EDIT: Ollie Gordon II...rookie, 6'1, 225lbs. I thought that too in the moment, but he had 9 carries for 38 yards. I felt like Hill was destroying us, but he went 5 for 49. His longest catch was 19 yards and he only had 13 YAC. Dalton Kincaid, in contrast, had more catches (6), yards (66), and YAC (43) on four fewer targets. For as frustrated as we all were at the defense, they kept the game in front of them for the most part. 6 Quote

Pass rush needs a little help in the form of pass coverage. Playing soft zone due to secondary personnel doesn’t help the rush at all. I can’t fault the coverage schemes too much as Miami has receivers that can kill you over the top and McD has sought to take that away every time we play them and quite successfully. Miami planned for this and sought to force us to lose discipline as they played short ball most of the game. The fact they were at a negative average depth per pass late into the first half bore this out. Heck, they were still just a little over three yards average depth late in the third quarter and didn’t get to over five yards, still well short of their average coming in, until late in the game when we backed off even more. And I think it’s worth noting that on several of the passes Tua hurt us with were when he was uncharacteristically extending plays with his feet and forcing DBs to hold coverage far longer than any DBs can be asked to hold coverage. chris heff Posted September 20 Posted September 20 (edited) I’ve said this before, it’s been three games. They have some new guys and some rookies playing, can we give this group a chance to gel? Why do some of you think they can just make a trade? To trade you have to have a trading partner. Edited September 20 by chris heff 2 5 Quote

skibum Posted September 20 Posted September 20 A lot has been said about what is needed on defense. Despite all the leaks, I have actually been impressed with how well they have come through at critical times, with big plays and key stops despite having a lot of likely starters on the shelf. I think once more guys are healthy, things will get better with the existing roster, though Safety still seems dicey. It's also only been three games, not enough for me to believe hot takes like that Rousseau is no longer any good, etc. It's hard to pick on the offense at all. I think we expect them to score a TD on every drive now, but that's a lot to expect in the NFL. By more reasonable measures, they look like a well-oiled machine up and down the roster. Overall, this is a really deep team and I think realistically, it would be hard to improve on it much aside from upgrading at Safety. They are 3-0 for good reason. 1 1 Quote

Nobody is giving away a Randy Moss in his prime, and I think this is less of a problem than some people make it out to be. I’m looking forward to seeing this play out this season so we’ll have a better idea of how active we need to be in the offseason, but for now I think we’ve got our WR room set. Keep running the ball effectively and we will get our shots downfield in time. 1 Quote

Well, THAT was fun! You do the best you can with what you have, and you never have everything you want. Yes, we have some thin spots for sure, but overall I like our roster and potential. 2 hours ago, OldTimer1960 said: 3 games into the season, 3 rookie DL and two FA DL on suspension - I think things will improve as the rookies gain some experience and Hoecht and Ogunjobi return. This team is 3-0 with multiple injuries and suspensions on defense, yet in the last two games they’ve allowed a combined total of 430 yards. The defense was always going to start slow and get better as the season progresses. 1 Quote

But if there is no pass rush, the dbs are naked on an island. It's the Dlines responsibility to do their job first. Very rarely do you get coverage sacks. And of course our 3 tech Oliver, who is graded #1 in pro football, sprained his ankle in practice. Hopefully he will be close to 100% when he returns, said return complicated by 2 games within 8 days of his injury. Quote
notpolian Posted September 20 Posted September 20 The "depth chart" on the Bills site says Shaq Thompson backs up Milano in the base defense. Does that mean he would play outside LB in the base nickel? I'd like to see how things would look with him and Milano out there in nickel, but if he don't have the dot maybe that's not possible. All teams generally dance with the ones who brung ya. I would love to see these young guys develop. Would love to see Solomon getting worked in more at end. Maybe rotate Ray Davis in for full series, like last year. Get Hancock and strong more playing time. 2 Quote

Yeah, but I just pulled off a league-altering trade in my dynasty league after two weeks - managed to get Jaxon Smith-Njigba for two firsts and a second. I’ve been in the finals six straight seasons and won four of them. Losing in the finals last year left a bad taste. If I can make moves like this, why can’t Beane? Clearly, he doesn’t want to win as badly as I do. Edited September 20 by JGMcD2 1 1 Quote
HappyDays Posted September 20 Posted September 20 I'm a broken record at this point but I still think a field stretching WR is the one missing piece to take this offense to another level. Curtis Samuel is currently the least important player on the roster so it would be an easy replacement. Would the Saints be willing to part with Rashid Shaheed? He's on a 1 year deal and their season is going nowhere. Give them back Samuel and a 5th, or something like that. 2 1 1 Quote

billsfan89 Posted September 20 Posted September 20 Hard to say, week 1-2 are almost extended pre-season and Thursday games are funky. So I think the Bills will have to really get more games in to see what any trade deadline needs are. I think Safety remains a big concern but seems like the tandem has settled down after that terrible start. Once again not sure what’s happening on a more granular level there. Defensively in general Mad Max and the PED twins come back so there’s reinforcements coming. I think offensively WR could be an issue if Keon isn’t a bit more consistent but I can’t see any major moves there. Quote
