Play fundamentally sound. Don't make mistakes, force your opponent to earn everything. With that approach, it leads to fairly conservative play on both sides of the ball. But really, in todays NFL, if you aren't dictating the terms, you're behind the eight ball.

So......limiting penalties (which have been atrocious for us this year), play fundamentally sound (like actually making a tackle, which has been horrendous for us this year), and forcing your opponent to earn everything (like always giving up huge chunk yardage in the air and rushing, which has also been horrendous for us this year) is not really the identity that we should be aspiring to.

Also, this "bend, but don't break" D is more like "bend over and take it".........which to me, is the true identity to this team.

Lackadaisical. From ownership to the front office to the coaching staff to the players. Everyone is buddies and it's Shakir's turn to bring orange slices and kool-aid to the next game

I see it as the opposite of lackadaisical tbh

We've decided to minimize what we do best in an attempt to make up for areas where we're deficient. It's zero margin for error football and the reason it feels like we're always one play away from tipping into mediocrity is because we basically are

Honest question.......

What is our team identity?

I mean, we're not a run first or pass first team. We're not a down your throat running team. We're not a finesse passing team. We're not field stretchers.........and on D, we're not aggressive, we're not "in your face", we're not tough, etc.

"Taking what the defense gives us" is not an identity, it's a system.

I have tried to figure out an identity to describe this team and how it plays and i have no clue.

Our team philosophy is "protect our defense from being exposed at all costs."

We don't want to get in shootouts where our defense could potentially look bad, even when we have the best QB in the league. So, we run a boring, clock chewing system on offense to limit both teams' possessions, despite that undermining our own ability to rack up points.

We don't want the defense to have to step up in the face of adversity. So, potential turnovers are avoided at all costs, even if it shackles said QB and neuters his greatest gifts.

We don't want our defense to ever feel undermanned. So, we dedicate the lion's share of our assets and draft capital and cap space to constantly re-tooling that side o the ball, while we ask said QB to run through linebackers in week 5 in order to generate offense because he's playing with Fisher-Price weapons.

The weird thing is that the defensive identity and the offensive identity are opposites. On defense it's "prevent big plays, force the opponent to be efficient and mistake-free." On offense it's "be efficient and mistake-free, don't hunt big plays." In other words we've tried to build the exact style of offense that our defense is designed to force the opponent into. Very bizarre.

Best QB in the world.
Top 5 RB in the league.

An OC who calls cutesy plays when you need a yard despite having the above mentioned players.

A defensive genius of a head coach who old lacks one thing: being able to coach a defense.

Coversative on both sides of the ball,  play not to lose and it's been that way since Dabol left and McDermott made sure his offensive cordinator ran the ball and threw short passes

McDermott has his cordinator is using Allen like we have Trent Edwards at QB,  in years past we would have big chunk plays  and scored points which forced other teams into playing catch up and one dimensional

Close games do not work well with our defence

You mean playing not to lose or conversative on both sides of the ball

Completely mediocre, soft roster trying to get a championship with the least possible amount of effort/risk. It’s not going to work. You can only play so many perfect, risk free football games.

Building your team w the intent of limiting possessions when you have a QB who accumulates TDs at the best rate in league history

It's just such a limp approach

This goes back to the conversation we had earlier in the SB, boring.
