Great news.  He’s one of the league’s best and deserves what he’s asking for.  But the jets have no money left, especially for 2024 I hear.

Yeah, I'm hoping he gets a HUGE contract.  The more money Williams and Rodgers get, the less the Jets have for skilled free agents.

That’s because it is,

Are the players the ones who do it or does it come from their agent?

Seems like a cheap way to get a news story written and generate a bunch of buzz to put pressure on the team to get the deal done.

It really might be more sophisticated than that... I'm sure the pr/marketing/social media depts have metrics around engagement of social media posts (and I'm sure agents have that as well, as do media companies).

Imagine Russ Brandon still running the team and there not being a wall between football ops and organizational ops... there's gotta be a better reason that players do that than to just publicly apply pressure, but I'm also a data analyst who people sometimes say has a utopian view of the way business should be run and this to me is perfect for trying to collect data to show the value of a player off the field as well and get places like espn to pick up the story because they see the engagement data of their audience with that social media scrubbing.

It's really not.  Team's FO/owner/GM/capologist have a number they won't go above.  No manner of social foot stomping is going to change that number.

"public pressure" does not apply here...

Come on.  Agents know this doesn't move the needle--they are the ones in the room with the team when money is discussed.

If no deal is imminent and this guy holds out, fans aren't really going to be leaping out buildings over it.  More likely they will blame the player who holds out.

That is certainly an opinion. Especially for an organization where the owner has stepped in before to get deals done.

I'm sure you're right.  But I think it does the total opposite of what players intend.

It makes them look selfish, greedy and more about their paycheck than team-players.

Above all, fans care about the team winning.  They are worried about the 2023 schedule.  Not their defensive tackle's financial security.  To the general public, Quinnen Williams is still under contract for another season.  But he now gives the impression that he's moving on mentally and not dedicated to the Jets, because he wants his big contract RIGHT NOW.

Fans are OK with the Jets pitching low-ball offers early in the negotiation process, because a favorable contract is to the overall TEAM'S benefit.  Now if the Jets drag their feet and ultimately let Williams become a Free Agent next season (and as a result, hurting the team)...that's when the front office becomes the bad guy and fans start turning against them.

Oh, I agree completely. The players may think it makes them look better, but the fans dont care that much, or are actually against them.

owner writes the checks.  he would be "stepping in" on his own behalf--he's not an arbitrator.

No other team traded for a $50M AAV player and rolled 90% of their salary to the next year.  Rodgers counts for more than $100M next year.  Cap wise, the Jets are in the worst shape of any team for 2024.

Oh I know they’re in a bad spot.  I also know that teams can kick as much money as they want and long as they kick it down the road.  How much and how far do they want to kick it is the question.  But they can sign him.  Make no mistake about it

I just don’t see them getting rid of the such and impact defensive lineman.

So was Dareus. Until he got paid.

Thats not what I remember. He brought it big time when he was in the mood but couldn't be relied on to be that disruptive force every game. His issue was not one of talent, of which he had plenty. He did deal with some personal issues but even despite that, he wasnt self motivated. I frequently contrasted him with Kyle WIlliams who maximized his output with dedication and effort whereas Dareus did the opposite.

Also to keep in mind the Jets have 30 UFAs next year (Bills 25) and a good chunk of them they will want to re sign.  The more I look at their situation, it’s pretty much an all in championship or bust roster for the next two years.  They are going to lose a lot of young talent and will be the 2022 Rams before long.

Henry McKenna on Twitter: "#Jets DT @QuinnenWilliams is seeking between $25M-$30M per year in his upcoming contract, per source. (More than Jeffery Simmons and less than Aaron Donald.) "He loves the Jets. He just wants to get paid. Hopefully it doesn't get messy," the source said. Story coming...." / Twitter

I don’t have to keep anything in mind.  Douglas does. All I said was that I believe that they plan on keeping Williams.

I agree they’re in a terrible cap position

going forward and are def all in the next 2 years. They’ll be paying rodgers cap hit over the next 5 years.

I don’t think they’re the rams-  they are set up much better for the future. They’ll be in cap hell throughout- but they can navigate it to be competing for the next 5 years as long as they replace AR properly.  They have superstars and core players (gardner- Wilson- Breece-  Clemons- Johnson)  that will be getting paid on their rookie contracts for the next 3+ years. All

of the rams superstars were getting paid big bucks and on their 2nd and 3rd contract.

That's honestly not unreasonable.   He would get that somewhere else.

Jets made the decision to commit 100M to Rodgers that they're pushing into coming years, not Quinnen Williams.

I am a guy who would have elected to let Bruce sit after he got a brand new contract, but wanted a new one because somebody else got a raise. I don’t tolerate that well, and you probably don’t want me as your GM. The list of reasons is of course long, VERY long, but that’s kinda high up there.

That’s a horrible spot to be in, paying elite money for elite players and no  QB, brutal
