Anybody Else Find Themselves Less and Less Interested in the NFL?

I don't watch ESPN or NFL Network and mostly just follow Bills news about 20-30 minutes per week.  I find that the NFL has morphed into soap opera/wrestling, and for whatever reason fans eat it up.  I can't stand the politicization of everything, the over production of the story lines, the worshipping of big markets, and the inconsistent referees/rules.

I used to watch almost every game when I was single.  After the Bills game, I wanted to see other teams play.

Well, in the last few years, I got married and had a kid.  I just don't have time to keep up with the NFL like I used to.  I get the Bills every game, my wife knows that's mandatory.  

Sundays are now just Bills games.  I get my info about the rest of the NFL basically on this site and ESPN/NFL.com

I usually wait till the first 3-4 games have been played, then maybe I'm not so interested?

Id feel the same way if it wasnt for fantasy football and draft kings. 

 

They make you watch games you normally wouldnt be interested in...and hey....it could turn out to be a good football game too. 

 

I will always be interested in a good football game.

I could wax on about all the stuff I don't like about the "modern" game but the primary reason I'm less interested...

 

Priorities change as you get older and you choose to do different things with your Sunday afternoons and your time overall.  

 

For example,  if its a beautiful Sunday afternoon in fall, there's 0% chance of me being parked in front of a television or in a bar.

I don't give a **** about the anthem protests. While I'm not the biggest fan of the new rule changes, it hasn't turned me off completely to the NFL. I just find myself less enthused to watch NFL football than I used to be. Even my fantasy players I usually just check the stats online. Anybody else feel this way?

It's ONLY my love for the Bills, sparked as a 5 or so yr old when I--unlike everyone else I was watching with--wanted the team currently losing the Super Bowl (Bills down to Cowboys) to win. I'm more removed from the game emotionally, but only as it pertains to the other teams and the NFL as a whole (excluding the Bills). Feel the same way about the Sabres.

Actually, after years without cable TV and 17 years of no playoffs I hadn't watched much TV at all but now after ending the drought and drafting Josh Allen I can no longer go without football, just signed a 2 year contract with the cable company, I'm pumped for the Bills and NFL football.

I watch every Bills away game and have attended every Bills home game since I was 14 years old (I'm 59 now), so my passion for the Bills is greater than ever.  But like the original poster, I don't watch many of the other games even though I've been running my Fantasy League since 1982.  And again like the original poster, I've replaced my NFL diet with the college game.  Saturday nights are THE BOMB!! Can't wait til Notre Dame - Michigan next Saturday and then Pitt-Penn State the week after.  Some Saturday nights there's 3 or 4 really good games to tune into, especially when you consider the late starts on the West Coast with Stanford, USC, UCLA, etc.

 

Two things have really irritated me about the NFL in recent years - 1) the Anthem protests.  I could care less. Donald Trump, Rachel Maddow, Sean Hannity -- please stay away from my Sundays!!! Let me watch the damn game!!!!!   And 2) The Catch Rule.  If it looks like a catch, if it smells like a catch, if it talks like a catch .  If every fan in that stadium thinks its a catch. If every ref on that field thinks its a catch.  If everyone watching at home thinks its a catch.  ITS A DAMN CATCH!!!!!!!! End of story!!!!!!!  I could care less what some guy sitting in a TV studio analyzing every frame millisecond-by-agonizing-millisecond thinks -- ITS A CATCH!!!

Nope.  Just as strong as ever.  It's my favorite sports league of any kind.  I have spoken with some people who turned away from the NFL because of the anthem stuff and I just shake my head.

No I love football as much as ever, if not more. I don't care about any other sports. I'll go to Sabres games occasionally, otherwise I don't really watch them. Baseball and basketball bore me. Football is unlike any other sport, the way every position is so different from what every other position is doing. I have to admit I'm addicted.

Maybe a little bit. As someone else pointed out, it may just be the product of maturity and understanding the business side of it a little bit more. Usually have ball games going all day every Sunday in the fall.

 

I think what has changed most is my respect for the guys that play this game. When I was younger it was easier to be like, "Oh man, Player A is a piece of crap, he gets paid to make that play and he misses? He's garbage, get someone else in there!" And now it's just much easier to understand that they're all human beings trying their best. None of them are perfect and seeing some fans get so insanely upset over certain things just boggles my mind. Obviously I want my team to win, I want the players on my team to succeed and have awesome games every time they take the field, but if that doesn't happen I'm not gonna let it ruin my day or cause me to throw my remote at the wall. That type of behavior gets so old and obnoxious after a while.

 

I'm obviously not as vested in other games as I am for Bills games but I can definitely sit down and watch two other teams face off and enjoy it. Really, this era of football is probably the greatest ever, just because of how the sport has evolved. I mean, how many active players are we watching right now that are surefire Hall of Famers? Probably a record number. And we're seeing records broken or set almost every season. It's a good time to be a fan of the game.
