I apologize if this is talked about in another thread, however, I thought Elam showed his true colors last night and at times, even demonstrated timidity which was probably driven by his fear of making a mistake. What say you?

Every defender was 10 yards off the line. I doubt elam went rogue and did it solely.

The 51 yard pass was a great catch and it's hard to defend a nicely placed ball and catch. Not an excuse because he still could have tried to bat it away or play on the ball he just didn't have leverage on it.

He didn't have a good game but he also didn't have a terrible game. His speed made up for his depth the defense played.

I'm not sure he didn't have leverage.  It seems like he could have driven on the ball once he determined where it was heading.  But he just watched the receiver make the catch without any attempt to disrupt it.  Weird rep.

Weird rep indeed. It looks like he got beat inside, but he didn't have to. He just kep watching the WR and had no idea WTF was going on with the football.

Speaking of, has anybody noticed that defenders seem to never turn around and look for the ball anymore? It seems like most replays I just see a WR running with their head upfield towards the WR with their hands in the air. Looking for the ball used to be the prerequisite for DPI. But now it seems like as long as you don't grab or truck the receiver you can do whatever.

I would be fine with a little more grabby/physical play if DB's were tracking the football.

Well, at least he has a lot of new pages in his personal notebook of plays he got beat on.

I think Elam lacks awareness. He always seems to be at or near where he should be, but just doesn't know how to make a play on the ball. I just don't think he's a natural football player.

This was always Elam’s issue IMO.

He can be in position and still allow the catch. Outside leverage. WR runs post.

How can someone blame a player for being 10 yards off in coverage when they don't know the defensive call and where he was supposed to be lining up?

I’m not saying Elam is an elite corner, but it’s a position you can easily pick plays to make someone bad. There’s only a few elite corners who consistently look good. This game is geared toward giving the offense every advantage in the world. Guys are going to give up big plays on a regular basis.

I mean I am not going to give a team a lot of crap for giving up 152 passing yards.  The coverage was good enough to relegate Hurts to a runner.   I think anyone here who didnt let their hate of Beane and McDermott cloud their opinions knew the guy wasnt good enough.

He seemed fine. But it isn't like Hurts is some passing monster of a QB. Bigger tests are ahead of him.

Usually means they're in some kind of cover 3 or 4 scenario where they cover over the top and underneath is nickel and LBs.

I watched Elam closely. Other than than him getting beat on that one deep pass, he played great! He actually shut his side of the field down and made some good tackles too. I was surprised. He isn't awesome - but he sure has improved. I thought he looked good.

he looked to me like he always did.  really athletic and capable of playing well when driving forward, just entirely lost when he has to turn around or use any technique.

he never got better after we drafted him, that's not a good sign.

On one of the TDs he got wiped out in a block by DeVonta Smith, possibly the lightest WR in the league. That was embarrassing.

The entire defense couldn't tackle or shed for long stretches of that game.  I also feel like the eagles got away with a number of holds on Hurts scrambles.

They did get a few TFLs in there that definitely made things more challenging for philly and got some punts.  The turnover in the red zone and Lamb's several drops were the difference more than the defense.  Just giving a physical team that amount of momentum is a killer.

because they don't understand the game. Lots of hot air out there... If a db is 10 yards off the LOS, that is where the coach expects him to be.

That said, Elam was not great, but looked more competent out there than he did in our scheme and was decent.

anymore ?

maddening !

remember Leodis McKelvin...first rounder and very first DB/CB taken in 2008 draft which has to our worst draft...evah...besides fumbling a kick-off return he should have downed in the endzone inside 2 mins with the Bills winning and then loosing to Brady/Pats because of that...

see also JD Williams, he off the need for the flame-######ant jersey...cant believe he is CB coach for Fresno State..must be a "do as I say not as I did" coach

both would run with and chase WRs all game with no sense of what else was going on...

how do you coach "turn your head and not the body once or twice for a split second"  based on the timing of film study as when to expect the ball to be thrown or in the air ???
