What is your #1 QB performance metric?

I like yards as an option but I think I'm biased because we haven't even had a 300 yard game in a while. I could start with yards then dig deeper.

I also think interceptions are overrated as a negative metric. This became so obvious to me last year when we would have 2nd or 3rd and long from midfield, but Tyrod would just throw it to Tolbert for a few yards. In that case taking a shot downfield and throwing a pick inside the opponents 20 is equivalent to a good punt.

I don't know about overrated, but I think "low interceptions" by themselves aren't very meaningful.  It needs to be looked at in context of how many YPA a guy gets and how many TD he throws.  A guy could throw 16 INTs a season and if he's also throwing >32 TD, it's probably OK.  If he throws low INT, but also low YPA, it could be he just takes the safe checkdown throw all the time.  If he throws 16 INT but only 23 TD (Bortles 2016) or 15 TD (Osweiler 2016), That's Bad.

I agree. I guess by overrated I was referring to the national media overrating Tyrod for not throwing ints. Also, the situation I mentioned where the int doesn't actually hurt the team at all. If a QB throws a pick on 3rd and 15 from the 50 yard line trying for the end zone and the other team gets the ball at the 10 it shows up the same as a pick on 1st and 10 from your own 20 on the stat sheet. I'm guessing some QBs have a tendency to throw "better" interceptions but i haven't looked into it.

!@#$s given.

The fewer !@#$s given, the better.

Look at EJ:  that man gave soooooooooooooo many !@#$s about everything.  He cared about the optics.  He fell asleep reading his play book!  And he was awful.

Conversely, look at Kyle Orton:

See the source image

This man gave ZERO !@#$s.

"eyeball test."  i watch how they move  what their ball placement is like.  if you watch a lot  you can just look and see that a guy is good because you have seen it before i  when i watch Josh Rosen I think of

YOu think of this right:

Hate. ;)

100% agree.

Hate comes with establishment though.

Which, poses an excellent question of what it is prior to establishment.

I'll straight up say, I dont have one. I dont know.

I was one of the people very high on Christian Hackenburg for example. I was hoping and thought he might have a bit of Manning's mind and being cerebral was a big part of it. I figured the rest could be learned, but that ability to be a field general at the line could be something that puts a guy over the hump. Man.. I was wrong.

So I dont know anymore. Now I guess I just watch as much as I can find on them and try to judge based on NFL throws and who seems to be good at what the pro game would be like. That's also very tough because you can dominate at the college level and those NFL traits might not be able to be judged bc the opportunity never presents itself.

From there I think guys kinda remind me of pros. I could be dead wrong and prob am - but I see a lot of Rodgers and Ryan in Rosen... which is why I want him so bad. Watching Darnold is totally different but as people have said - he has a little Favre to him... but it's all not on display yet.

Oddly, there are no stats involved... but I'm also done pretending I know a damn thing about how these guys turn out. I just know what I like and what I dont and keep an open mind.

I'm all about reading coverages and passing into windows with anticipation. Going through progressions, processing information. I want the ball out, before receivers come out of breaks. Then you have to have the arm strength to drive the ball in there. If you can do those two things, you will be a successful quarterback. A guy who can do those things can beat any defense.

I guess it really isn't a metric, but that's what I want.

Wife.

How hot is the wife.

If she's like a 7-8/10 then he's probably happy and won't be chasing tail off the field and distracted.

If she's. 9-10/10 though she's probably too hot and just riding him for the $$, so you get a wife chattering in the ear like tidwell's wife in Jerry McGuire.

Mine is passing yards.

Here's my reasoning. I cannot think of a QB who throws for a ton of yards who was not at least a decent NFL starter.

If you throw for a ton of yards, that means you are moving your team down the field. The offense is working. Things are happening. Plays are being made in the passing game.

All of that means you have a foundation to build on. If it's a Carson Palmer type situation where the guy throws for 300+ all the time but also 3 INT you can try to work on that ans cut those picks down with coaching. At least the guy has proven able to move the sticks and get skill positions involved in the game. Stafford is a lot like this too. the guy throws for a ton of yards but also turns it over a bit too much.

Lots of bad QBs had a great completion %. Think trent with the Bills (he forever gets the lower case for prancing out of bounds without a care in the world on a 4th down play with the game on the line in GB).

Lots of Bad QBs have thrown for a surprising number of TD. Blake Bortles was right behind Tom Brady for the 2016 season in TD passes. But he stinks.

I always come back to yards, because it means the QB is playing the game. His job is to distribute the ball and move the team down the field, and yards are proof that he is doing that.
