Big Blitz
Good spot for this considering the goals of the people that want to take down statues are Maoists: Abimael Guzman, founder of Peruvian rebel group Shining Path, dies at 86 LIMA, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Abimael Guzman, leader of the Shining Path rebels who nearly toppled the Peruvian state in a bloody Maoist revolution, died on Saturday while in prison and following several weeks of poor health, the government said. He was 86. Guzman was captured in 1992 in Lima and jailed for the rest of his life after being convicted as a terrorist. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/abimael-guzman-founder-peruvian-rebel-group-shining-path-dies-86-2021-09-11/ The Shining Path on human rights per wik: "We start by not ascribing to either the Universal Declaration of Human Rights or the Costa Rica [Convention on Human Rights], but we have used their legal devices to unmask and denounce the old Peruvian state. [...] For us, human rights are contradictory to the rights of the people, because we base rights in man as a social product, not man as an abstract with innate rights. "Human rights" do not exist except for the bourgeois man, a position that was at the forefront of feudalism, like liberty, equality, and fraternity were advanced for the bourgeoisie of the past. But today, since the appearance of the proletariat as an organized class in the Communist Party, with the experience of triumphant revolutions, with the construction of socialism, new democracy and the dictatorship of the proletariat, it has been proven that human rights serve the oppressor class and the exploiters who run the imperialist and landowner-bureaucratic states. Bourgeois states in general. [...] Our position is very clear. We reject and condemn human rights because they are bourgeois, reactionary, counterrevolutionary rights, and are today a weapon of revisionists and imperialists, principally Yankee imperialists. — Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path, Sobre las Dos Colinas

Buffarukus
i see time and again in this thread if you are against a statues removal then you are automatically FOR the person or ideas it represents. what a narrow way to approach this topic. its true, some see statues as a tributes, while other see them as a reminder. there's a difference. then there are those that wish to see neither. whichever one you see tells me who you are and what you stand for. i like that alot better then hiding ones intentions secretly. but this country is now about FEELING safe and virtuous. so the third option is what we get. im curious. should people want to see the pyramids removed? they were built by slaves, correct? dont look into what the mayan temples were used for. get the tnt and demo crew ready now. funny how millions of tourist come to see it. so many bigots who agree with sacrificial murder of slaves! how about the remnants of Auschwitz? why do jewish people want that place to stand? i can keep going on and on since humans, all of them, come from brutally violent backgrounds. wouldnt it be nice just to bury it all and act like it never happened. to learn history from a story. one that can be changed at will. no need for the actual physical remnants. ill just take your word for it. 🙄 i wonder what future generations should never be reminded of? all the oppressive culture we are in right now. a history that included a bunch of entitled people who typed out arguments on little boxes they obtained from slave/child labor. that's just the tip of the iceberg. we should probably save our grand children time and energy and ask to be buried in unmarked graves now. B-Man
It's just about "Confederate Generals"....... I f you object you must support slavery -- Liberal geniuses. Per the New York Post, the city’s Public Design Commission has listed “the long term loan” of the 1833 painted plaster statue of the author of the Declaration of Independence to the New York Historical Society on its “consent” agenda for Monday. Doing so means that removal of the statue will not be up for public debate. Instead, members of the commission will vote on the statue’s removal once they’ve reviewed public comments. Those comments should be…interesting. The Jefferson statue was gifted to the city in 1834 by Uriah Phillips Levy, an officer of the Navy, and passed to the historical society by way of an “indefinite” loan. The statue is expected to be removed by October 21st. Unfortunately, New Yorkers will have to wait another few months to say the same about de Blasio. https://www.outkick.com/mayor-de-blasio-calls-for-removal-of-thomas-jefferson-statue/

So maybe he’s not someone who should be venerated in that location. Or, perhaps the veneration should tell the whole story, namely, that he was a timeless political theorist, that he bravely prepared the Declaration of Independence, that the nation is indebted to his courage and loquaciousness, and that, in his view, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were not available to almost all African-Americans in that time. Either way, I believe in the choice as to who we venerate. And somebody chose not to venerate Thomas Jefferson anymore. Such is life. This is what you get when you apply different standard of behavior and morality to another time. The Aztecs sacrificed prisoners. The Romans were ruthless and brutal. By today's standards many historical figures and leaders can be judged harshly. The Taliban of today are brutal savages but their behavior is pretty consistent for what you'd expect a thousand or so years ago. Like most things morality and ethics are conditional and subject to change. I'd suggest if you had the ability to travel back in time and attempted to impose today's moral and ethical standards like in Jefferson's era they wouldn't understand or comprehend what you're talking about. The entire concept of "racism" would likely be incomprehensible to most. You'd likely be seen as an oddly acting fool. So today's moral thinkers characterize historical figures in a different more critical light. The same morally superior crew that chooses to cantonize George Floyd. Somebody that can also be portrayed as the patron saint of home invasion. A guy that held a gun to a pregnant women's stomach and threatened to kill her and her unborn child unless she cooperated. A career criminal and drug addict that apparently by chance happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with some unhinged cop chocking the life out of him. Not exactly a heroes death. Both the moral and ethical crowd are perfectly willing to overlook his transgressions towards others to make their political point in our time. I can only hope and imagine that 50 years from now people will be wondering what kind of insanity griped the country during this era. And tear down memorials to a career criminal.
