dave mcbride Posted September 16, 2016 Share Posted September 16, 2016 It's because for two straight games and for a good portion of last season the offense couldn't do the basic things that pro teams should do. From a management's standpoint, the major things that felled the defense - communication, responsibilities and play calls were addressed and showed signs of improvement in the first two games. The offense has gone in reverse, with no apparent improvement to the things that went wrong last year. Not saying that Rex is guilt free, but if I'm scoring a unit based on preseason expectation, the offense has to take the fall. GG, the defense was absolutely terrible last night. And let's not forget that the Jets have a good defense! Re Roman, I stand by my argument that he's a better-than-average OC who gets good production out of offenses with limited QBs. "And when they’re not, it affects the players. And unfortunately, the NFL doesn’t have all good teachers. There are a lot of guys who have coached and have ‘OC’ by their name—it doesn’t mean they can teach. Usually you can tell if a quarterback’s being developed right by what his eyes and feet are doing. That offense doesn’t have a real flow to the passing game. The feet and the eyes don’t always match what’s going on downfield. That’s not a Tyrod Taylor issue. That’s a coaching issue.” which also brought in critique from Billick: "Dilfer's old coach with the Baltimore Ravens, Brian Billick, hinted at this point on our panel two weeks back, saying "It’s what’s being called and the way they want to play it. So it’s two different conversations: Is he (Taylor) operating within the offense and can they win that way vs. is he (Taylor) going to be a legitimate, elite, upper-echelon quarterback?” Now whether Anthony Lynn can fix anything wrong there at this point in the season, who knows? They gave up on the fool's errand of trying to patch together a couple free agents or a stretch of a draft pick at QB in a vain attempt to go 9-7 and squeak into the playoffs. They tore it down and are starting from scratch. So we are the Browns of 2014 ... still a year away from awareness that we're not just one WR or one run-stuffing MLB away from making the playoffs. The Browns 2014 was really a Bills 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.... and so on.... Sure, why not Do you think Rex was going to allow his brother to be fired? Dream on! There is little talent to build around on the roster. Think about it. Who can you build around that will be here in 2-3 years? Watkins can't stay healthy. Dareus is an addict. Gillmore is gone as a FA. Taylor is a stop-gap QB. The rest will follow. Taylor so accurate downfield. Horror show everywhere else. Having trouble thinking of another QB like that. The short pass over the middle to McCoy was the worst. And that's the point. The offense was better than average and the expectation was for it to improve. But it regressed with multiplying mistakes. That is concerning because everyone was back and the scheme wasn't changing. Look at the criticism on this page before 1PM. Most of it had to do with the offense being unprepared and unimaginative. The criticism of defense is that the players got beat one on one, but mostly the players were in the right spot at the right time. The lack of hustle resulting in DOG penalties and wasted TO's, the inability to install a REAL 2-minute offense, and a long litany of other issues like lack of pre-snap motion, non-sensical pass game design (no slants, real screens, 7 yd patterns on 3rd and 10, etc.), inability to get the ball to Sammy, etc. Roman just didn't measure up. I agree the Bills didn't go far enough, Rob and Rex should have also been gone. But we're a complete tire fire, and only a complete housecleaning, top to bottom, is going to put out that fire. Lol no. Tyrod did not let him down. Roman's inability to call a modern offense was the problem. It won't change by next Sunday but at least Rex is on his way out.
