy to process plastic.

So you've been handed an easy out for these sales and you don't take it?

I get cash back on my credit card, so I use it whenever possible. Two important things: 1) I don't spend more just because I don't see the money exchanging hands, and 2) I pay my entire balance every month so I don't get interest charges.

I usually keep $20-$40 in my wallet, but it's rare that I use it.

Correct!  My interactions with others tend to be limited to those I know.  Therefore it’s more than likely I will support whatever ‘cause’ someone is offering.  If I lived in a large city, I might not carry as much.
