Taron Johnson playing very good ball.

I wouldn't say he's quietly helped the impact; he's been quite noticeable, as evidenced by a couple other threads over the past two or three weeks. Now, if someone could step up and take a hold of the other CB position...

I love the way he plays. He is the most physical corner we have had since Winfield. I hope we have him and Tre for a long time. This secondary is so close to being a special unit. One of those units that gets a nickname and shuts down all the QBs.

This draft class may become one of the best ever if Allen develops and hits the potential of his physical skills.  If Teller becomes a contributor then the first five picks will be solid contributors.

both drafts have been solid since McD, their pro scouting hasn't as good though.

I think the second CB will be very high on McDermott's offseason need list.

I’m hoping Ryan Lewis can become the guy. He’s very raw, but athletic.

I hope so too.  They have added some nice depth with in-season pick ups on defense.  Phillips and Lewis have fit in like a glove.  The defense is clicking on all three levels.  Impressive for the roster turnover on that side of the ball this past offseason.  A lot of new faces have shined in McDermott's defense.  Rookies, free agents and players that were already on the team.  Hughes is playing some of the best ball of his career so far this season.  He's been the poor man's von miller he was a few years ago.  Kyle is still getting in on the action and he looks like the guy who plays santa at the mall.  Everything seems to be working.  I have to credit the coaching staff.  McDermott knows what he wants on in his defensive players and seems to be picking them out of the sky and putting them into place.  It's pretty impressive so far.  I mean, a 5th round pick, a fourth round pick and waiver pick ups are making differences on the field.  Hard to hit on all of that in the time that they've been here.  Hopefully the solid play on that side of the ball continues.

I respectfully disagree that their pro scouting has been lacking.

The Benjamin, Kerley, and Matthews acquisitions at WR have proven to be bad moves. Otherwise, though? Pretty good results, in my opinion.

The additions of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer -- arguably both Pro Bowl level talents who are just entering the prime -- was a master stroke. Star, Trent, Jordan Phillips, Eddie Yarbrough, and Chris Ivory seem to be working out well, too. Even Vlad Ducasse -- the favorite whipping boy of Bills fans -- has played well this year.

In fact, I'd say that all of their pro personnel acquisitions at positions OTHER than WR have worked out anywhere from decent to exceptional. The lack of success finding WR help, however, is cause for concern, based on the fact that the Panthers (from whom Beane came to us) ALSO demonstrated an inability to find quality WRs.

10-11: Bills' CB Taron Johnson on WGR (8:19)

#Bills cornerback Taron Johnson (@Taronj11) joins Howard and Jeremy right now on WGR! Tune in:

Johnson on his first career interception this past Sunday - I just read Mariota’s eyes and I was able to break the route. #Bills

Johnson - When I came here, my goal was to be on the field and help the team. Just wanted to work hard and help the defense. #Bills

Johnson - No matter how I’m feeling, I’m going to go out there and go 100-percent. #Bills

Johnson - I feel like the coaches have done a nice job the past few games. They simplified things, and they want us to go out and play fast and smart. #Bills

Johnson - My goal was always to make the NFL. I know that Weber State is not the biggest of schools, but that was the route I needed to take. #Bills

Yeah I agree. Taron is playing well at nickel CB. I like the way he plays fast, tough and aggressive. Keep him healthy and we have a good CB for the future. Great draft pick for the 4th round.

We should be playing in our nickel defense against Houston 95% of the time. They have no RB on this roster that is a threat.

He's the exact same size (OK, 1/8" shorter) than Tre'.

Weird, I had it in my head that he was about 20 points lighter (a la Nickel Robey). Well, I trust SM on defensive backs. If he feels that Johnson is best in nickel, then that's fine by me.

To the contrary, Lamar Miller will be back this Sunday. He and Alfred Blue are a pretty good tandem.

Blue is so slow and is average at best. Miller has some talent but it has not materialized into him taking over games. I wouldn't be surprised if Foreman is the starting RB once he is cleared to play. The goal this week should be to take away Hopkins at all cost.

Also if there is one O-Line that is worse than ours it's the Texans. Bring that nickel CB on a few well timed blitzes, the Texans O-Line will crumble if anything out of the ordinary is thrown at them.

Yeah, I also thought he was 5'8" and 175# or so.  And I agree on trusting SM but was wondering if he's just getting his feet wet before moving him opposite Tre'.

Oh come on!  Many "experts" here at TBD disagree Bill    ;)  ;)  :D

I think he will stay at nickel. His skillset is perfect for that spot.

Ideal.

We shouldn't move him to DB2 while he's developing, and especially while he's performing at an exceptional level for what was given up to draft him. The FA DB class has some solid names coming up, and while it's not an immediate need, having that stud DB2 to anchor our secondary would be great to see. Johnson could nickel/slot and also help with depth should we need it. No reason to overshoot the guy just yet.

This defense is a CB2 and an edge rusher (Jerry ain't getting any younger) away from being set completely -- at least as far as starters go.

I sincerely hope that most of our free agency dollars and draft picks are spent on offense this coming offseason.

i wonder if they are thinking about Hassan reddick at all

I don't know. They are getting consistent pressure. Hughes is elite imo. Criminally underrated. Murphy is coming along nicely, great motor and Lorax is rated as one of the best edge defenders through 5 weeks according to pff. Lawson back , can play de or dt , we quietly have a deep , talented DL.

Exactly. Can't force him outside .

A nickel is an extremely important position nowadays though , kid is a flat out steal. I saw it from Training camp.

How Taron Johnson's 'bulldog mentality' is serving him and Bills defense well

wtxkhn3y6waxckcijszr.jpg

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott feels as though it takes a “special type of player with a special mindset” to play the nickel cornerback position.

Though he’s only four games into his professional career, Taron Johnson has already proven that he fits the bill.

Johnson has shined in the slot when healthy this season, standing out as a young defensive cornerstone that the Bills can look to build around.
