Well, free agency is essentially over now with all of the solid options long gone. Miller has quite the hill to climb to become even average on top of not being an injury puppy. That's a lot to ask any no one should have much faith in that situation re: him. He played so poorly last season and for sure massively inconsistently.

I have quite a bit of doubt that he'll ever blossom into much more than a backup G. There's absolutely nothing concrete to suggest otherwise.

You say "let's wait and see what they do to improve this position over the next few weeks before we pass judgement."

Like what? What can they do? Be specific.

Is there a free agent G out there that we can afford with a proven history of solid starting?

I don't see what they can do. We have what we have. If they have extra cap money they need to put it towards Gilmore's contract.

We could afford either Vasquez, or Evans, and either would be an upgrade- obviously. And, FA is not over. There will be cuts from other teams. That will happen. But, really, my main point was that O-linesmen don't often shine in their first year, and the best in the business are usually older (by NFL standards), late twenties, early thirties. Addressing the issue in the draft, IMO, would not likely have helped out our line this season. I don't fault Whaley and Rex for not going after rookie OLs. Miller is a good example. He was a stud in the preseason, but faltered during reg season games. And, I disagree with your assessment of him. I think there is every reason to believe that he has not reached his ceiling, and will be improved from last year. Just his emotional issues alone were a significant obstacle to his development. What else would we be looking for in terms of something "concrete" to suggest that he would be improved from last season?

I have Crohn's. A pretty bad case. Have had 5 surgeries. I had the two he had. The last surgery was 16 years ago. Since then I have done pretty well and have been an active participant in sports.

There are many ways to treat Crohn's. The problem is finding the one that works for you. If he has found the correct one, he can play, with no loss in effectiveness. It's way too early to know his immediate outcome.

Wow. Thanks for this. I was only going on my own ability to google, which, I do understand, does not make me an expert (although, there are those who seem to think otherwise!).

Crohn's can be difficult to diagnose correctly from everything I understand.

It can be. I expect it's harder with a football player, where pain, even severe pain, weight loss, etc, may be pretty common during the season. "When you hear hoofbeats don't think of zebras".

But it also sounds like it was missed until it got very severe. People newly diagnosed with Crohn's don't necessarily need hospitalization and 2 surgeries right off the bat.

I would have to think the medical staff recommended that he see a GI specialist and were involved in his care throughout since he's an active Buffalo Bill.

Henderson was hospitalized after the Eagles game and I believe diagnosed there, so he would have been plugged in to the GI department at that point. We don't know how it went down, but certainly for a non-football-related disease condition, he's not required to involve Bills medical staff in his care or follow their recommendations, and if he felt he was misdiagnosed, he may not want to.

When Whaley was interviewed on WGR last week he referred to Henderson being in the RT competition. Based upon that it seems as if he knew what was going on. I think it's highly possible that Rex knew too, but didn't want to discuss his medical condition. Nevertheless, the coaches are at fault for not reaching out to him.

I don't know the rules on this - I know coaches aren't supposed to have contact with the players in the off-season. Can they call just to say 'how's it going, keep your spirits up'?

Whether or not Rex knew, he handled it in the media poorly. If he just didn't want to discuss it, he should have said so and not made it sound as if Henderson was AWOL or snubbing him.

How many times have the Nabob's from the news trashed the front office at One Bills Drive? How many times? How many different writers?

Henderson's agent had to reach out to Tyler Dunne? are you kidding me? A supposedly professional writer at a supposed big city newspaper did not even call his agent before classifying him as AWOL?

What utter incompetence- somehow this will be Rex or Whaley's fault though-

I'm not sure why you make the assumption Dunne didn't reach out. In fact, he did:

"Messages left for Henderson and Henderson’s agent, Alan Herman, were not initially returned though Herman called back later Monday..."

Shame on the Bills organization--kid wasn't AWOL from Bills--the staff of Bills was AWOL from the kid (from top to bottom). At a time when he could have probably used a lift from the FO after up what he's been through. Seems a little like scapegoating this kid which would be as low as you could sink. I hope I'm missing something here about NFL restrictions that didn't allow them to make contact or to let us know they were on the scene and no need to expect the worst, etc..

And, what makes this worse is that this was one of the few and far between feel good stories we've had (next to Incognito's LGBT Sensitivity Award).

(no time for the PFF link anointing him in the same manner)

Regardless, speaks volumes that the medical staff of the Bills missed this one--bring back Quincy!

Direct quote from Rex.

Direct quote from Rex, but maybe Roman or Kromer reached out to Henderson and relayed information to Rex. Maybe the Bills medical staff filled them all in. Maybe they didn't feel the need to talk about a non football medical condition of one of their players.

We are trying to provide oversight and criticism for a coaching staff when we don't have 95% of the picture, flipping the unknown pieces to a negative and assuming incompetence. Kind of like some were doing with the medical staff until it was disclosed, that they are indeed in contact with him. Negative piece flipped back over because it is known now.

So you write a complete BS story? Create the AWOL player story? Are you serious?

So he supposedly reached out and the agent did not return his call right away so now he is AWOL?

Turn anything you can into the most negative story possible-

Wait. Let me get this straight. Our source for Rex's actions or non-actions is the Buffalo news?

really? That's our source?

from what I can tell, the source is Henderson's agent. Only quote from anyone else is Rex who said he hadn't talked to him since the end of the season. Neither he nor any of the coaching staff, nor the player himself, have said that no members of the coaching staff tried to reach out to him. It's certainly possible that no one did, but seems that a 3rd party source is the only one who has said that

I don't know about outrage but wouldn't a competent HC have a semblance of a clue about this?

It figures you turn this into yet another Rex indictment. Rex knowing is not the same as Rex speaking publicly about whether not not he has been in contact with the player.

I am so happy I was wrong. I just didn't see being able to recuperate that fast from two GI Resections, and the placement of two anastomoses (the connection point of the non-rejected tissue) as well as the wasting from the disease. That is truly remarkable. Mayo is one of the best medical facilities in the US, so he made a very good decision to go with Mayo.

I'm really happy for the guy and truly hope he can handle the physical rigors of training camp.

Hasty generalization says Rex didn't talk to Henderson, but it doesn't mean no one did. We have rushed to a conclusion with insufficient evidence or facts. One fact (Bills medical) became apparent, and changed our conclusion. Rex didn't talk to Henderson, but any further speculation has no basis in facts or evidence.

Ty Dunne has been the best FA signing by any Buffalo organization over the past year. Don't be so sensitive, he's class.

Rex strongly implied he knew nothing in an interview. Rex directly said he hadn't spoken with Henderson. Henderson's agent directly stated that he had not spoken to anyone on the coaching staff. Does it realistically seem more plausible to you that:

A. Rex knows everything necessary and has a plan for Henderson.

B. Rex is clueless and disorganized when it comes to knowing what to do with Henderson

C. Something else....please describe.

I realize none of us "know" the situation. I'm just asking which is most likely.
